The Coates family’s business interests and its commitment to the Potters are relevant to the club’s story, but the family’s current net worth is not established by the public records and reporting reviewed here. Stoke’s latest reported accounts show substantial revenue alongside a significant operating loss.
Who owns Stoke City now?
John Coates became Stoke City’s direct owner when Stoke City Holdings Limited was separated from bet365 in 2024. Companies House records Coates as holding at least 75% of the holding company’s shares and voting rights. BBC reporting said Stoke City Holdings held a 98.1% stake in the club.
The Companies House control record says Peter Coates and bet365 Group Limited ceased to be persons with significant control on 8 July 2024. The restructuring was reported in August 2024. It transferred the bet365 Stadium and training ground to the club group and left the club debt-free after £90.5 million of loans were waived. Those changes altered the corporate structure and balance sheet; they do not mean bet365 still owns Stoke City.
How bet365 fits into the Coates family’s business interests
The Coates family has a long association with Stoke. BBC’s history of the club says Peter Coates and his family first became majority shareholders in the 1980s. After an Icelandic consortium acquired the club, bet365 bought it back in 2006. Before the 2024 demerger, the club’s corporate ownership context was connected to bet365, which accounts for the business’s presence in Stoke’s ownership history.

Accounts for Stoke City Holdings described bet365 Group as controlled by Denise Coates CBE and her family before the separation. The resulting structure distinguishes the family’s business interest in bet365 from John Coates’s direct ownership of Stoke City. The companies and the club are not interchangeable, and the restructuring should not be described as bet365 continuing to own the Potters.
What is the Coates family’s net worth?
A current combined net-worth figure for the Coates family is not established by the available Companies House records, Stoke City accounts or club ownership reporting. Those sources document company control, filings and the football club’s finances; they do not provide a complete valuation of the family’s private assets.

Any published wealth estimate should be treated as an estimate, not as a disclosed or audited family balance sheet. To assess one responsibly, a reader would need to know who published it, when it was calculated, what assets and liabilities it covers, and how the publisher arrived at the figure. Without that information, a specific number would imply more certainty than the public evidence supports.
What Stoke’s latest reported accounts show
BBC reported that Stoke’s accounts for the year ended 31 May 2025 showed revenue of £35.4 million and an operating loss of £30.9 million. Revenue was £32.2 million in the preceding year. The club also reported spending £13 million on strengthening the playing squad during 2024–25. These are results for that accounting year, not forecasts of future revenue, losses or spending.

| Accounting period | Reported financial figures | What they describe |
|---|---|---|
| 2023–24 | £25.7 million loss; £6.1 million net investment in facilities | BBC’s report on Stoke’s 2023–24 accounts. The club said its trading loss and cash deficit illustrated the need for continuing director support and sustainable owner investment within EFL financial regulations. |
| 2024–25 | £35.4 million revenue; £30.9 million operating loss; £13 million spent strengthening the squad | BBC’s report on Stoke’s accounts for the year ended 31 May 2025. The accounts were filed at Companies House on 2 March 2026. |
The £90.5 million loan waiver belongs to the 2024 ownership restructuring, not to operating income or proof that the club was trading profitably. Debt relief and operating performance answer different questions: the waiver changed the club group’s debt position, while the operating loss reflects the reported result of running the club in 2024–25.

In August 2024, John Coates said, “My family and I remain steadfast in our commitment to Stoke City, so it’s very much business as usual.” He also said investment in stadium and training infrastructure would continue and that investment in the playing squad would be maximised within competition rules. These were commitments about intended support, not guarantees of sporting success.

In an official club interview ahead of the 2024–25 season, Coates said the club believed sensible squad investment could help it achieve its goal of having a successful football team. He also said Stoke intended to invest up to the maximum allowed under the financial rules of its division. For facilities, he described an aim to create the best environment for players and staff and the best match-day experience for supporters.
Which projects have been reported as delivered?
Later BBC reporting said Stoke completed a £13 million upgrade to its Clayton Wood training facility, improved the stadium and established an Elite Girls Academy. These are reported developments, distinct from the earlier statements of intention. Reported investment in facilities or the playing squad does not establish a particular league position or guarantee promotion.

For context, BBC’s report on the 2023–24 accounts described a £12 million Clayton Wood improvement project as then under way, alongside £6.1 million in net facility investment that year. That earlier project description and the later report of a completed £13 million upgrade refer to different reporting points; the figures should not be conflated.
