That is not a U.S. price quote or a full landed-cost estimate: the $9,650 figure is a reported retail-price equivalent, not an established customs value, and the available sources do not establish a U.S. Seagull launch or sticker price.
What the $19,300 estimate assumes
CnEVPost reported on August 1, 2024, that the 2025 BYD Seagull’s base trim cost RMB 69,800, equivalent to about $9,650 at the exchange rate it cited. Applying a 100% additional duty to an assumed customs value of $9,650 adds another $9,650:
$9,650 assumed customs value + $9,650 illustrative duty = $19,300
The calculation is useful as a tariff-only illustration, not as a prediction of what a buyer would pay. A China-market retail price is not necessarily the value customs would use, and the sources do not provide a verified customs valuation for the Seagull.

What the China-market prices include—and what they don’t tell you
The three 2025 Seagull trims reported by CnEVPost were priced in China as follows. These are figures reported in August 2024, not confirmed 2026 prices or U.S. MSRPs.

Why the tariff matters
In its 2024 Section 301 action, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative raised the additional duty on China-origin electric vehicles to 100%. That is the rate used in the illustrative calculation above; it does not mean a U.S. buyer would pay a simple 100% markup on a China-market sticker price.
A later policy announcement does not establish a Seagull tariff reduction. On September 27, 2026, the White House said the United States and China would consider product lists for possible reduced tariff treatment, subject to domestic laws and processes. The accompanying U.S. import list does not name passenger vehicles, so it does not show that the Seagull’s tariff treatment changed.

Costs between a China price and a U.S. showroom
A U.S. showroom price would depend on more than the vehicle’s China-market price and import duty. The available sources do not quantify these additional costs:
- Customs value: The $9,650 figure is a reported China-market retail equivalent, not a confirmed value for calculating U.S. duties.
- Shipping and insurance: No Seagull-specific freight or insurance cost is provided.
- U.S. compliance and safety changes: The Associated Press reported in May 2024 that changes to meet U.S. safety standards could add cost, but did not provide a Seagull-specific estimate.
- Distribution and dealer costs: No U.S. sales or distribution structure, or related cost, is established in the cited sources.
- Taxes and fees: Any state and local taxes or registration charges would depend on where the vehicle was sold and registered; no U.S. sales location or price is established.
Because these inputs are missing, $19,300 should not be read as a landed cost, dealer quote, or out-the-door amount.

Is the BYD Seagull being sold in the U.S.?
The sources available here do not establish a U.S. Seagull launch or an actual U.S. sticker price. The Associated Press reported in May 2024 that BYD vehicles were not then being sold in the United States. That dated report provides historical context, not confirmation of present-day availability.

The most defensible figure is a conditional calculation: about $19,300 if the reported $9,650 China-market equivalent were treated as customs value and a 100% additional duty were applied to it. The calculation does not establish whether the Seagull would be sold in the U.S. or what a final retail price would be. A meaningful U.S. price would require a confirmed launch, customs valuation, compliance costs, shipping and distribution details, and local taxes and fees.
