The earlier July 6 announcement covered around 4,800 roles across Microsoft, while Xbox separately set out a multistage plan for its division.
What happened in Microsoft’s July and September layoffs?
On July 6, Microsoft Chief People Officer Amy Coleman announced that the company was eliminating around 4,800 roles, about 2.1% of its global workforce. Coleman said the changes mostly affected Microsoft Commercial and Xbox. In a separate message that day, Xbox leader Asha Sharma announced a planned reduction of approximately 3,200 Xbox team members throughout FY2027, including approximately 1,600 immediate role eliminations.
On September 22, Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty announced 268 role eliminations across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and Xbox Game Studios management and central functions. Booty said the actions completed since July, including studio divestitures, brought Xbox roughly three-quarters of the way through the restructuring previously announced. Xbox described the September cuts as part of that existing plan—not a new Microsoft-wide round.
| Date | Scope | Figure | What it describes |
|---|---|---|---|
| July 6, 2026 | Microsoft-wide | Around 4,800 roles | Company announcement; about 2.1% of its global workforce, according to Coleman. |
| July 6, 2026 | Xbox | Approximately 3,200 reductions | Planned across FY2027; approximately 1,600 were described as immediate role eliminations. |
| September 22, 2026 | Xbox | 268 role eliminations | Further actions within the restructuring announced in July; Xbox said the plan was roughly three-quarters complete. |
The counts have different scopes and meanings. The 4,800 figure is Microsoft’s company-wide July announcement; the 3,200 is an Xbox plan spanning FY2027, not a completed total; and the 268 is a September Xbox update. The announcements do not establish that these numbers can be added together as a total of distinct people affected.

Why did Microsoft and Xbox say they were cutting roles?
Microsoft’s company-wide explanation
Coleman said Microsoft was adjusting resources and roles to align investment and work with changing customer needs and business priorities. She also said the roles eliminated in the July company-wide action were not being replaced by AI: “I also want to be direct that the roles eliminated today are not being replaced by AI.” That statement is specific to the roles announced on July 6; it does not explain every later Xbox decision or establish that AI played no role in broader workforce planning.
Coleman also said Microsoft had redeployed more than 4,000 employees over the preceding year, including 500 that month, and that more than 30% of eligible employees had chosen its recent voluntary retirement program. Those figures describe redeployments over the prior year and participation among eligible employees, respectively.

Xbox’s division-specific explanation
Sharma described Xbox’s business as unhealthy, saying, “Our business today is not healthy.” She cited Xbox’s own assessment of lower margins than comparable platform and publishing businesses, a smaller install base and higher cost structure at the start of the console generation, and a need to simplify operations and focus investment. These were management’s stated assessments and rationale, not independently audited findings.
The September update also described studio reorganizations and ongoing consultation on a proposed Ninja Theory closure. Consultation involving Arkane was said to remain underway and expected to continue through the end of 2026. Those developments are distinct from the 268 announced role eliminations.

Do Microsoft’s financial results explain the layoffs?
Microsoft reported FY2026 Q4 revenue of $90.0 billion, up 18% year over year, and operating income of $40.6 billion, also up 18%. The quarter ended June 30, 2026; the company said its results included severance expense and Xbox impairment charges. These company-wide results provide context but do not show that poor overall financial performance caused the job cuts, nor do they explain the decisions affecting particular teams.
Earlier, in Microsoft’s FY2026 Q3 earnings call, CFO Amy Hood said the company expected headcount to decrease year over year while continuing to invest in research and development, including AI. That is company-level context, not a detailed explanation for the July or September role decisions.

What is known about support for affected employees?
Coleman’s July 6 company-wide post referred generally to financial support and resources for affected employees. The September Xbox update did not specify locations, individual severance or benefit terms, or the decision process for each team. The July description should not be assumed to apply identically to people affected by the later Xbox action.
