A wrapped token is a representation of an asset for use on another blockchain; it is not automatically the original asset on that chain. When you bridge funds, the route may lock and represent your asset, burn one representation and mint another, or arrange an atomic swap. Before confirming, verify the networks, token contract addresses, bridge controls, fees, and route back to the original asset.
What happens to a token when you bridge it?
Blockchains keep separate records and follow separate rules. One chain does not natively know that an asset exists on another, so a bridge provides a route for transfers. Depending on its design, a bridge may also relay messages or other data, but an asset-transfer route does not necessarily support those functions. Ethereum.org’s overview of bridges describes several ways a transfer can work:
| Transfer pattern | What happens | What to understand |
|---|---|---|
| Lock and mint | The source-chain asset is locked; a corresponding representation is minted on the destination chain. | The destination token is a representation, not the original asset moving between ledgers. Its value depends on the route’s mechanism and assumptions. |
| Burn and mint | A source-chain representation is burned and a corresponding token is minted on the destination chain. | Check who can authorize minting and whether the route preserves the relationship between the tokens. |
| Atomic swap | Parties exchange assets across chains through a coordinated swap mechanism. | This is a different transfer pattern; do not assume it uses the same lock-and-mint arrangement as another bridge. |
So “I bridged my token” can describe different outcomes. Check what the specific route does rather than assuming the same asset has simply changed networks.
Wrapped ETH and wrapped Bitcoin are not the same case
WETH: wrapping ETH for Ethereum applications
ETH is native to Ethereum, while many applications use the ERC-20 token interface. The WETH contract accepts ETH and mints an equivalent amount of WETH; redeeming WETH through the contract burns it and returns ETH. You still need native ETH to pay Ethereum transaction gas. Ethereum.org’s WETH guide also notes that tokens using a “wrapped” label can be custom app tokens or versions issued on other blockchains, with different properties. The name alone does not establish that two tokens are interchangeable.

WBTC: Bitcoin represented on Ethereum
WBTC on Ethereum is an Ethereum asset that represents Bitcoin for use in Ethereum applications. It is not BTC native to the Bitcoin blockchain. Ethereum.org’s bridge introduction makes this distinction. For any wrapped token, confirm both its network and its contract address; a ticker or token name by itself is not enough to identify the asset you hold.
How to compare bridge routes
There is no universally safest or best route. Compare the actual design and trade-offs rather than relying on labels such as “trusted” or “trustless.” Ethereum.org identifies these questions as useful when assessing bridges:
Rank #2
- Proven security at scale: Over 9 years and millions of cards issued with no known remote hacks, while military‑grade EAL6+ security keeps your private keys locked inside the chip. Your cryptocurrencies stay strongly protected from online attackers.
- Tap once to manage your entire crypto wallet across 90 blockchains - no USB cables or Bluetooth, no batteries, no setup. Access 14,100+ coins & tokens, DeFi, NFTs, and staking instantly from your phone
- Smart backup: Use your second Tangem Wallet as your Backup keys with end‑to‑end encryption; no more papers, pictures. If one card is lost, the remaining can still restore full access, with an optional seed phrase available for advanced users.
- Engineered to last up to 25 years: Waterproof (IP69K), shockproof and tested for extreme temperatures from −25°C to 50°C. A durable cold wallet with long‑term protection and independently audited security.
- Trusted by 6 million users worldwide (4.9 App Store, 4.8 Google Play) - buy, sell, swap, stake, and spend cryptocurrency directly. The secure offline storage wallet designed for how people actually use crypto wallets
- Verification and control: Who verifies cross-chain messages and controls the release or minting of tokens? Does the route rely on external validators, a multisig, MPC, or an oracle system, or on the connected chains’ validators?
- Trust assumptions: Could an operator censor transfers or collude to take funds? What must users trust about the bridge and the connected networks?
- Speed and effort: How long does this route typically take, and how many transactions or wallet signatures does it require?
- Connectivity and function: Which chains, rollups, or sidechains are supported? Does the bridge move assets only, or can it also relay messages or other data?
- Cost and capital: What bridge fees and network gas costs apply, and what capital secures the route?
Ethereum.org describes trusted designs as potentially offering broad connectivity, speed, and cost-effectiveness while relying on external verifiers. Its trustless category relies on the connected chains’ validators and avoids adding those external trust assumptions. Neither label means that a particular route is risk-free. A sidechain also has its own consensus mechanism and does not inherit Ethereum’s security guarantees; see Ethereum.org’s sidechains overview.
What risks should you account for?
A bridge transfer depends on more than the token’s displayed price. Smart-contract flaws, compromised or malicious operators, failure of an underlying chain, and problems during congestion, attacks, or rollbacks can affect whether assets are released or remain usable. When multiple applications rely on the same wrapped representation, an exploit involving that token can expose more than one application to the same underlying problem. An audit is useful information, but it cannot prove that a contract will not fail. Ethereum.org’s security report on bridges and cross-chain interactions discusses the complexity of validation and message-passing risks.

There is also a specific minting caveat in EIP-7802: “This standard should not be used for wrapped native tokens like WETH, as it can lead to uncollateralized minting if the bridge does not control the underlying asset.” The proposal identifies symmetric burn and mint of the native token on both chains as the safe exception it describes. Treat this as EIP-7802’s warning about that standard, not a universal description of every bridge design.

- TAP-TO-SIGN MOBILE EXPERIENCE — Pair your wallet with the DCENT mobile app over Bluetooth. Manage tokens, review transactions, and access in-app swap features directly from your phone — no cables, no desktop required.
- WEB3 & dAPP ACCESS VIA METAMASK — Connect to MetaMask and other browser extension wallets to manage NFTs, claim airdrops, and access dApps. A large screen and intuitive 4-button interface keep every transaction clearly visible before you sign.
- SEAMLESS FIRMWARE UPDATES & 30-DAY MONEY-BACK GUARANTEE — Apply security updates without resetting your wallet or migrating funds. Backed by Amazon's 30-day money-back guarantee — your purchase is risk-free.
- Networks: Confirm the source and destination networks shown in your wallet and on the bridge.
- Token identity: Check the token and contract address on both networks against a reliable source for the route. Do not rely on a familiar ticker or matching name alone.
- Mechanism and control: Determine whether the route locks and mints, burns and mints, or uses another transfer method. Find out who can verify transfers and release or mint tokens.
- Receipt and costs: Review the amount expected after bridge fees and gas. Make sure your wallet has the destination chain’s native token if you will need to transact there.
- Return route: Check how you would redeem or bridge back, including any stated delays or eligibility rules.
- Route authenticity and support: Use the bridge’s official URL and confirm that it currently supports the exact networks and assets you plan to use.
How a basic bridge transfer works
Ethereum.org’s layer-2 walkthrough describes a general process requiring a crypto wallet and funds. Its page, updated June 6, 2026, says the cited layer-2 process should not take more than 10 minutes; that timing is specific to that guide and should not be treated as a promise for every bridge or cross-chain route. The practical sequence is:
- Choose the destination network and a bridge that supports the route.
- Connect your wallet and specify the amount.
- Review the expected receipt and fees before approving the transfer.
- Confirm the transaction in your wallet and wait for the route to complete.
For the exact steps and scope of that layer-2 walkthrough, see Ethereum.org’s guide to bridging tokens to layer 2.
