Riot Games has not published a standalone revenue or profit total for the League of Legends World Championship (Worlds) in the official materials cited here. Riot explains how League of Legends esports earns and shares money, but those figures cover the broader esports ecosystem, not Worlds alone. Any precise dollar answer for the tournament would be speculation.
How does Worlds make money?
Worlds is part of Riot’s broader League of Legends esports business. Riot identifies in-game digital sales, sponsorships and media among the sources of revenue for that ecosystem. It has also described event passes, sponsor activations and event-related merchandise as part of its monetization approach.
In-game digital items
Riot calls in-game esports digital sales a scalable revenue source. Examples include content associated with MSI and Worlds, emotes and Worlds winner skins. Riot’s 2024 announcement says this digital revenue is pooled for team allocations, but it does not report how much Worlds items sold or how much revenue the tournament generated. Sponsorship and media
Sponsorships and media are other direct revenue sources Riot identifies for LoL Esports. Sponsorship revenue does not necessarily rise in proportion to audience size: Riot’s John Needham noted that sponsor categories are limited. Riot also said Western broadcasts were non-exclusive and generated de minimis streaming-platform revenue because advertising revenue was weak. That helps explain why audience size alone cannot establish how much money a tournament earns. Riot’s 2023 explanation of esports sustainability

Event passes and merchandise
Riot described the 2023 Worlds Virtual Pass as combining digital products, exclusive physical merchandise and physical and digital sponsor goods. This shows that such products have been part of the event experience; Riot did not disclose their sales total or the amount it retained.
What do Riot’s revenue-sharing figures tell us?
Riot’s 2024 Global Revenue Pool is a League of Legends esports-wide allocation model for digital revenue, not a Worlds-only sales report.

| Allocation | Share | What it applies to |
|---|---|---|
| General shares | 50% | Digital revenue in the Global Revenue Pool, allocated to Tier 1 teams |
| Competitive shares | 35% | Digital revenue in the Global Revenue Pool, tied to competitive performance |
| Fandom shares | 15% | Digital revenue in the Global Revenue Pool, tied to fandom |
Riot also announced it would contribute 50% of other direct revenue, such as sponsorships and media, after recovering its annual investment in LoL Esports. That is an ecosystem-level policy; it does not disclose Worlds’ revenue, event costs or profit.
The model has changed over time. Riot’s 2023 sustainability explanation said teams received 50% of certain league revenues under the earlier partnership model, and that Riot paid a percentage of digital sales for esports content and prize pools for participating international competitions. In 2024, Riot described a proposed shift toward fixed stipends and digital revenue sharing for teams in the LCK, LCS and LEC. These statements concern different arrangements and scopes; neither is a Worlds income statement.

Why the prize pool and viewer numbers are not revenue
- Prize pool: Money awarded to competitors is a payout, not the tournament’s gross revenue or profit.
- Peak concurrent viewers: Riot reported nearly 74 million peak concurrent viewers for the 2021 Worlds final in a 2023 article. Riot defines this as the number of people watching at one time globally.
- Average-minute audience: Riot reported nearly 31 million for that same final. This is the average number watching each minute, not cumulative unique reach or a dollar figure.
Neither audience measure can be converted into revenue without a disclosed method linking viewers to sales or other income. Riot’s published figures do not provide such a conversion.

No. Riot reported that VALORANT Champions skin-pack sales in 2022 generated $42 million, with half distributed to competing teams. That figure is for a different game and event; it is not evidence of League of Legends Worlds sales. Riot’s 2023 esports sustainability article

What is known—and what is not
Riot’s public disclosures cited here describe revenue sources and sharing rules for LoL Esports, but do not give a Worlds-specific gross revenue total, merchandise sales total, sponsorship value, media income, operating cost or net profit. Those are distinct figures: gross sales are not the same as revenue retained by Riot, distributions to teams, prize payouts or profit after costs. Without an event-level financial statement, none can be calculated reliably from the available numbers.
