In the U.S. listings checked in October 2026, Chilean sea bass cost about $31.99 to $41.49 per pound. Treat those as seller-specific examples, not a national average: your local price depends on the market, availability, and how the fish is sold. Call the fish counter for a current quote.
What the checked listings charged
| Seller | Listed price | Price and availability details |
|---|---|---|
| #1 Fish Market, via Mercato | $31.99 per pound | Estimated item price; the final price depends on the fish’s actual weight. Listing accessed October 2026. Mercato listing |
| H-E-B | $36.97 per pound | H-E-B cautions that prices can vary between in-store, curbside, and delivery. Listing accessed October 2026. H-E-B listing |
| The Fresh Market | $41.49 per pound | Product page described an approximately half-pound item and showed an estimated item price; it was marked out of stock when indexed. Listing accessed October 2026. The Fresh Market listing |
The examples span roughly $32 to $42 per pound, but they are not a controlled comparison of identical cuts, origins, or product forms. They also do not establish what a typical U.S. market charges.
Why the price can differ at your fish counter
- Seller and location: The listings come from specific sellers, and local prices may differ.
- Fulfillment method: H-E-B notes that its price may vary between in-store, curbside, and delivery orders.
- Actual weight: A per-pound listing may show an estimate, with the final charge based on the weight you receive.
- Stock and product details: The examples do not provide a like-for-like comparison of fresh, refreshed, previously frozen, or frozen fish, or of cut and origin.
For an accurate grocery budget, ask the fishmonger for today’s per-pound price, whether the displayed amount is estimated or final, and the approximate total weight of the portion you plan to buy.
What “Chilean sea bass” means

Check the catch origin before buying
Monterey Bay Aquarium’s U.S. National Seafood Guide lists Chilean seabass from Chile in its Avoid category. Seafood Watch describes its red Avoid rating as appropriate for seafood that poses high environmental risk, and advises: “Take a pass on this red-rated seafood for now because it poses a high risk to the environment.” The Chile-specific listing should not be generalized to every fishery or product sold under the market name. Ask the fishmonger where the fish was caught and check the current recommendation for that fishery.
