What the nearly 3 million litres figure means
PerthNow reported on 17 March 2025 that Lion Australia data put Western Australian Guinness consumption at nearly 3 million litres per year. The report did not publish Lion’s underlying dataset or explain how the estimate was calculated, so the figure is best treated as a reported estimate rather than an independently verified total. PerthNow’s report appeared on St Patrick’s Day in 2025; it does not establish consumption for 2026.
Why the St Patrick’s Day pub figure is different
The same PerthNow report said Lion distributed nearly 1 million litres—equivalent to 1.6 million pints—to 2,000 pubs across Australia for St Patrick’s Day. This is national event supply to pubs, not the quantity consumed in Western Australia over a year. Distribution and consumption are different measures, and the reported figures should not be combined.
What the report says about drinkers
PerthNow also attributed two year-on-year increases to Lion: Guinness consumption among drinkers aged 19–25 reportedly rose 47%, while consumption among women reportedly rose 70%. The article did not provide definitions, methodology or underlying data for either comparison. Drinks Digest repeated the demographic figures on 18 March 2025, alongside the state and city estimates, but its account also attributed them to Lion rather than presenting an independent measurement: Drinks Digest’s report.

How the Western Australian figure compares with other reported estimates
Drinks Digest reported Lion figures for the preceding 12 months that included Greater Perth and other states. These are related geographic estimates, not necessarily separate quantities that can be added together: Greater Perth is within Western Australia, and the source does not explain whether the measures overlap or use identical methods.

What “Splitting the G” means
The PerthNow story also described “Splitting the G,” a Guinness-pint challenge in which the drinker aims to leave the foam line halfway through the letter G on a branded Guinness glass. It said an app can indicate whether the pour reaches the target for people using a non-branded glass. The trend is a social detail from the same St Patrick’s Day coverage, not evidence for the consumption estimate.

The clearest takeaway is that Lion’s reported estimate put annual Guinness consumption in Western Australia at nearly 3 million litres in the figures covered by PerthNow in March 2025. The accompanying national pub-distribution number refers to a separate St Patrick’s Day supply event. Neither report supplies enough methodology to independently validate the estimate or establish a newer annual total.
