For a current charter benchmark, Flyius’s European catalogue snapshot dated July 10, 2026 lists indicative average hourly rates from €3,036 for very light jets to €14,350 for ultra-long-range jets. A specific trip can cost materially more or less after positioning, airport fees, crew expenses, taxes and other charges. Aircraft purchase prices are not represented by a single reliable current average; an older NBAA case study uses an $11 million midsize aircraft only as a modeling assumption.
Three different questions hide behind “private-jet cost”
Before comparing numbers, identify the cost category:
- Purchase price: the capital needed to buy a new or used aircraft.
- Whole-aircraft ownership: purchase or financing plus fixed and variable operating costs, depreciation, maintenance and eventual sale or exit costs.
- Fractional ownership: a share of an aircraft or fleet, usually with management and occupied-hour charges.
- Charter: paying for a particular flight without owning the aircraft.
These are not interchangeable hourly rates. The right comparison depends on your routes, passenger loads, schedule flexibility and expected annual flight hours.
2026 charter prices by aircraft class
Flyius’s Private Jet Cost Index 2026 snapshot, dated July 10, 2026, reports catalogue averages across 163 aircraft models in its European dataset. The figures below are indicative benchmarks, not guaranteed offers or universal tariffs.

| Aircraft class | Indicative average hourly rate (EUR) | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Very light jet | €3,036 per hour | Short trips, usually a small passenger group |
| Light jet | €4,042 per hour | Short- to medium-range business travel |
| Midsize jet | €5,282 per hour | More cabin space and longer range |
| Super-midsize jet | €8,045 per hour | Transcontinental missions with larger cabins |
| Heavy jet | €9,873 per hour | Long-range travel and larger groups |
| Ultra-long-range jet | €14,350 per hour | Intercontinental flights with maximum range |
Flyius also reports average catalogue route prices of €16,870 for a light-jet flight, €25,076 for a midsize-jet flight, €37,866 for a heavy-jet flight and €57,667 for an ultra-long-range flight. Those figures cover published routes in the same European dataset (804 routes), so they should not be treated as a fixed price list for every airport or date.
Why an hourly rate is not your final charter bill
Operators may quote a wet hourly rate that includes the aircraft, crew, fuel and standard insurance. The invoice can still include separate items, and the definitions differ by operator. A US-market guide from AoneJet, updated August 16, 2026, gives these indicative ranges:
| Cost component | Indicative range | What changes it |
|---|---|---|
| Aircraft wet rate | $1,600–$20,000 per flight hour | Aircraft class, route, operator and availability |
| Positioning or ferry time | 0–100% of live-leg time | Where the aircraft is based before and after your trip |
| Crew overnight | $250–$600 per crew member per night | Number of crew and nights away |
| Landing and ramp fees | $75–$1,200 per landing | Airport and aircraft size |
| FBO handling | $150–$1,500 | Facility, airport and services used |
Other possible additions include de-icing, parking, catering, Wi-Fi, fuel surcharges, federal excise tax, domestic segment fees and international handling. A short flight can therefore have a high effective price if the aircraft must travel empty to reach you or wait overnight.
Positioning is often the largest swing factor
Ask whether the quote includes the aircraft’s repositioning legs. A jet based at your departure airport may require little or no ferry time; a jet that must arrive from another city can add substantial billable hours. The same route on the same day can produce different totals depending on aircraft location and availability.

Daily minimums and schedule details
Some operators apply minimum billable flight time per day. Confirm the minimum, scheduled block time, passenger count, baggage assumptions, aircraft tail or model, cancellation terms and whether the quoted aircraft is guaranteed or merely representative.
How to compare charter quotes accurately
- Specify one itinerary: airports, departure and return dates, local times, passenger count and baggage.
- Specify the aircraft class: compare light with light, midsize with midsize and so on; cabin size and range can vary within a class.
- Request an itemized total: require separate lines for flight time, positioning, crew overnight, handling, landing fees, catering, taxes and any daily minimum.
- Check inclusions: ask whether fuel, standard catering, Wi-Fi, de-icing and ground transportation are included or optional.
- Confirm operational assumptions: aircraft availability, airport curfews, international permits and the operator’s cancellation or change policy.
- Compare the same currency and tax basis: a euro catalogue benchmark and a US-dollar quote are not directly comparable without geography, date and tax context.
Flyius says a live price depends on route, dates, availability and repositioning. A quote that omits any of those assumptions is not a meaningful comparison.
What buying a private jet really costs
A purchase price is only the first line of a whole-aircraft budget. NBAA’s ownership guidance identifies capital outlay, financing or leasing, depreciation, maintenance and refurbishment, fuel, taxes, transition costs and exit costs. It also cautions that anticipated charter revenue must be modeled realistically rather than assumed to offset expenses.
Purchase-price evidence is limited
The often-cited $11 million figure comes from an older NBAA modeled case involving a five-year-old midsize aircraft. It is a scenario input, not a current market average, and it does not establish what a new aircraft, another class, or a particular used aircraft should cost. Actual transaction prices depend on model, age, condition, equipment, maintenance status, market timing and delivery terms.

Recurring ownership expenses
- Fixed costs: crew salaries and training, hangar, insurance, management, subscriptions and administrative overhead.
- Variable costs: fuel, maintenance reserves, engine programs, consumables and landing or handling charges.
- Major maintenance: inspections, engine work and refurbishments can create large irregular bills; NBAA notes that a major event can exceed $1 million depending on the aircraft and event.
- Capital costs: interest or lease payments, depreciation and the opportunity cost of money tied up in the aircraft.
- Lifecycle costs: acquisition taxes, import or transition work, upgrades, downtime and eventual resale or disposal.
Fuel is identified by NBAA as the largest variable ownership cost in its discussion, but the amount varies with aircraft, fuel price, utilization and mission profile. Build an aircraft-specific model rather than applying a generic hourly figure.
Fractional ownership: access without buying the whole aircraft
Fractional programs typically combine a share purchase with recurring management charges and an occupied-hour fee. They can reduce the capital commitment and operational burden of whole ownership, but availability rules, peak-day limits, interchange fees, expiration terms and exit provisions matter.
NBAA’s historical illustrative case assumes a one-eighth share, a $22,000 monthly management fee, a $2,800 occupied-hour fee and a $1,400 hourly fuel surcharge. These are scenario assumptions from that older case study, not present-day program offers. Ask each provider for current share pricing, monthly charges, occupied-hour rates, fuel treatment, guaranteed notice periods, blackout dates and resale rules.

| Option | Usually fits | Main financial exposure |
|---|---|---|
| On-demand charter | Irregular travel, changing routes or lower annual usage | Variable trip prices, positioning and availability |
| Fractional ownership | Predictable usage with a desire for guaranteed access | Share capital, recurring fees, occupied-hour charges and contract limits |
| Whole ownership | High utilization, fixed fleet requirements or special aircraft needs | Capital, depreciation, maintenance events, staffing and resale risk |
NBAA recommends matching the solution to your financial, cultural and service needs and to annualized hours. There is no universal break-even point: a company-specific model must include route patterns, empty-leg exposure, peak-date demand, financing and the value of schedule control.

A practical worksheet for your own estimate
For a charter, calculate:
Total trip price = billable flight hours (including any positioning) × quoted hourly rate + fixed trip fees + taxes.
For ownership, model at least five years and include:
- acquisition price, financing terms or lease payments;
- annual fixed operating costs;
- fuel and maintenance by expected flight hours;
- major inspection and engine-event reserves;
- depreciation, resale value and exit costs; and
- realistic downtime and any charter revenue, net of management and marketing costs.
Run low-, base- and high-utilization cases. A low-use owner bears fixed costs over fewer hours, while a high-use operation faces more fuel, maintenance and cycle-related expenses.
Questions to ask before signing
- What exact aircraft model, cabin configuration and passenger limit are included?
- Is the aircraft guaranteed, or can the provider substitute another model?
- How many billable hours are positioning, and are daily minimums applied?
- Which taxes, airport charges, handling, catering, Wi-Fi, de-icing and parking costs are included?
- What happens if weather, maintenance or an airport closure disrupts the itinerary?
- For a fractional share, how do peak days, notice periods, interchange, hourly fuel charges and expiration work?
- For ownership, who bears maintenance reserves, downtime, upgrades, financing risk and resale risk?
NBAA summarizes the decision plainly: “In the end, every solution is unique. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of variables to consider.”
