The latest U.S. figures suggest parents and other family members together cover about half of wedding costs: roughly $17,680 when The Knot Worldwide’s reported 52% share is applied to its $34,000 average cost for weddings in 2025. That is a calculated combined-family estimate—not a directly reported average for parents alone, for either set of parents, or for one parent.
What the latest figures do—and don’t—say
The Knot Worldwide’s 2026 Real Weddings Study reports that the average U.S. wedding in 2025 cost $34,000. It says parents and family covered 52% of the total, while couples covered 48%. Multiplying $34,000 by 52% produces an estimate of about $17,680 from the combined “parents/family” category. The Knot’s study and its 2026 announcement do not establish how that amount is divided among parents, other relatives, or the two families.
So, if you are asking how much parents typically give, the most defensible answer is “about half of the wedding budget from parents and family combined,” not a precise parent-only dollar average. The $17,680 figure is arithmetic based on the reported average wedding cost and payer share, rather than a separately reported mean contribution.
Why other wedding-funding surveys show different figures
Surveys may ask whether someone contributes, who contributes, or what share of costs a payer covers. Those measures answer different questions and should not be read as competing dollar averages.

|---|---|---|
| The Knot Worldwide, 2026 study; U.S. couples married in 2025 | $34,000 average wedding cost; parents/family covered 52% and couples 48%. | The 52% applied to $34,000 yields a calculated estimate of about $17,680 for parents and family combined, not parents alone. The Knot study |
| Zola, 2025 First Look survey; couples planning 2025 weddings | 58% said they and their partner contributed without paying the full cost; 29% said they paid the full cost; 12% said loved ones covered it. Respondents also named their own family (94%) and partner’s family (69%) as contributors in a separate funding question. | These are responses about funding arrangements and contributors, not the percentage or dollar amount parents paid. The family percentages are not shares of costs and should not be added. Zola’s 2025 data |
| Zola, 2024 First Look survey; close to 7,000 couples marrying in 2024 | 38.68% named their own parents or guardians as contributors. | This measures how often respondents identified that contributor, not how much those parents gave. Zola’s 2024 data |
| AARP, June 18, 2025; citing The Knot’s study of couples married in 2024 | Parents typically covered about half of expenses; the reported average wedding cost was $33,000. | This is consistent with a substantial family contribution, but it does not provide a parent-only average or explain the split between families. AARP’s article |
The Knot’s 2026 study describes a survey of adult U.S. couples married in 2025, fielded from January through December 2025; the company says the release draws on more than 10,000 couples. Zola’s surveys cover different cohorts and ask different questions. These are U.S.-focused survey results, not universal norms for every country, community, or family.
How to decide what your family can contribute
Use the national estimate as context, not as a target or obligation. Wedding budgets vary, and “parents/family” can include relatives beyond parents. A contribution should fit the giver’s finances, rather than be set by what another family reportedly paid.

- Set a private, affordable limit first. Decide what you can give without borrowing or compromising essential expenses and long-term financial security.
- Tell the couple a clear amount and timing. A fixed contribution is easier to plan around than an open-ended promise. AARP recommends discussing and stating the contribution early.
- Clarify the terms. Agree whether the money is a gift or is intended for particular costs, and when it will be available.
- Discuss expectations alongside the money. If the contribution affects guest invitations or planning choices, say so explicitly and reach an agreement before the couple relies on the funds.
AARP quotes financial planner Chelse Stevens warning that dipping into retirement savings for a child’s wedding “could lead to a hardship later in life.” The reported national share is not a reason to take on debt or put retirement security at risk. AARP’s guidance
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. There is no universal rule about which family pays
Traditional lists sometimes assign specific expenses to one side of the family, but they are examples of custom, not a binding rule or a reliable way to divide a modern budget. The Knot’s guidance is that there is no single right way to decide financial responsibility; families should discuss what works for them. The Knot’s expense-allocation guide
