Re:

Average Cost of EV Tires and How Long They Really Last

There is no universal EV tire price or lifespan. A Consumer Reports test put selected 18-inch tires at $199–$289 each before installation, while tire life depends on fit, driving, maintenance, and conditions.

There is no reliable single average price or replacement mileage for every electric vehicle. As a useful U.S. price example, Consumer Reports paid $199 to $289 per tire for selected 18-inch replacement models in September 2026—$796 to $1,156 for four before installation, taxes, disposal, alignment, or other shop charges. Tire life varies just as widely: AAA cites some EV tires lasting only 10,000 to 20,000 miles, while Consumer Reports’ general all-season tire testing projected about 55,000 to 95,000 miles for high-scoring tires. Those figures describe different evidence, not a promise about how long a particular EV’s tires will last.

What is the average cost of tires for electric vehicles?

A marketwide average is not established by the available price data. For a concrete U.S. benchmark, Consumer Reports paid $199 for a standard General Altimax RT45 all-season tire and $289 for an EV-tuned Pirelli PZero All Season Plus Elect, both in selected 18-inch test sizes in September 2026. At those per-tire prices, a set of four would cost $796 to $1,156 before installation and other charges. These are examples from a limited test, not quotes for every EV or tire size. Consumer Reports’ EV tire comparison also found that more than half of surveyed EV owners who had replaced tires did so at or before 30,000 miles; that is an owner survey result, not a controlled estimate of tire life.

Your actual replacement bill depends on the vehicle’s approved fitment, the tire model and size, and local shop pricing. The test prices do not include mounting, balancing, TPMS or valve service, disposal, taxes, or alignment work. When requesting quotes, compare the total installed price for the exact same tire model and specification, and ask which services and warranties are included.

How long do EV tires last?

There is no dependable fixed mileage for all electric-car tires. AAA uses 10,000 to 20,000 miles as an example of how short EV tire life can be; it is not an average across EVs. AAA’s EV tire guidance discusses the extra demands EVs can place on tires.

For context, Consumer Reports’ 2025 controlled treadwear testing projected about 55,000 to 95,000 miles for high-scoring all-season tires overall—not specifically EV tires or a typical EV owner’s result. Consumer Reports’ tire testing overview describes its broader tire evaluations. The figures cannot be combined into a single expected lifespan because they come from different contexts and methods. The vehicle, tire construction, driving habits, maintenance, and road conditions all affect wear.

Why can EV tires wear out quickly?

Electric vehicles can place additional demands on tires because of their battery weight and strong, immediate torque. AAA says EVs are often fitted with low-rolling-resistance tires to support efficiency, and that replacement tires must be able to carry the vehicle’s load. Hankook likewise highlights load, driving style, and tire design among the factors affecting EV tire wear. Hankook’s EV tire buying guide says, “There is no single replacement interval for EV tires.”

Sailun ERange EV Touring 215/50R17 95V XL Electric Vehicle Tire
  • Designed for use on electric or hybrid passenger cars
  • Backed by a 45,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life
  • Manufactured with liquid phase mixing and EcoPoint3 technology for a long-lasting tread life that also provides enhanced grip and traction on wet or dry road
  • Reinforced sidewall increases load-carrying capacity to compensate for battery weight while also offering improved handling and cornering
  • SilentTread technology and a variable pitch sequence provide a quieter, more comfortable ride

That does not mean every EV needs a special tire or that EV tires always wear faster. Suitability depends on the vehicle’s approved size, load capacity, speed rating, and other manufacturer requirements. A tire that is cheaper up front may also affect efficiency, grip, noise, or tread life; choose by fit and overall performance rather than the EV label alone.

Do electric cars need special tires?

Not necessarily. Some EVs come with tires designed to balance load capacity, rolling resistance, noise, and range, but the essential requirement is a tire approved for the vehicle and its use. NHTSA says to use the original tire size or another size approved by the vehicle maker. It also notes that low-rolling-resistance replacements can improve range for electric and hybrid vehicles. NHTSA’s TireWise guidance covers tire selection and care.

Sold as a single tire.

Before buying, check the driver-door tire placard and owner’s manual. Confirm the approved size, load index, speed rating, and any XL or HL requirement. Then compare rolling resistance, wet-road grip, winter performance, noise, treadwear, warranty terms, and purchase price. Consumer Reports’ 2026 comparison found that some conventional all-season tires in its testing offered longer tread life and lower cost than original-equipment EV tires, but that does not make them a suitable replacement for every vehicle.

How to compare replacement tire costs

  1. Verify fitment first. Use the door placard and owner’s manual to identify approved sizes and ratings; do not choose by wheel diameter alone.
  2. Get comparable installed quotes. Ask shops to price the same tire model and size, and specify whether mounting, balancing, TPMS or valve service, disposal, taxes, alignment inspection, and warranty coverage are included.
  3. Compare ownership trade-offs. Weigh purchase price against independently tested tread life, mileage-warranty terms, range impact, wet and winter grip, road noise, and ride comfort. A low price alone may not be good value if the tire wears quickly or fails to meet the vehicle’s requirements.

For a question such as “How much does it cost to replace Tesla tires?”, the make alone is not enough to produce a dependable figure. A quote needs the specific Tesla model and year, wheel size, tire specification, and location.

How to help tires last longer

  • Maintain the correct cold pressure. Follow the vehicle maker’s pressure on the tire placard, not the maximum printed on the tire sidewall. NHTSA says proper inflation can extend average tire life by 4,700 miles; that is general tire guidance, not an EV-specific guarantee.
  • Rotate only as recommended. Follow the owner’s manual for rotation interval and pattern. NHTSA’s general guidance is to rotate every 5,000 to 8,000 miles when the vehicle manufacturer recommends it; some vehicles, including certain staggered-size setups, may not use a standard rotation pattern.
  • Check condition and tread. Inspect tires regularly for uneven wear or damage, and replace them when they are unsafe. Rotation and correct pressure can help manage wear but cannot guarantee a particular lifespan.
  • Drive smoothly. AAA recommends restraint in acceleration and driving behavior as part of reducing tire wear.
  • Consider tire age as well as tread. NHTSA says some tire and vehicle makers recommend replacement at six to ten years regardless of treadwear. Check the directions for the specific tire and vehicle.
