Military transport aircraft do not have one standard price. In U.S. FY2025 documents, C-130J-family figures range from a $76.732 million flyaway unit-cost estimate to congressional funding that works out to $130.5 million per aircraft. These figures measure different things, so neither should be treated as a universal aircraft price.
What do official U.S. figures show?
The available FY2025 figures provide examples for the C-130J family, not a price list for all military transports. Each figure has a different context:
| Figure | What it represents | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| $76.732 million | Flyaway unit cost for a C-130J-family aircraft | U.S. Air Force FY2025 budget justification; the displayed summary also gives a $106.250 million FY2023 figure. U.S. Air Force FY2025 budget justification |
| $1,775.3 million for 16 C-130Js | Procurement budget line, not a stated aircraft unit price | U.S. Department of Defense Comptroller, FY2025 weapons-system budget. DoD FY2025 weapons-system budget |
| $468.6 million for five KC-130Js; separately, $241.3 million for two KC-130Js | Distinct entries in the procurement table; the amounts should not be combined or divided into a purported unit price without interpreting the table’s columns and scope | U.S. Department of Defense Comptroller, FY2025 weapons-system budget. DoD FY2025 weapons-system budget |
| $261 million for two C-130Js; $261 million for two KC-130Js | Appropriated funding. Dividing the C-130J amount by two gives $130.5 million in funding per aircraft, not a flyaway price | U.S. House Committee on Appropriations, 2024 report for FY2025; the KC-130J funding is listed for the Navy Reserve. House Appropriations FY2025 report |
The DoD describes the C-130J mission as providing “responsive air movement and delivery of combat troops/supplies directly into objective areas through air landing, extraction, airdrop, and the air logistics support of theater forces.” DoD FY2025 weapons-system budget
Why can two prices for the same aircraft differ?
A flyaway unit cost and an appropriation are not interchangeable measures. A flyaway figure refers to the aircraft in a defined cost context. A procurement line or appropriation records funding for a program or purchase and may cover a different scope. Dividing a funding total by aircraft quantity produces an average funding-per-aircraft calculation; it does not establish what the manufacturer charges for one aircraft.

Other figures may describe full program acquisition cost or life-cycle ownership cost. Those measures can include costs beyond the aircraft itself. A fair comparison requires matching the measure and the items included, not simply comparing dollar amounts.
What determines the cost of a military transport plane?
- Model and mission: A tactical airlifter, strategic transport, or tanker-transport derivative such as the KC-130J is not automatically comparable to another type.
- Cost definition: Identify whether a figure is flyaway cost, a procurement line, total acquisition cost, or life-cycle cost.
- Included items: Modifications, engines and equipment, spares, support, training, infrastructure, and development can affect what a quoted or budgeted amount covers.
- Quantity and timing: Order size, fiscal or contract year, and delivery schedule matter. A figure from one year should not be presented as a current recurring price without evidence.
- Buyer and location: Geography, currency, exchange rates, local-content obligations, taxes, and export-package scope can change the comparison.
How to compare a quoted price or budget figure
- Name the aircraft and mission. Distinguish the exact model and variant, including whether it is a transport or tanker-transport derivative.
- State the year and buyer. Include the fiscal or contract year and purchaser, plus currency and geography.
- Describe the cost measure. Say whether the amount is flyaway cost, program funding, acquisition cost, or life-cycle cost.
- Explain the scope and quantity. Note what equipment and support are included and how many aircraft the figure covers.
- Label any division as a calculation. If you divide a budget amount by aircraft quantity, call the result funding per aircraft—not the aircraft’s unit price.
How much does a C-130 cost?
For a bounded U.S. FY2025 example, the Air Force budget justification gives a $76.732 million C-130J-family flyaway unit-cost figure. Separately, the House Appropriations report lists $261 million for two C-130Js, which averages $130.5 million in appropriated funding per aircraft. Because the measures differ, those figures do not form a like-for-like price range.

How much does a C-17 cost?
The official figures cited here do not establish a comparable C-17 price. The C-130J examples cannot be used to infer the price of a different aircraft or a universal range for strategic transports.

No. The cited U.S. documents provide useful C-130J-family examples, but they do not establish a harmonized current price list for strategic transports or non-U.S. programs. Buyer, year, aircraft configuration, procurement scope, and currency must be established before comparing another country’s purchase with these figures.
