There is no standard amount. A college football player may receive scholarship aid, a direct payment from the school, money from third-party name, image and likeness (NIL) deals, or some combination. The amount depends on the school and the player’s individual arrangements; the published school cap is not a salary for each player, and current public totals do not establish a typical football player’s earnings.
What do the published numbers actually show?
The available figures describe school-wide limits, payments across many sports, or NIL deals cleared over a set period—not a representative football player’s pay. Treating any of them as an individual salary would give a misleading answer.
| Figure | What it covers | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| $20.5 million | The 2025–26 academic-year maximum for new institutional payments and benefits at each participating Division I school, according to the NCAA and defendant-conference implementation Q&A. | It is not a football-only pool or a per-player amount. |
| Nearly $1.8 billion | Direct school revenue-share payments recorded for nearly 35,000 student-athletes across 307 schools, 33 conferences and 45 sports in 2025–26, as reported by On3 from College Athlete Payment System records. | The report does not give a football-only average or median. It also says total recorded distributions approached $1.9 billion when Alston awards and new incremental scholarships were included. |
| More than $227 million | NIL deals cleared in July and August 2026, according to the Associated Press report on College Sports Commission data. The AP said $188.6 million involved associated entities. | This is third-party deal value over two months, not school revenue sharing or an amount paid to each athlete. |
| 105 | The football roster limit for participating Division I programs under the NCAA implementation Q&A, subject to exemptions for qualifying designated student-athletes. | A roster limit does not determine compensation or require equal payments. |
No authoritative public figure in these sources establishes a representative 2026 individual football player’s average, median or guaranteed total earnings. An estimate or valuation associated with a particular player should not be mistaken for money actually paid or a standard rate.
What kinds of compensation can a player receive?
Direct payments and benefits from a school
The House v. NCAA settlement was approved by a U.S. District Court on June 6, 2025, and its framework took effect in the 2025–26 academic year. It allows Division I schools to provide permitted new payments and benefits to student-athletes. A school can choose whether to participate and how much to provide; it is not required to use the full amount allowed. Schools that provide benefits beyond prior limits are subject to the settlement framework’s obligations, including its cap, reporting and roster requirements. Third-party NIL deals
NIL compensation is payment for using an athlete’s name, image or likeness—for example, in an endorsement or promotional service. It is separate from school-funded revenue sharing: genuine third-party NIL payments are outside the institutional cap, while remaining subject to applicable rules, deal review and reporting. The NCAA’s implementation Q&A says Division I athletes must report third-party NIL deals valued at $600 or more through NIL Go. For deals involving associated entities, the Q&A describes review for a valid business purpose and fair-market value; the third party must fund the payment, rather than the school. The NCAA NIL guidance explains the applicable rule framework.
Scholarships and education benefits
Athletic scholarship aid is part of what a player may receive, but it is not the same as cash pay. Under the settlement, Division I replaced sport-by-sport scholarship limits with roster limits; schools may provide full or partial athletics aid subject to applicable rules. The value of a player’s aid therefore should not be added to a cash-payment figure without clearly identifying what the total includes. The NCAA Q&A describes the scholarship and roster framework.

How does the school cap work?
For 2025–26, the cap was $20.5 million per participating Division I institution for new payments and benefits across its athletes. The cap is not reserved for football, is not divided equally among teams or players, and does not require a school to spend the maximum. The permitted amount is based on specified revenues of defendant-conference schools and Notre Dame, including categories such as ticket sales, media rights, NCAA and conference distributions, bowl revenue, sponsorships, licensing and advertising, according to the NCAA implementation Q&A.
The same Q&A says the cap is recalculated every three years and rises by 4% from the prior year in the second and third years of each three-year period. The $20.5 million figure above is specifically for 2025–26; it should not be presented as the applicable cap for a later academic year.

Does the football roster limit set a player’s pay?
No. The 105-person limit applies to participating Division I football programs, with qualifying designated student-athletes exempt from counting toward it, as described in the NCAA implementation Q&A. It governs roster size, not the size or distribution of payments. A roster figure cannot be used to calculate a player’s expected earnings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you compare when evaluating a reported figure?
- Source: Determine whether the money is scholarship aid, school-funded revenue sharing or third-party NIL.
- Scope: Check whether the figure concerns one player, one school, football alone or athletes across multiple sports.
- Time period: Note the academic year or dates covered, particularly for a school cap or NIL total.
- Actual payment versus estimate: A reported valuation, offer or deal total does not by itself establish how much an athlete received.
- What is included: Separate cash from tuition, other benefits and awards before comparing totals.
For a specific NIL or eligibility question, rules can change; consult current NCAA and College Sports Commission guidance. The NCAA’s consent-judgment summary says prospective and transferring Division I athletes may discuss, negotiate and enter certain commercial NIL agreements with third parties before enrolling, while distinguishing commercial promotion from pay for athletic performance, achievement or work that will never be performed.
