Boeing flew the last 737 MAX held in storage at Moses Lake, Washington, to Seattle in August 2025, ending the rework effort at that site. It did not mean every 737 MAX had been delivered or that every certification question was settled: Boeing later reported separate inventory of the 737-7 and 737-10, while the FAA continued regulatory oversight.
What happened to the last 737 MAX stored at Moses Lake?
The final stored aircraft departed Moses Lake for Seattle in August 2025. A report by Lauren Rosenblatt for The Seattle Times, republished by The Spokesman-Review, described the flight as the completion of a six-year effort to work through aircraft parked there. The report said the aircraft was expected to be repainted for Air China, but its later delivery was not independently confirmed in the available reporting. The Spokesman-Review’s account of the report.
The milestone was specifically about the stored-aircraft rework at Moses Lake. Aircraft at Boeing’s other storage sites had already been worked through, according to the same report. It was not a claim that Boeing had cleared all MAX inventory or completed certification of every MAX variant.
Why were 737 MAX aircraft stored in Moses Lake?
The fleet accumulated after the MAX was grounded in 2019 following the Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines crashes. The FAA stopped allowing Boeing to issue airworthiness certificates for the aircraft. Boeing continued production for ten months after the grounding before halting it, adding completed planes that could not be delivered. The COVID-19 downturn in 2020 added to the backlog as airlines canceled deliveries. The Seattle Times report, republished by The Spokesman-Review; FAA regulatory history.

How large was the storage and rework operation?
Rosenblatt’s 2025 report attributed the figures to Boeing: the stored fleet reached 450 aircraft across Boeing facilities, including 250 at Moses Lake. The Moses Lake operation employed nearly 1,000 workers at its peak, according to that report’s account of an internal Boeing announcement. These are reported Boeing figures, not independently audited totals. The Spokesman-Review report.
Mechanics maintained engines and other systems on parked aircraft and reworked planes before they could return to delivery status. The work included software updates to the flight-control system. The report called the Moses Lake operation a “shadow factory,” reflecting the scale of the effort rather than a separate aircraft plant.

Does the departure mean all 737 MAX inventory and certification issues are over?
No. Boeing’s June 2026 filing discussed approximately 40 737-7 and 737-10 aircraft in inventory as of June 30, 2026, and said certification was still expected in 2026, subject to regulators and a solution for the engine anti-ice issue. These are separate variants and a later inventory matter—not the aircraft that left Moses Lake in August 2025. Boeing’s June 30, 2026 filing.
In July 2026, the FAA returned responsibility for issuing airworthiness certificates for the 737 MAX and 787 to Boeing after a review. The agency said it would continue inspections, audits, and monitoring. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said, “Safety drives everything we do, and this step forward is only possible because we are confident it can be done safely.” That decision concerns certificate issuance under continuing FAA oversight; it does not change what the 2025 Moses Lake departure represented.
