Nikola Zigic was reported to earn more than £50,000 a week at Birmingham City after the club’s 2011 relegation from the Premier League. That is a contemporary reported figure, not an exact or officially confirmed salary. The claim that it was “just under five times” Jay Stansfield’s pay is not established: published estimates for Stansfield range from £12,500 to £30,000 a week.
What was Nikola Zigic’s Birmingham City wage?
A Guardian report by the Press Association on 15 February 2013 said Zigic “still earns a reported £50,000-plus per week” after Birmingham’s relegation. The report did not give a more precise amount, and it should not be treated as a disclosed contract figure. The Guardian’s report is the source for the figure.
The wording matters: £50,000-plus is a reported lower bound, not proof that Zigic earned exactly £50,000 each week. The source does not specify an annual total or detail bonuses.
How does that compare with Jay Stansfield’s reported estimates?
There is no single established Stansfield wage figure in the cited sources. Two salary databases give materially different estimates, and neither is an official club or league disclosure.

| Player and source | Period and figure | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Nikola Zigic — Guardian/Press Association | Reported in February 2013: £50,000-plus per week | Contemporary reported wage after Birmingham’s relegation; exact amount not stated. Source. |
| Jay Stansfield — SalaryLeaks | From his 2024 Birmingham contract: £30,000 per week, or £1.6 million per year | SalaryLeaks’ displayed base-salary estimate, with potential annual bonuses; not an official disclosure. The site says EFL salary data is rarely published and many figures are informed estimates. Club salary page; Stansfield profile. |
| Jay Stansfield — Capology | 2026/27 estimate: £12,500 per week, or £650,000 per season | Estimated gross fixed salary, excluding bonuses; Capology lists the contract period as August 2024 to June 2031. Capology profile. |
The sources do not explain why the two Stansfield estimates differ. They may use different seasons, methodologies, or treatments of base, fixed pay and bonuses, but the available information does not establish which explanation applies.
Was Zigic paid just under five times as much?
The near-fivefold comparison is not supported by these figures. Using the reported £50,000 weekly floor for Zigic, the arithmetic gives:

- Vintage Football Merchandise design. Officially licensed by the United Football League.
- Featuring custom artwork by BreakingT.
- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
- Against Capology’s 2026/27 Stansfield estimate of £12,500 a week: £50,000 is exactly four times that estimate. Since Zigic’s reported amount was above £50,000, this comparison would be above four times if the figures were comparable.
- Against SalaryLeaks’ Stansfield estimate of £30,000 a week: £50,000 is about 1.7 times that estimate; Zigic’s reported amount was higher, but the source does not say by how much.
These are arithmetic comparisons, not verified like-for-like salary ratios. They pair a 2013 reported wage with later estimates, and the sources do not establish matching definitions or bonus treatment.

The same report quoted Birmingham manager Lee Clark criticising Zigic’s training performance: “I witnessed possibly the worst training session in terms of a professional footballer I have ever come across on Thursday.” That is context for the contemporary report, not evidence explaining or confirming the wage. The Guardian report attributes the quotation to Clark.
