For a new U.S. retiree planning 30 years of inflation-adjusted spending, a useful current benchmark is $19,500 in the first year from a $500,000 portfolio. That is a 3.9% initial withdrawal rate from Morningstar’s 2025 retirement-income analysis. The model used a 90% probability-of-success target, a portfolio with roughly 30% to 50% equities, and no Social Security or other nonportfolio income.
This is a planning benchmark, not a promise that your money will last or a personal recommendation. Your retirement length, asset allocation, spending flexibility, account taxes and guaranteed income can produce a materially different answer.

The core calculation
Multiply the starting withdrawal rate by the portfolio value:
3.9% × $500,000 = $19,500 in year one.
Under the fixed-real method used for the benchmark, you begin with $19,500 and raise that dollar amount in later years to reflect inflation. You do not simply withdraw 3.9% of whatever the account happens to be worth each year. If the balance falls, the inflation-adjusted dollar target can become a larger percentage of the remaining portfolio; if returns are strong, it becomes a smaller percentage.

The familiar 4% arithmetic would produce $20,000 in the first year. That is $500 more than the 3.9% benchmark, but the two figures should not be treated as identical rules. Morningstar’s 3.9% figure is tied to explicit assumptions about horizon, asset mix, spending method and modeled success.
| Initial rate | First-year withdrawal from $500,000 | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 3.9% | $19,500 | Morningstar’s 30-year benchmark for inflation-adjusted spending and a 90% modeled success criterion |
| 4.0% | $20,000 | Rule-of-thumb arithmetic; not the same as the current benchmark |
| Nearly 6.0% | About $30,000 | Illustrative starting amount for some flexible strategies; later spending can change substantially |
All three calculations are gross portfolio withdrawals. None tells you how much cash you will have after federal, state or local taxes.
What Morningstar’s 3.9% benchmark assumes
A 30-year retirement
The base case is designed for a retiree who needs the portfolio to support withdrawals for 30 years. That could describe someone retiring around a traditional retirement age, but age alone does not establish the right horizon. A younger retiree, a couple with different life expectancies, or anyone seeking a substantial bequest may need a longer planning period. A person already well into retirement may have fewer years left to fund.

A 90% modeled probability of success
In this context, 90% means the model left money in the portfolio at the end of the modeled period in 90% of its simulated outcomes under the stated assumptions. It is not a forecast of your personal odds. Markets can behave differently from the returns, inflation and valuation assumptions used in the model, and your spending pattern may not match the modeled one.
Roughly 30% to 50% equities
The highest starting rate in the cited 30-year case applied to portfolios in this approximate stock range. Morningstar found that more equity-heavy mixes generally supported lower starting rates across its tested horizons. Higher stock exposure can increase long-term return potential, but it also increases volatility and the damage a bad sequence of returns can do when withdrawals are already being taken. The finding is not a universal instruction to hold a particular stock-and-bond mix.
No Social Security or other nonportfolio income
The $19,500 figure is the amount drawn from investments alone. It does not include Social Security, a pension, an annuity or employment income. If guaranteed income covers part of your spending, your portfolio may need to supply less cash; if you have no other income, it may need to supply more.

Why the retirement horizon changes the percentage
Morningstar’s later-retirement analysis illustrates how a shorter remaining horizon can support a larger modeled starting percentage. The figures below are examples from that analysis, not guarantees for a particular account.

| Modeled period | Illustrative starting rate | Arithmetic on $500,000 |
|---|---|---|
| 30 years | 3.9% | $19,500 in year one |
| 25 years | 4.4% | $22,000 in year one |
| 10 years | 9.7% | $48,500 in year one |
The 25- and 10-year examples come from an analysis of retirees already in retirement that varied return sequences across 1,000 simulations. A shorter period gives the portfolio fewer years in which a severe decline must be recovered while withdrawals continue. It does not mean a retiree with a 10-year statistical horizon should automatically spend 9.7%: living expenses, health costs, longevity uncertainty and a desire to leave assets to heirs can all require a more conservative plan.
Fixed-real withdrawals and sequence-of-returns risk
The fixed-real approach is attractive because it gives you a relatively stable spending target. You set the first-year dollar amount, then adjust it for inflation rather than recalculating from the balance every January. That stability protects the purchasing power of your planned budget, but it does not protect the account balance.

The order of returns matters. A large market decline in the first five retirement years can force you to sell more shares to fund the same inflation-adjusted withdrawal. If spending is not reduced after poor early returns, the portfolio has less capital available for a later recovery. Morningstar identifies those first years as especially consequential when retirees keep spending unchanged.
A cash reserve or a high-quality bond allocation can help you avoid selling depressed assets, but the cited benchmark does not specify a reserve size or a particular implementation. Those choices belong in a plan that reflects your expenses, account types and tolerance for spending cuts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFlexible methods can start higher, but spending moves
Some of Morningstar’s tested flexible strategies support an initial withdrawal near 6%, or roughly $30,000 from $500,000. The trade-off is that the dollar amount is allowed to respond to portfolio performance. A higher initial figure therefore cannot be compared with $19,500 as if both promised the same inflation-adjusted lifestyle.

| Method | How the annual amount is set | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed-real | Start with a dollar amount and increase it for inflation | More stable spending, but greater depletion risk after poor early returns if cuts are not made |
| Constant percentage | Apply a chosen percentage to the portfolio’s current balance each year | Spending automatically falls after a market decline and rises after gains, so income is variable |
| Guardrails | Begin with a target amount and change it when portfolio performance crosses preselected limits | Can support a higher starting amount, but requires willingness to cut spending after weak results |
A constant-percentage plan is straightforward: if the balance drops, the next withdrawal drops too. That limits the chance of exhausting the account, but it can make essential expenses difficult to meet. Guardrails seek a middle ground by preserving a target lifestyle within limits and requiring a reduction when the portfolio falls far enough. The specific thresholds and cut sizes must be chosen in advance; the cited figures do not establish one universal guardrail formula.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How Social Security and guaranteed income fit
Portfolio withdrawals are only one part of retirement cash flow. Social Security, a pension or an annuity can cover baseline expenses and reduce the amount the portfolio must provide. Morningstar discusses delaying Social Security as potentially effective when flexible portfolio withdrawals can fund the bridge period before benefits begin. That strategy depends on your claiming record, health, marital situation, other income and ability to tolerate temporary withdrawals, so it is not an automatic recommendation.
An annuity can convert part of a portfolio into a stream of guaranteed payments, while leaving less money under your direct control. Contract guarantees, inflation features, fees, liquidity and insurer strength all matter. The 3.9% calculation does not assume an annuity and should not be presented as a substitute for comparing guaranteed-income options.
Gross withdrawals are not after-tax spending
$19,500 is a withdrawal from investments, not a promise of $19,500 available for household purchases. The tax result depends on whether the money comes from a traditional tax-deferred account, a Roth account, a taxable account or a combination; on your filing status and state; and on your other income. Required distributions, capital gains and the taxation of Social Security can also affect the amount you keep.
To estimate spendable cash, list each account separately, identify the tax treatment of a withdrawal, and have a tax professional model the result for your situation. Do not increase the withdrawal rate simply because a gross figure looks smaller after an assumed tax adjustment; taxes can change from year to year.
A practical way to use the benchmark
- Choose a planning horizon. Start with 30 years only if that period reasonably reflects your age, health, family longevity and bequest objective. Test a longer period when uncertainty is high.
- Inventory the portfolio. Record the current stock, bond and cash percentages, along with account locations. The 3.9% benchmark is associated with roughly 30% to 50% equities; a materially different allocation means you are outside that exact case.
- Separate essential and discretionary spending. Housing, food, insurance and medical costs may need protection even when travel or gifts can be reduced. This distinction determines whether a flexible method is realistic.
- Calculate the gross first-year amount. For the benchmark, multiply $500,000 by 0.039 to get $19,500. Treat that as a starting withdrawal, not an annual entitlement.
- Add other income on its own schedule. Map Social Security, pensions, annuity payments and part-time earnings by start date. Do not count them as portfolio withdrawals.
- Estimate taxes by account. Project the net cash from each withdrawal source rather than applying one assumed tax rate to the entire portfolio.
- Set review rules before retirement. Decide how often you will reassess the balance, inflation-adjusted spending and market losses, and what expenses you would trim after a weak sequence. A written rule is easier to follow than an emergency decision during a downturn.
- Revisit the plan after major changes. Recalculate after a large market move, a change in housing or health costs, a new benefit decision, or a change in the desired legacy.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling 3.9% universally safe. It is a model estimate tied to a 30-year period, a 90% criterion, a particular allocation range and fixed-real spending.
- Confusing a percentage-of-balance plan with fixed-real spending. Taking 3.9% of the current balance every year produces changing income and is not the same procedure used for the $19,500 calculation.
- Using the 6% illustration as stable income. Flexible strategies can begin near that level because they permit later reductions; they do not guarantee $30,000 plus inflation every year.
- Ignoring the first five years. Early losses combined with unchanged withdrawals can do more damage than the same losses later in retirement.
- Leaving taxes out of the budget. A gross withdrawal should not be labeled after-tax spending without account and taxpayer details.
- Assuming a shorter horizon is certain. A 10-year model can justify a higher mathematical rate while still being inappropriate for someone who may live, spend or give for much longer.
- Changing the asset mix to chase a percentage. The allocation associated with one modeled result is not a prescription for every investor’s risk capacity or goals.
Bottom line for a $500,000 portfolio
Use $19,500 in the first year as a cautious reference point for a 30-year U.S. retirement seeking inflation-adjusted spending under Morningstar’s 90% modeled-success framework. A 25-year horizon produces a higher modeled example, while flexible spending can begin near $30,000, but both options require trade-offs that the fixed-real benchmark avoids. Your sustainable amount is the result of coordinating the horizon, portfolio mix, spending flexibility, taxes and guaranteed income—not selecting one percentage in isolation.
