How to Find Out Whether Your Social Security Benefits Could Be Reduced

Find out whether work could affect your Social Security by checking your benefit type and full retirement age, counting wages and self-employment income, and using the SSA earnings test calculator.

To find out whether working could reduce your Social Security payments, first identify your benefit type and full retirement age, then estimate your wages and net self-employment income for the calendar year and enter them in the Social Security Administration’s Retirement Earnings Test Calculator. The 2026 earnings limit is $24,480 for someone under full retirement age all year, or $65,160 in the year they reach it; the rules change once full retirement age begins. A smaller deposit can also have causes unrelated to work, including an early-claiming reduction or Medicare premium deduction.

Start with your Social Security record and benefit type

A general earnings limit cannot tell you exactly what will happen to your own payment. The result depends on your birth date, the kind of benefit you receive, when you began receiving it, your counted earnings, and the earnings record Social Security uses to calculate your benefit.

Review your account and earnings history

  1. Sign in to your Social Security account and review your earnings history. Look for missing or incorrect wages, because the benefit estimate is based on that record.
  2. Review your personalized retirement estimates at different claiming ages. The estimate can also be adjusted to reflect expected future income, which helps you see how continued work could affect the benefit calculation.
  3. Write down the monthly benefit amount shown and the age or date at which you expect to claim or have already claimed. You will need the estimate for the earnings calculator.

For an individual record or estimate, use the Social Security Administration’s online account and calculators rather than treating the annual limits in this article as a personal determination.

Identify exactly which benefit you receive

Check whether your payment is a retirement benefit, survivor benefit, spouse or other family benefit, or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). These are not interchangeable categories. Spouse and family benefits can have calculations and timing rules that differ from a worker’s own retirement benefit, and disability benefits follow separate work rules.

If you are eligible on your own record and as a spouse, the Social Security Administration generally pays your own benefit first and adds any spouse amount needed to reach the higher total. Its 2026 retirement guide says an eligible spouse may qualify for up to half of a retired worker’s full benefit at the spouse’s full retirement age; claiming the spouse benefit earlier reduces it. The guide also describes deemed filing for many people born on or after January 2, 1954. These rules are reasons to identify the benefit on your record and review your own estimate instead of assuming a payment is based only on your work history.

Find your full retirement age—not just your age today

Full retirement age (FRA) is the age used for Social Security retirement-benefit rules. It varies by birth year. For people born in 1960 or later, FRA is 67. Use the Social Security Administration’s birth-year schedule to find your own FRA; do not assume that age 65 is the relevant point.

Age 65 is a Medicare eligibility milestone, not the Social Security full retirement age. The distinction matters because the earnings test changes at FRA, not at age 65. If you reach FRA during a calendar year, the higher earnings limit applies only to earnings before the month you reach it. Beginning with that month, earnings no longer reduce benefits under the retirement earnings test, regardless of how much you earn.

Know which income counts for the earnings test

The retirement earnings test is about earnings from work—not every source of money. For this test, the Social Security Administration counts wages and net earnings from self-employment. Wages can include bonuses, commissions, and vacation pay.

Income counted as earnings

  • Wages from employment.
  • Net earnings from self-employment.
  • Bonuses, commissions, and vacation pay included as wages.

Income that is not counted for this test

  • Pensions and annuities.
  • Investment income and interest.
  • Veterans benefits and other government or military retirement benefits.

Do not add those excluded sources to your earnings-test total just because they contribute to your overall income. Conversely, do not omit self-employment earnings or variable pay when estimating your counted earnings. If you work outside the United States, different work-test rules may apply; the U.S. limits below do not establish how your work will affect payments abroad.

Compare your earnings with the 2026 limits

The Social Security Administration’s 2026 figures set two limits, depending on whether you are under FRA all year or reach FRA during the year.

When the earnings test applies 2026 exempt amount Withholding above the limit
Under full retirement age for all of 2026 $24,480 for the year $1 for every $2 of counted earnings above the limit
Reach full retirement age during 2026 $65,160 for the year, counting only earnings before the month you reach full retirement age $1 for every $3 of counted earnings above the limit
Full retirement age reached No earnings limit starting with the month you reach full retirement age Earnings from that month onward do not reduce benefits under the retirement earnings test

These are annual 2026 amounts, not permanent limits. Check the Social Security Administration’s latest annual figures and calculator for the year in which you expect to earn the income. The $24,480 and $65,160 amounts are earnings-test limits; they are not limits on how much you can work or earn.

What the withholding calculation looks like

The Social Security Administration gives an example for a person under FRA all year in 2026 who earns $33,400 and is due $800 per month. Counted earnings exceed the $24,480 limit by $8,920. Withholding at $1 for each $2 over the limit is $4,460. The example says the person receives $5,140 in benefits that year.

For a person who reaches FRA in August 2026, the Administration’s example uses $72,000 in total earnings, including $66,000 earned before August. The amount before the FRA month exceeds the $65,160 limit by $840. Withholding at $1 for each $3 over the limit is $280, with full monthly benefits beginning in August. The relevant earnings period is therefore not necessarily the full calendar year when you reach FRA.

These examples illustrate the withholding formula; they do not determine an individual’s payment schedule. Your benefit amount, timing, and earnings record matter, and the Administration’s calculator is the appropriate next step.

Use the Retirement Earnings Test Calculator

The Social Security Administration’s Retirement Earnings Test Calculator provides an estimate of how work may affect benefits. It asks for your date of birth, estimated earnings, estimated monthly benefit, and whether this is your first year receiving benefits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Gather your birth date, estimated monthly benefit, and expected counted earnings for the calendar year.
  2. Open the Social Security Administration’s Retirement Earnings Test Calculator and enter the requested information.
  3. Answer the question about whether this is your first year receiving benefits accurately.
  4. Review the result alongside your account and earnings record. Treat it as an estimate, not a final determination of entitlement or a substitute for an individual notice from the Administration.
  5. If your expected earnings change, or the result does not match a notice or payment, contact the Social Security Administration with your earnings estimate and benefit details.

Why first-year status matters

The first year you receive benefits can involve a special monthly rule. That means a simple annual comparison of earnings with the limit may not be enough when you began benefits partway through the year. The calculator asks whether this is your first year for that reason. If it is, use the calculator rather than trying to infer the outcome from the annual limit alone.

This is especially important if you stopped working or retired partway through the year. Your annual wages may look high even though you were not working during every month you received benefits. The special first-year rule may affect which months can be paid, so enter the requested details carefully and verify the estimate with SSA if your circumstances are unusual.

Distinguish temporary withholding from a lower benefit amount

People use “reduced” to mean several different things. The distinction determines what to check and whom to contact.

Possible cause What changes What to examine
Earnings test Before FRA, benefit payments may be withheld if counted earnings exceed the applicable limit. The Social Security Administration later adjusts benefits to account for months reduced or withheld under the test. Your birth year and FRA, wages or net self-employment earnings, benefit amount, and whether this is your first year receiving benefits.
Claiming retirement benefits early The monthly retirement amount is generally lower than if you had waited until FRA. This is a benefit-calculation effect, not earnings-test withholding. Your personalized estimates at different claiming ages.
Spouse or family benefit calculation The benefit may be calculated using relationship, eligibility, and timing rules rather than being identical to a worker’s own benefit. The type of benefit and the claimant’s eligibility and claim age.
Medicare premium or tax withholding The net deposit can be lower than the gross benefit without a change to the underlying benefit amount. Your benefit and payment notices for a Medicare Part B premium deduction or tax withholding.
Work while receiving disability benefits Work can affect SSDI under separate rules, not the retirement earnings-test limits. Your benefit type and Social Security disability-specific work guidance.
Pension from work not covered by Social Security The pension no longer reduces applicable Social Security retirement or spouse benefits under WEP/GPO for months after December 2023. Current Social Security Administration guidance if your payment record does not reflect the change.

Withholding is not automatically a permanent cut

The earnings test can mean payments are withheld before FRA; it does not mean the withheld amount is automatically a permanent reduction to the monthly benefit. The Social Security Administration says it recalculates benefits at FRA to credit months in which benefits were reduced or withheld because of excess earnings. Continued work can also increase a later monthly benefit if new earnings replace a lower-earning year in the worker’s record.

Early claiming is a separate decision

Starting retirement benefits before FRA generally lowers the monthly retirement amount compared with waiting until FRA. The amount depends on your birth year and claim age. That reduction is part of the benefit calculation, so it is different from the earnings test, which may withhold payments when a person under FRA has counted earnings above the applicable limit. Compare your personalized estimates at different claiming ages to see the effect on your own record.

A smaller deposit may reflect deductions

Medicare Part B premiums may be deducted from a Social Security payment. A person may also owe income tax on benefits or arrange for tax withholding. Those deductions affect the net amount deposited; they do not, by themselves, show that the underlying benefit changed because of work. Read the payment details and notices to distinguish a gross benefit amount from the deposit.

Do not use retirement limits for disability benefits

If your benefit is SSDI rather than retirement, do not apply the $24,480 or $65,160 retirement earnings-test limits. The Social Security Administration lists separate 2026 disability work figures: $1,690 per month for the non-blind substantial gainful activity threshold, $2,830 per month for blind beneficiaries, and $1,210 per month for the trial work period amount. These are disability-program figures, not retirement earnings-test limits. Disability work rules can depend on the person’s circumstances, so use the Administration’s disability-specific guidance for an individual case.

Understand figures that affect an estimate but are not earnings-test limits

The Social Security Administration lists a 2026 Social Security taxable maximum of $184,500. Earnings above that annual maximum do not increase a benefit estimate through additional covered earnings. This is different from the retirement earnings-test limits: the taxable maximum concerns the earnings credited for benefit calculations, while the earnings test concerns whether payments may be withheld before FRA.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Administration’s 2026 cost-of-living adjustment is 2.8%. A COLA changes the benefit amount, but it is not an earnings-test reduction. If your payment changes, look at the explanation and payment details rather than assuming that either a COLA or a work-related withholding is responsible.

What to do if the estimate or payment seems wrong

  • Check your Social Security earnings history for missing or incorrect wages, and follow up to correct the record.
  • Compare your expected counted earnings with the calculator’s assumptions. Include wages and net self-employment earnings, including bonuses, commissions, or vacation pay where applicable.
  • Confirm your birth year and the month you reach FRA. For the year you reach FRA, only earnings before that month are subject to the higher annual limit.
  • Read the payment notice and benefit details to see whether the change is an earnings-test withholding, a Medicare premium, or tax withholding.
  • Contact the Social Security Administration if your expected earnings changed, a notice does not match your information, or you need a determination for your circumstances. Have your benefit type, birth date, earnings estimate, and relevant notice available.

The official amounts here are U.S. 2026 figures reviewed October 8, 2026. They cannot establish an individual’s entitlement or calculate a personalized reduction; a precise answer depends on personal facts and the Social Security earnings record.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much can I earn in 2026 and still receive Social Security retirement benefits?

If you are under full retirement age for all of 2026, the exempt amount is $24,480. SSA withholds $1 for every $2 of counted earnings above that amount. If you reach full retirement age during 2026, the higher exempt amount is $65,160, and only earnings before the month you reach full retirement age count; withholding is $1 for every $3 above that limit. Beginning with the month you reach full retirement age, there is no earnings limit under this test. These figures apply to wages and net self-employment earnings, not every type of income.

Will Social Security permanently cut my benefit if I earn over the limit?

Not necessarily. Before full retirement age, SSA may withhold some benefit payments when counted earnings exceed the applicable limit. SSA later recalculates benefits at full retirement age to credit months in which payments were reduced or withheld under the earnings test. Continued work may also raise a later benefit if new earnings replace a lower year in your earnings record. A personal result depends on your benefit amount, earnings, timing, and record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does pension, investment, or interest income count toward the Social Security earnings limit?

No. For the retirement earnings test, SSA counts wages and net earnings from self-employment. Pensions, annuities, investment income, interest, veterans benefits, and other government or military retirement benefits are not counted for this test. Bonuses, commissions, and vacation pay are included as wages.

What if I started receiving benefits partway through the year?

Use SSA’s Retirement Earnings Test Calculator and answer its question about whether this is your first year receiving benefits. A special monthly rule can apply in the first year, so a simple comparison of total annual earnings with the limit may not tell you which months can be paid. If you stopped working or retired during the year, check the calculator result against your circumstances and contact SSA if it does not make sense.

Is the earnings limit the same if I receive SSDI or work after full retirement age?

No. The retirement earnings-test limits do not apply to SSDI; disability benefits have separate work rules. SSA’s 2026 figures include a $1,690 monthly non-blind substantial gainful activity threshold, a $2,830 threshold for blind beneficiaries, and a $1,210 trial work period amount. If you receive retirement benefits, earnings from the month you reach full retirement age onward do not reduce them under the earnings test, no matter how much you earn.

Why is my Social Security deposit lower than the amount I expected?

A lower net deposit does not always mean the underlying benefit was reduced because of work. Medicare Part B premiums may be deducted, and tax withholding may also reduce the amount deposited. Review your benefit and payment notices to distinguish those deductions from an earnings-test withholding or an early-claiming reduction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

To check whether work could affect your Social Security, confirm your benefit type and full retirement age, review your SSA earnings record, estimate wages and net self-employment income, and use the Retirement Earnings Test Calculator. For 2026, the applicable limit is $24,480 if you are under full retirement age all year, or $65,160 for earnings before the full-retirement-age month in the year you reach it. A withholding is not automatically permanent, and a smaller deposit may instead reflect early claiming, Medicare premiums, or tax withholding. Use your SSA account and notices for a personal answer.
