Cash-back is generally calculated on eligible transactions charged to a card account, not on how friends or household members later divide the bill. If one cardholder pays $100 and others reimburse them, the issuer applies the account’s reward rules to the card charge; it does not automatically divide the cash back among the people who shared the expense. Authorized-user purchases on the same account commonly count under that account’s terms, while split tender, separate accounts and joint accounts require closer attention to the specific agreements.
What counts as a shared purchase?
“Shared purchase” can describe several different arrangements, and the reward calculation depends on which one you mean. A card issuer processes transactions on an account. It generally does not know whether the cardholder later collects money from roommates, splits a restaurant bill with friends, or is paying for a household expense. Those arrangements can look identical to the issuer if they result in the same eligible charge to the same card.

For U.S. credit-card programs, the practical starting point is the transaction that appears on the account. The account’s rewards terms determine whether that charge qualifies, which rate applies, and how returns or other adjustments affect the reward. Personal agreements about who owes whom are separate from those issuer rules.
- One person pays, others reimburse: The cardholder makes one charge; private reimbursements do not, by themselves, create separate reward claims with the issuer.
- Several people use one card account: Authorized-user charges commonly earn according to the primary account’s program terms.
- A merchant divides the payment across cards: Each submitted card charge is a separate transaction to assess under that card’s terms.
- People use separate primary accounts or a joint account: Do not assume authorized-user rules apply; check the agreements for that account structure.
How the cash-back calculation works
A useful way to estimate a reward is:
Eligible net purchase amount × applicable reward rate = approximate cash back

This is an illustration, not a universal issuer formula. The result can be affected by category qualification, program caps, exclusions, returns or credits, transaction timing and the issuer’s rounding method.
For example, if an eligible $100 charge earns at a hypothetical 2% rate, the raw arithmetic is $2 in cash back before any program-specific cap or adjustment. The 2% rate is only an example, not a claim about a particular card. If the cardholder then collects $25 each from four people, that repayment does not itself tell the issuer to allocate the $2 reward among them. The reviewed issuer terms describe how purchases earn under an account, not how people should divide rewards under a private reimbursement arrangement.
For an estimate, use the eligible charge amount rather than the amount each person eventually pays the cardholder. Then apply the rate that the account’s terms assign to that transaction. Treat the estimate as provisional until the purchase is posted and any relevant returns, credits or adjustments have been accounted for.

Do authorized users earn cash back?
Often, yes: issuer guidance commonly treats authorized-user purchases as earning under the primary account’s rewards terms. U.S. Bank says rewards for an authorized user’s purchases are based on the account owner’s card terms. Capital One says account managers and authorized users earn at the same rate as the account holder, and Robinhood’s terms describe user and authorized-user activity as consolidated under the account. Comenity’s AAA Daily Advantage terms also include eligible purchases made by authorized users.

That usually means the purchase is evaluated under the account’s rate and eligibility rules; it does not necessarily mean the authorized user receives a separate reward balance or can redeem rewards independently. The issuer’s program determines how rewards are tracked and who can access them. Before adding someone, check the account terms for who can use the card, view the rewards balance and redeem rewards, as well as the account’s payment and liability provisions.
Authorized-user examples should not be extended automatically to joint accounts or two people who each hold a separate primary account. Those are different account arrangements, and the sources above do not establish one rule for how rewards are combined or owned across them.
Who gets the rewards when we split a bill?
If one person charges the full bill to their account, the issuer calculates rewards under that account’s terms. The issuer does not ordinarily receive information about the later Venmo, bank transfer, cash payment or other reimbursement between the people who shared the expense. The cardholder and the other participants therefore need to agree among themselves whether the reward belongs to the person who paid, is shared, or is handled some other way.

For instance, a cardholder might charge a $100 household purchase and collect $50 from another household member. If the charge qualifies at a hypothetical 2% rate, the account-level illustration is $2 before program adjustments. That arithmetic does not establish that either person is entitled to a particular share of the reward. If splitting the reward matters, settle the arrangement with the other participants rather than expecting the issuer to infer it from reimbursement.

What happens when the merchant splits payment across cards?
When a merchant submits one part of a bill to one card and the remainder to another, each card receives its own transaction amount. Assess each posted charge separately using the corresponding account’s reward terms, rate, eligibility rules and any relevant category treatment. For example, if a merchant submits $60 to one card and $40 to another for a $100 bill, the reward estimate is based on the $60 transaction under the first card’s rules and the $40 transaction under the second card’s rules—not on an assumed $100 charge to either account.
The reviewed issuer guidance does not set a universal rule for split-tender transactions. The merchant determines how it submits the payments, and the resulting charges may be coded or processed in ways that affect rewards. Check both posted transactions after the sale rather than assuming the card statement will show one combined purchase or that both cards will receive the same rate.
Which charges qualify, and which can be excluded?
A transaction appearing on a statement is not necessarily an eligible purchase for rewards. Eligibility and exclusions differ by program. American Express’s published cash-back terms, for example, define eligible purchases net of returns and credits and exclude specified types such as fees and interest, balance transfers, cash advances, traveler’s checks, prepaid reloads, cash equivalents, gift cards and person-to-person transactions. Robinhood’s reward terms give other examples, including certain third-party bill payments and person-to-person payments.
These are examples from named programs, not an all-issuer exclusion list. Whether a particular transaction qualifies depends on the exact account terms. A cardholder splitting a household bill through a payment service should check those terms rather than assume that the payment earns the same way as an ordinary purchase from a merchant.

When checking an account’s terms, look for the definition of “eligible purchase” and any exclusions that describe the transaction you plan to make. Also look for language about whether rewards are calculated before or after credits and returns; that can determine whether an initially earned amount remains in the account.
Why a purchase may miss a bonus category
Bonus rewards may depend on the merchant category code attached to the transaction, not simply on what the cardholder bought. Chase explains that merchants and processors assign category codes and that transaction processing can affect whether a charge qualifies for a bonus category. As a result, an item that seems to fit a category based on its product or purpose may not receive that category’s bonus rate.
This distinction matters for shared purchases because several people may contribute to a bill whose merchant category is not obvious. A restaurant meal, for example, is processed as a charge from the merchant, not as separate purchases for each diner. Do not promise participants a particular bonus rate just because the shared expense sounds like it belongs in a card’s advertised category. The posted transaction and the program’s category rules determine the applicable treatment.
How returns, refunds and credits affect rewards
Rewards can be adjusted when a purchase is returned or a credit is applied. Comenity’s AAA Daily Advantage terms define Net Eligible Purchases after returns, refunds or credit adjustments; Chase describes purchases net of returns or refunds. Depending on the program, the adjustment may reduce eligible spend or reverse rewards associated with the original transaction.

That can matter when the participants have already divided the bill or settled reimbursement. If a shared purchase is later partially refunded, the issuer applies its own adjustment to the card account. The people who split the cost may need to settle the refund and any corresponding reward adjustment between themselves; the issuer’s calculation does not automatically manage that private accounting.
When do rewards post, and how is the amount rounded?
Reward timing and rounding are program-specific. The AAA Daily Advantage terms from Comenity provide one concrete example: they state that reward earnings are rounded to the nearest whole cent using standard rounding. Those terms also base cash back on the purchase date, which may differ from the date the transaction posts to the account. These are details of that program, not industry-wide rules.
A difference between purchase date and posting date can matter near a category or promotional period boundary if a program uses a particular date to determine eligibility. To understand a disputed amount, compare the purchase date, the posting date, the transaction’s category and the terms in effect for that account. Do not assume another issuer uses the same date or rounding approach as Comenity’s example.

- Identify the account and transaction structure. Determine whether the charge is on one person’s primary account, an authorized user’s card on that account, a joint account or multiple separate accounts.
- Find the posted card charges. For a one-card payment, start with the full posted transaction. For split tender, identify each card’s separately submitted amount.
- Check eligibility. Review the account’s definition of eligible purchases and exclusions for the transaction type.
- Determine the rate. Apply the base rate or a bonus-category rate only if the transaction qualifies under the program’s rules and coding.
- Account for changes. Check for returns, refunds or credits that may reduce eligible spend or reverse rewards.
- Use the issuer’s timing and rounding rules. Compare the reward activity with the terms’ stated date basis and rounding method where those are provided.
- Settle reimbursements separately. Decide among the people sharing the cost how to handle any reward or later refund; do not expect the issuer to allocate it based on private repayments.
What to verify before relying on an estimate
Rewards terms can differ across issuers and change over time. Before using a calculation to divide a shared cost, consult the current agreement or rewards terms for the exact account. Confirm whether authorized users’ purchases are included, who controls redemption, what qualifies as an eligible purchase, which categories and caps apply, how credits are treated, and how transaction dates and rounding work.
If the transaction involves a third-party payment service, a joint account, multiple primary accounts or split tender, pay particular attention to the account language and the charges that actually post. The available issuer examples establish common account-level treatment for authorized users, but they do not settle every account structure or every way a merchant can divide payment.
