Gold and silver prices in India start with international precious-metal benchmarks, but the rate you see in rupees also reflects currency movements and domestic market conditions. A published Indian reference rate is not automatically the price a jeweller will charge: purity, weight, taxes, making charges and seller pricing can all affect the final bill.
To understand a quote, first identify what it measures: an international benchmark, an Indian spot reference, an exchange price or a retail offer. Then check its metal, purity, unit, timestamp and included charges.

How an international price becomes an Indian rupee reference
International precious-metal prices provide the starting point for Indian gold and silver rates. For gold, one important reference is the LBMA precious-metal price, for which ICE Benchmark Administration describes an electronic auction. Its account says the auction algorithm considers current market conditions and order activity. That is a benchmark-setting process—not a direct quote for a particular Indian shop’s inventory or jewellery.
Because international benchmarks are commonly quoted in US dollars, movement in the rupee-dollar exchange rate affects the rupee value of the metal. If the dollar strengthens against the rupee, the same dollar-denominated metal price translates into a higher rupee amount, all else equal. If the rupee strengthens, the currency effect can move the other way. Currency conversion is only one influence, however, and a simple conversion does not yield a complete current Indian retail price.

The World Gold Council’s 2019 methodology identifies the exchange rate, local taxes, import restrictions and seasonal factors as influences on Indian gold premiums or discounts relative to the international price. These factors help explain why a domestic quote can differ from a converted global benchmark. They do not establish a current import-duty rate or a fixed premium that applies nationwide.
It is useful to think of this as a chain rather than one universal calculation: an international benchmark provides a starting reference; currency translation expresses that value in rupees; local market conditions can move the domestic price above or below a simple conversion; and a particular reference publisher or seller applies its own stated process. A retail invoice then adds the terms of the specific transaction. Each stage answers a different question, so a figure from one stage should not be substituted for a figure from another.
What the main Indian price references mean
IBJA’s polled reference rates
The India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA) says it polls tradable prices from 29 physical-market participants twice each business day. Its published mechanism describes polling during 11:30 a.m.–12:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.–5:00 p.m.; rates are displayed around 12:05 p.m. and 5:05 p.m. on business days. IBJA says it averages the quotes after discarding the highest and lowest. These are indicative timings and a described methodology, not a promise that every market participant trades at the displayed rate.

They do not mean the rate is a national mandated selling price, nor do they establish that every jeweller supplied a quote. The two daily windows also matter when comparing rates: a morning reference and an afternoon reference may reflect different market conditions, and a shop may set its quote at another time.
IBJA says its rates include import-duty and customs-related taxes and levies, but exclude GST and certain other taxes or surcharges. It also says the displayed rates exclude making charges. So an IBJA figure can be useful as a domestic reference for the metal, while still being different from the total a customer pays for jewellery.
NSE spot references
The National Stock Exchange (NSE) also describes polling for gold and silver spot prices. Its stated method uses a trimmed mean, removing observations outside predetermined boundaries. This is not necessarily the same calculation as IBJA’s described practice of discarding the highest and lowest quotes. A reference produced under one method should not be treated as interchangeable with a reference produced under another.

NSE’s page specifies metal purity and rupee units for its spot references. Since purity, unit conventions and market details matter when comparing rates, check the current NSE page for the exact specification attached to the figure you are using. An exchange-published spot reference is also distinct from a futures price or a finished-jewellery quote.
“Spot” and “futures” describe different price types. A spot reference is intended to represent a current market reference for the specified metal and basis; a futures price relates to an exchange-traded contract with its own contract terms. Neither label by itself tells you the final price for a particular jewellery item. Always identify the contract or reference and its specifications rather than comparing figures based only on the word “gold” or “silver.”
Retail quotes and futures prices
A jeweller’s quote is a seller’s price for a particular product or transaction, not simply another name for an international benchmark or an association’s reference rate. Retail pricing can reflect the metal’s purity and weight, the seller’s pricing choices, taxes and, for jewellery, making charges. Futures prices are another price type: they relate to exchange-traded contracts rather than necessarily representing the immediate price for a particular piece of jewellery or a physical purchase from a shop.
Why shop prices can differ from reference rates
A jewellery invoice can combine several components. The metal value depends on the weight and purity used for the calculation; GST, making charges and seller-specific pricing may also affect the bill. A rate stated per gram of one purity cannot be compared directly with a quote for a different purity, a different unit or a finished item whose charges are included.
IBJA explicitly distinguishes its metal reference from GST and making charges: it says those are excluded from its displayed rates. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) FAQ also describes a particular kind of gold-metal arrangement in which a jeweller fixes the metal price later, or an invoice uses an international or domestic market rate. That is an example of an arrangement, not evidence that every jeweller uses the same process or that a single formula governs all shops.
For a practical comparison, ask the seller what rate was used, when it was set, which purity and weight it covers, and which charges are added separately. A price that looks lower may exclude costs included in another seller’s displayed total. Conversely, a reference-rate difference may reflect timing or methodology rather than a better retail deal.

When checking an invoice, separate the metal calculation from the other line items instead of relying only on the headline rate. Confirm whether the stated rate applies to the item’s actual purity, which weight is used, and whether making charges are included or listed separately. Then check how applicable taxes are shown. This makes it easier to identify whether a difference comes from the metal rate, the product specifications, added charges or the time at which the rate was fixed. The exact treatment can depend on the transaction, so ask the seller to explain the basis used for that invoice.
Gold and silver do not always follow the same pricing procedure
Gold and silver are both influenced by international markets and currency conversion, but that does not mean every domestic reference or valuation applies the same methodology to both metals. The source of the quote and its intended use matter.
For example, an AMFI-hosted scheme document describes a silver-fund valuation approach that uses IBJA information and a suitable premium or discount informed by MCX spot prices or another approved source, followed by applicable statutory taxes and levies. This is a fund-valuation context. It is not a universal formula for a jeweller’s silverware price, a retail silver purchase or every Indian silver market.

For silver, as for gold, check the source and purpose of the number before treating it as a comparable buying price.
When comparing silver quotes, use the same checks as for gold: confirm the unit, purity or specification, timestamp and whether the figure is a spot reference, a fund valuation, a futures price or a retail quote. Do not assume that a gold reference-rate procedure automatically describes how a silver figure was arrived at.
How to compare two Indian gold or silver quotes
Before deciding whether two prices differ meaningfully, line up the details behind them. Use this checklist for a shop quote, published rate or market display:

- Metal and purity: Confirm that both figures refer to the same metal and purity. A gold quote for one purity is not directly comparable with one for another.
- Unit: Check whether the rate is per gram, per 10 grams, per kilogram or another unit. Convert only after confirming that the purity basis also matches.
- Price type: Identify whether each number is an international benchmark, a domestic polled spot reference, an exchange spot price, a futures price or a retail quote.
- Timestamp: Note the date and time. IBJA describes two business-day polling and display windows, while other references may have different publication or trading conventions.
- Taxes and levies: Check which taxes or import-related levies are included and which are excluded. IBJA says its rates include import-duty and customs-related taxes and levies but exclude GST and certain other taxes or surcharges.
- Retail costs: For jewellery, ask whether making charges and other seller costs are included or added to the metal value.
- Calculation basis: Ask how the seller determined the metal value, including the quoted rate, weight and purity applied to the item.
Only compare the resulting figures once these attributes match. If one figure is an afternoon reference and another is a shop quote set at a different time, part of the gap may be timing; if one is a metal-only rate and the other includes charges, the gap is not a like-for-like price comparison.
A useful way to make the comparison concrete is to write the details beside each quote before doing any arithmetic: for example, “gold, stated purity, rupees per stated unit, reference or retail, date and time, taxes included or excluded, making charges included or excluded.” If any entry is missing, ask for it rather than assuming both figures use the same basis. This simple check can prevent a misleading comparison between a market reference and a complete jewellery bill.

The described IBJA panel size is 29 physical-market participants, and the association says it polls twice daily on business days. Those figures explain the stated process; they do not show that all Indian jewellers contribute, follow IBJA, or must sell at its reference rate. The stated averaging rule is a way of deriving a reference from the sampled quotes, not a guarantee of a uniform national transaction price.
The World Gold Council’s 2019 methodology is useful for understanding why Indian gold premiums or discounts can move with currency, taxes, import restrictions and seasonal effects. It should not be used as a source for current tax rates. No current import-duty rate or current market price is established here, and volatile tax figures should be checked against current official notifications before they are used.
Likewise, a quoted association or exchange methodology explains how that reference is constructed, not how every market participant prices every transaction. A consumer’s best comparison is the actual like-for-like quote with its calculation basis and included charges made clear.

Why can two Indian gold rates differ on the same day?
They may refer to different times, sources, methodologies, purities, units or price types. IBJA describes morning and afternoon polling windows, and its averaging method is not necessarily the same as NSE’s trimmed-mean method. A retail quote may also include costs absent from a metal-only reference.
Does converting an international gold price into rupees give the Indian shop price?
No. Currency translation is one influence, but the World Gold Council’s 2019 methodology also identifies local taxes, import restrictions and seasonal factors as contributors to Indian premiums or discounts. A shop bill can then include GST, making charges and seller-specific pricing.
Do gold and silver use the same price-setting method in India?
