When Mokoh co-owner Andy Baker needed a mobility scooter adapted for left-side control, Zhuzh owner Alison Richards turned local goodwill into a fundraiser. Fremantle businesses and residents helped the Bakers reach a reported $6,000 goal in one week.
Why Andy Baker needed a different way to get around
Andy and Trudy Baker had run Mokoh, a business selling hand-drawn souvenirs, for close to 20 years. Their shopfront closed while the family focused on Andy’s recovery after he had a stroke in April 2022. PerthNow reported that the stroke happened at the finish line of a South Beach park run. Andy had to relearn walking and talking, and learned to draw with his non-dominant left hand to keep Mokoh’s wholesale business going.
The fundraiser was intended to pay for a lightweight mobility scooter with its control panel moved to the left, because Andy had lost mobility on his right side. The report said the lighter design would be easier for Trudy to move and could be taken on airplanes. The family hoped to travel after an earlier planned trip to Broome was thwarted when Andy’s wheelchair was unsuitable for the flight.
How the Fremantle community raised the money
In 2024, Alison Richards had opened Zhuzh on South Terrace and won the retail category at the Fremantle Business Awards, organized by the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce and voted on by the public. Richards donated her $250 cash prize to help the Bakers. She also created a way for people who wanted to assist to contribute: “I knew everybody wanted to help but didn’t know how to, so I created an opportunity for them.”

PerthNow reported on 31 October 2024 that the campaign reached its $6,000 goal in a week. These figures are as reported by the newspaper; it did not provide an independent audit or final accounting.
What the report does—and does not—say about the scooter
The intended equipment was described in terms of the Bakers’ needs: lightweight handling, air travel, and controls adapted for Andy’s left side. PerthNow did not name a manufacturer or model, give technical specifications or confirm the purchase details. The story therefore does not establish which scooter was obtained or provide enough information to treat any particular model as a match.

Richards described the effort as community engagement, saying, “I love the interactions with the community.” Andy said, “I feel less disabled,” and Trudy said, “He has become isolated, so this will make it easier for us to get out again.”
