The fresh twist is an ownership dispute escalating on two fronts: the High Court reportedly wound up a company belonging to Sheffield United’s co-chairmen on 19 August 2026, and the EFL was reported to be investigating allegations about the club’s ownership structure. The court order was against a company, not Sheffield United FC. The former owner, United World, says more than £35m remains unpaid from the 2024 sale; that amount is a claim, not an established finding in the reporting cited here.
What is the fresh twist in the Sheffield United takeover situation?
The development is not a new takeover. It is a dispute over the terms of the previous sale, alongside questions about the current owners’ company structure. The Guardian reported that Sheffield United announced on 22 June 2026 that 1919 Partners LLC was its parent company and at the centre of its ownership structure. The paper also reported an EFL investigation into allegations that the structure had been changed to avoid paying the former owner the full sale price. The alleged motive has not been established as fact. The Guardian’s report.
On 19 August 2026, the High Court ordered the winding up of a company belonging to Sheffield United’s co-chairmen following a petition by United World, the group of former owner Prince Abdullah. The petition concerned United World’s claim that more than £35m remained payable from the sale. The Independent’s report on the court order.
How the dispute developed
- December 2024: COH Sports, an American consortium led by Steven Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy, acquired Sheffield United. The club’s accounts describe the acquisition as completed during the 2024/25 season. Sheffield United’s accounts.
- 22 June 2026: The Guardian reported the club’s announcement that 1919 Partners LLC was its parent company, and reported an EFL inquiry into allegations about the ownership structure and the unpaid sale balance. The Guardian’s report.
- 19 August 2026: The High Court winding-up order against a company belonging to the co-chairmen was reported after United World petitioned over the balance it says remains due. The Independent’s report.
- Through 25 September 2026: A later specialist analysis discussed ongoing ownership, financing and regulatory exposure. It is analysis, not an official regulator ruling. The analysis.
Why is Prince Abdullah claiming more than £35m?
United World says that more than £35m remains payable under the 2024 sale agreement. The reported court petition concerned that claimed balance. The figure is attributed to United World in reporting by The Guardian and The Independent; the available accounts do not establish that the amount has been conclusively determined.

What the court order does—and does not—mean
The reported winding-up order concerned a company belonging to the co-chairmen. It did not wind up Sheffield United Football Club. The distinction matters: an order involving an owner-related company is not, by itself, an order against the club or proof that the club has ceased operating.

The EFL was reported to be investigating allegations related to the ownership-company structure and the claimed unpaid balance. The material available here establishes neither a final EFL or Independent Football Regulator finding nor an imposed points deduction. A sanction should therefore not be described as decided or inevitable. The precise outcome depends on any regulator findings and subsequent action; the later analysis published on 28 September discusses exposure but is not an official ruling. Specialist analysis published 28 September 2026.
