What WalletHub’s $203 figure means—and what it does not
WalletHub says it used its latest consumer-finance data to calculate each state’s median monthly student loan payment per user, then ranked states by that median. A median is the midpoint of the observations in a dataset; it is not an average. The published methodology does not disclose the sample size, observation period, how users were assigned to states, or the detailed definition of a payment record.
As a result, the $203 figure is best read as WalletHub’s state-level consumer-data median. The source does not establish it as the typical Florida borrower’s required payment, a federal loan payment amount, or a state average. The table also cannot show why one state’s median is higher or lower; it does not, by itself, demonstrate the effects of tuition, income, debt balances, or state policy.

How the state ranking differs from national repayment data
National survey findings provide context about whether borrowers are paying and facing difficulty, but they measure different things from WalletHub’s state payment medians. They should not be read as Florida-specific estimates.
- The Federal Reserve’s 2024 household survey found that, as of October 2024, 57% of borrowers with student loans for their own education were required to make monthly payments. It also found that 20% of borrowers reported being behind on payments or in collections in 2024. These are national, self-reported survey results. Federal Reserve, 2024 Survey of Household Economics and Decisionmaking.
- The Federal Reserve’s 2025 household survey, published in 2026, found that 41% of adults required to make student-loan payments had recently experienced payment difficulties; they represented 23% of adults with student-loan debt. Among borrowers required to pay, the share who paid the full required amount in the prior month ranged from 42% for those with family income below $25,000 to 92% for those with income of $100,000 or more. These figures concern difficulty and payment completion, not state-level payment size. Federal Reserve, 2025 Survey of Household Economics and Decisionmaking.
Differences in required-payment status, payment amount, and payment difficulty are not interchangeable. A state median cannot tell an individual whether they owe a payment or can afford it.
