How Farmer Rick Clark Says His No-Till System Saves About $2 Million a Year

Rick Clark says his 7,000-acre Indiana farm saves about $2 million annually by eliminating tillage and most purchased inputs. The figure is his farm-specific estimate, not an audited or universal result.

Rick Clark, a certified-organic farmer in Williamsport, Indiana, estimates that eliminating tillage and most purchased farm inputs saves his operation about $2 million a year. That is Clark’s estimate for his own 7,000-acre farm, reported by Successful Farming in an article updated November 13, 2024—not an audited figure or a savings estimate that can be applied to other farms.

What does the $2 million estimate mean?

Clark attributes the savings to stopping tillage and eliminating most purchased inputs. The report does not give a calculation method, detailed cost accounts, or a controlled comparison with his former system. The figure should therefore be read as his account of annual savings on his farm, not as an independently verified measure of net profit or a forecast for another operation.

The article says Clark’s yields have fallen compared with his earlier conventional yields. He places more emphasis on soil health and return on investment, and says lower purchased-input costs contribute to the higher ROI he seeks. His case does not show that no-till necessarily raises yields or produces the same financial outcome elsewhere.

How does Rick Clark use cover crops?

Clark’s farm grows corn, soybeans, winter wheat, alfalfa, buckwheat, and peas across 7,000 acres, with cover crops on every acre, according to Successful Farming. His approach developed in stages: he first stopped tillage, then added cover crops, and later worked toward eliminating fertilizers and herbicides. The report describes the operation as “organic regenerative stewardship.”

Choose cover crops for the next cash crop

Before corn, Clark uses cereal-grain fields followed by a cover-crop mix that includes legumes intended to provide nitrogen. He delays corn planting until after Mother’s Day so overwintered legumes have time to mature and bloom. He also uses cold-tolerant peas ahead of corn or soybeans, and plants a post-corn “maslin” mix of cereal rye, winter wheat, and barley.

Clark estimates that cold-tolerant peas give him about 45 additional days of cover-crop planting opportunity. Successful Farming also reports that the farm has produced up to 12,000 pounds of cover-crop biomass per acre; that is a reported maximum, not a typical or guaranteed amount.

Use residue and canopy to suppress weeds

Cover-crop residue acts as mulch, while corn planted in 20-inch rows can form a canopy that shades weeds. Clark’s stated goal is for residue to provide 70% of weed suppression and the crop canopy 30%. This is his management target, not a validated recommendation for every farm or field.

Terminate cover crops mechanically

The report describes using a roller crimper or flail chopper to terminate cover crops; sometimes more than one pass is needed. Clark also describes terminating alfalfa with corn as a high-risk tactic that had worked for him three years out of four. He advises farmers new to the approach to test it on a small scale rather than commit a large acreage.

Can no-till eliminate fertilizer and herbicide costs?

Clark says he has eliminated most purchased inputs, but the account does not establish that every fertilizer or herbicide expense has disappeared. In his system, no-till is one part of a broader practice that combines organic production, crop rotation, cover crops, and mechanical termination. The article does not provide an itemized account of inputs still purchased, labor, equipment, seed, or other costs, so it cannot show how each expense changes or what the net savings are for a different farm.

For a farmer assessing the idea, the central financial question is not simply whether tillage or a chemical input can be removed. It is whether the full system—including cover-crop seed, termination, timing, possible extra field passes, and any yield changes—improves that farm’s own returns. Clark’s reported experience is a case study to evaluate, not a transferable budget.

What soil results does Clark report?

Clark reports a 1.5% increase in soil organic matter over 10 years and water infiltration of about 20 inches per hour. Those measurements are attributed to him in Successful Farming; the article does not supply an independent verification or enough measurement detail to compare them reliably with results from other farms.

His stated priorities help explain why he accepts lower yields than he had under conventional practices. As the article quotes him: “My version of success is not based on crop yield.” He instead emphasizes soil health and return on investment. That is his decision framework, not proof that the same trade-off will suit another farmer’s finances or goals.

What other farms can—and cannot—take from the case

The account shows how Clark combines no-till with a diverse rotation, cover crops on every acre, crop-specific planting windows, and mechanical termination. It does not isolate the effect of no-till from those other practices, establish audited savings, or demonstrate that the reported soil measures or financial results will recur on another operation.

  • Transferable as questions to investigate: which cover crops fit the next cash crop, how planting and termination dates affect the rotation, and whether reduced tillage and purchased inputs alter total costs.
  • Not transferable as a promise: the $2 million annual savings estimate, lower-input costs, soil measurements, biomass maximum, or yield trade-off on a farm with different acreage, soils, climate, equipment, and markets.
  • Practical caution: Clark’s own advice on the higher-risk alfalfa-and-corn strategy is to begin on a small scale.
