But the systems and rules are not universal: evidence of plate collection at one casino does not establish that every casino uses automated license plate readers, and a possible face match is an alert for staff—not proof of wrongdoing.
How facial recognition works at a casino
- A camera captures an image. The image may be taken as someone enters or moves through an area covered by surveillance.
- Software compares the face with relevant records. Queensland’s gaming regulation describes a system that recognizes, identifies, and records a facial image, then compares it with biometric information held about excluded people. South Australia’s Consumer and Business Services describes systems that compare entrant images with a barring database.
- A possible match can prompt a response. South Australia says an approved system notifies the gambling provider of a suspected barred person. A match is a lead for operational follow-up, not a finding that the person has broken a rule.
Those sources explain a basic workflow, not a universal casino setup. They do not establish that every camera feed is analyzed in real time, nor do they provide a verified accuracy rate.

How face recognition differs from license plate capture

So, do casinos scan license plates? A casino privacy policy documents plate collection and matching at one operator, but the evidence does not support saying that every casino uses automated license plate readers. “License plate reader” usually suggests automated capture and processing; the documented policy alone does not confirm that technical arrangement.

Potentially, where an operator uses facial recognition and has relevant records against which to compare an image. Queensland and South Australia describe systems focused on identifying people subject to exclusion or barring measures. Crown says its stated purposes also include safety, responsible-gaming operations, and compliance. None of these examples shows that every casino can identify every visitor, or that camera footage is routinely matched against a general identity database.

A suspected match is not proof of identity or misconduct. The South Australian description specifically refers to notification about a suspected barred person; the sources do not establish a universal procedure for what staff must do next.
What happens to face scans and plate data?
Handling depends on the operator and jurisdiction. Crown says most biometric information is deleted within a few seconds and that information it retains is kept securely on its premises. That is Crown’s description of its own practice, not a general casino retention rule.

Queensland’s 2025 regulation sets conditions for facial-recognition use at relevant licensed premises. For gaming premises, it ties the system to identifying excluded people to prevent entry or remaining in violation of an exclusion order or direction. It requires deletion of biometric information that does not identify an excluded person and requires signage. It also prohibits using held information to encourage gambling or linking it with a customer loyalty or rewards program.
Queensland Government guidance says authorized facial-recognition use is limited to identifying people excluded from gaming premises or subject to liquor banning orders; marketing, customer profiling, and gambling incentives are not permitted uses under that law. The guidance calls for prominent signs and recommends avoiding camera placement that inadvertently captures passers-by who are not entering the premises. These legal limits are specific to Queensland.

What to take from a camera match or a privacy notice
- A face match is a screening signal. The sources describe suspected matches and notifications, not a conclusive determination of identity or wrongdoing.
- Look for the operator’s own privacy notice. The documented plate example shows why: a policy can disclose collection and matching without explaining whether capture is automated, what databases are checked, or how long data are retained.
- Check the local rules rather than assuming one standard. Queensland and South Australia describe different regulatory approaches, while Ohio’s cited rule covers general surveillance integrity controls.
- Do not assume every camera system has biometric matching. The sources establish particular operator practices and jurisdictional systems, not a universal industry deployment or performance level.
Queensland’s regulation states: “A licensee who operates a facial recognition technology system under this section must display a sign”. That signage requirement is one condition in the specified legal section, not a description of every casino’s notice obligations.
