If a supplement maker cannot explain what its quality claims mean or how they were verified, treat those claims as unverified. Check the exact product label, look for current independent certification of the finished product, ask the company for specific testing details, and consult a health professional before taking it. If you suspect a product defect or harmful reaction, contact a health professional as appropriate and report it to the FDA.
Why a label or quality claim is not proof
In the United States, the FDA generally does not approve dietary supplements or their labels before they are sold, and it does not test supplements before they reach consumers. Manufacturers and distributors are responsible for ensuring their products comply with applicable requirements. Firms generally are not required to submit the evidence they rely on to substantiate safety to the FDA before or after marketing; a limited exception involves advance safety notifications for certain new dietary ingredients. The FDA explains this framework in its Questions and Answers on Dietary Supplements.

A Supplement Facts panel tells you what the manufacturer declares, not whether a particular bottle has been independently confirmed to match those declarations. It normally lists serving size, servings per container, dietary ingredients and their amounts per serving. For ingredients in a proprietary blend, the blend’s total amount is generally listed, but not the amount of each ingredient within it. The package should also identify the product as a dietary supplement, list other ingredients and net quantity, and name the manufacturer, packer or distributor with a place of business. A domestic address or phone number for serious adverse-event reports is required.
Terms such as “tested,” “pure,” “standardized,” “clinically studied” and “GMP” do not all mean the same thing. In particular, U.S. law does not define “standardization,” so the word alone does not establish consistent composition or quality. FDA-required current good manufacturing practices are intended to help ensure identity, purity, quality, strength and composition, but seeing “GMP” in marketing is not by itself evidence that a specific finished product has passed independent testing.

- IDENTIFY KEY VITAMINS & MINERALS YOU MAY NOT BE PROPERLY ABSORBING. When your body isn’t properly absorbing the key vitamins and minerals from your diet, nutrient imbalances can occur. If they’re left unchecked, symptoms like low energy, brittle nails, dry skin, hair shedding, and fatigue can develop. This test identifies the specific nutrients that may need diet adjustments to support better absorption.
- TESTS 112 VITAMINS, MINERALS & TRACE ELEMENTS. Our nutrition test analyzes your hair sample’s response across Vitamins A, B-Complex, C, D, E, K, Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, Iron, Selenium, Trace Minerals, Essential Amino Acids, plus Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids.
- HOW OUR TESTING WORKS. 1) Register your test online or in the 5Strands app. 2) Collect 10 to 15 strands of hair. 3) Mail your sample to our certified lab using the included prepaid envelope. Once the lab receives it, your results are delivered to your email and mobile dashboard within 4 days. No blood draw, no office visits, or extra fees.
- CLEAR ANSWERS TO MAKE TARGETED DIET ADJUSTMENTS. Your hair analysis report organizes each nutrient into 4 response levels so you know which vitamins or minerals your body may have the most trouble absorbing. Use your results to adjust food choices and supplements to support better absorption and improve energy levels, skin hydration, hair and nail strength, and mental clarity.
- INDEPENDENTLY VALIDATED & DOUBLE-SCAN LAB PROCESS. Backed by third-party research and analyzed twice in a certified U.S. lab for accuracy, 5Strands is trusted by more than 345,000 customers and pets to uncover nutritional imbalances affecting daily performance, skin and hair health, and overall wellbeing.
Check the exact product and what the claim covers
- Record the product details. Note the full product name, manufacturer or distributor, ingredients and amounts, serving size, lot or batch number if shown, and the exact wording of the quality claim. Photograph the label and packaging, and compare them with the company’s product page.
- Ask what was actually checked. A claim about a facility’s manufacturing practices is different from testing of the finished product. Ask whether testing covered identity, potency or amounts, purity, and particular contaminants—and whether it concerned the exact product or batch you are considering.
- Look for specific evidence. Useful details include the test method, who conducted the test, the batch or sample tested, the acceptance criteria and the results. A broad slogan, testimonial or promotional chart does not answer those questions.
- Separate quality from health benefits. A quality certification does not prove that a supplement delivers a claimed health benefit. Assess evidence for the benefit separately and discuss it with a health professional.
The FDA advises consumers to contact a manufacturer when the label does not provide enough information. The agency’s consumer guidance is available at Information for Consumers on Using Dietary Supplements.
Check certification seals against the certifier’s listing
Independent certification is voluntary, and programs differ in what they inspect or test. NIH’s Office of Dietary Supplements identifies ConsumerLab, NSF and USP as organizations that offer quality testing, while cautioning that their approaches vary. It states: “These seals do not guarantee that a product is safe or effective.” See its Frequently Asked Questions.

Do not rely on a logo printed on a package alone. Search the certifier’s own directory for the exact product name and check that its listing is current. Read the program scope: a facility audit, a review of manufacturing practices and testing of a finished product are different forms of evidence.

NSF distinguishes among several programs. Its consumer FAQ describes NSF/ANSI 455 as manufacturing-process and GMP certification involving annual inspections or audits; NSF/ANSI 173 as product certification involving technical review, product testing and contaminant testing; and NSF 306/Certified for Sport as screening for 290+ banned substances, with NSF/ANSI 173 eligibility required. NSF says testing may cover label composition, heavy metals, microorganisms, mycotoxins and pesticides. These program descriptions are not interchangeable: confirm the precise certification and current status in the NSF directory.

This gives you clear directions to begin removing severe intolerance foods, moderate your intake of mid-level triggers, and keep safe foods in rotation to support gut health, digestion, and symptom relief.
- 3RD PARTY STUDIED & DOCTOR RECOMMENDED. 5Strands is the only intolerance and sensitivity test independently validated through third-party research. Every sample is processed in our certified U.S. lab using a double-pass method for accurate results, and our testing has helped over 345,000 people and pets uncover their food intolerances and environmental sensitivities.
What to verify for USP Verified
USP describes facility audits, product testing and ongoing off-the-shelf checks as elements of USP Verified. Check USP’s current official resources for the program’s scope and the product’s participation; a seal should not be taken as a guarantee of safety or effectiveness.
Questions to ask the manufacturer
NIH’s Office of Dietary Supplements recommends asking what information supports product claims; whether the company has safety or efficacy testing on the ingredients; whether it follows good manufacturing practices and has quality controls for identity and contamination; and whether it has received adverse-event reports. Make the questions concrete:
Rank #4
- Easy to use and reliable results
- Suitable for home use
- Accuracy rate up to 99.5%
- Reliable screening for vitamin D deficiency
- Quick results within 15 minutes, no need to send to the laboratory
- What evidence supports the specific quality or health claim on this product?
- What ingredients or finished-product characteristics were tested, and what contaminants were included?
- Who performed the testing, what method was used, and which product or batch was tested?
- What criteria determine whether a result passes?
- Does the certification apply to this finished product, only to a facility, or to an ingredient supplier?
- Has the company received adverse-event reports about the product, and how does it handle them?
A company may not provide every document or a particular certificate format to consumers. The important distinction is whether it can explain what its claim means and what evidence supports it; a vague answer does not verify the claim.
What to do if the company cannot substantiate its claims
If the answer remains vague or the company will not explain what its testing covers, do not treat the claim as verified. Pause before buying or using the product. Discuss the ingredient and product with a doctor, pharmacist or dietitian, especially if you take medication, manage a health condition, are preparing for surgery, or are pregnant or considering use during pregnancy. Supplements can have risks and interact with medicines; FDA recommends discussing them with a health professional.

If your concern is the actual contents of a particular product, FDA says consumers may contact the manufacturer or a commercial laboratory for analysis. A result applies to the sample and analytes tested; it cannot establish every quality or health claim about the product.
How to recognize an FDA disclaimer—and what it means
Some structure/function and related claims must carry a disclaimer stating that the claim has not been evaluated by the FDA. The disclaimer is not FDA approval or independent validation. Firms must have substantiation that covered claims are truthful and not misleading, but those claim categories do not require FDA evaluation before appearing on a label. A claim that a product treats, prevents or cures a disease can cause it to meet the definition of a drug.
What to do about a reaction or apparent defect
If you suspect a harmful reaction, seek medical advice promptly. Report the event through the FDA’s Safety Reporting Portal. FDA also encourages consumers to report apparent product problems, such as foreign objects or other quality defects. Keep the package, lot number, receipt if available, and photographs; these details can help identify the product involved.
