Bitcoin is the native asset of a peer-to-peer payment network with protocol-defined issuance. DeFi tokens are linked to particular applications or protocols, and their uses and holder rights vary from token to token. Both can be highly volatile; DeFi tokens also expose holders more directly to risks such as smart-contract, oracle, governance, and liquidity-pool failures.
The useful comparison is not “Bitcoin versus one kind of DeFi token.” It is Bitcoin’s network and supply model versus the specific design, utility, and risks of each token.

What is the difference between Bitcoin and a DeFi token?
Bitcoin is the asset native to the Bitcoin network. Transactions are recorded on a public blockchain, and issuance follows the network’s protocol. A SEC-filed issuer annual report describes Bitcoin’s market value as determined by supply and demand in digital-asset markets and private transactions.
DeFi, short for decentralized finance, refers to financial applications built on public blockchains. Smart contracts can hold and move funds under programmed conditions to support activities such as peer-to-peer lending, borrowing, and trading. A DeFi token may be used in an application or provide governance rights, but there is no single standard token model.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
That distinction matters: an application’s usefulness does not by itself establish that its token has meaningful utility, a claim on revenue, or ownership of protocol assets. Those rights must be verified for the individual token.

What drives Bitcoin’s price?
Bitcoin’s price is formed by buyers and sellers. Its protocol-defined issuance shapes the supply side, but a limited designed supply does not guarantee that demand will rise or that the price will appreciate. The Bitcoin network’s designed maximum supply is 21 million units, according to a 2026 Hashdex filing.

Demand and the ability to trade can change with user and investor interest, market liquidity, trading access, regulation, and confidence in the network. Market conditions can also be affected by large holders, miner economics, trading-venue disruptions, or legal changes, as described in SEC-filed materials. These are potential influences, not a reliable recipe for predicting price movements.
Bitcoin’s commonly cited uses include payment and a store-of-value narrative. Those descriptions identify possible purposes, not proof of how widely people use it or how it will perform as an investment.

What gives a DeFi token value?
Start with the specific token, not the popularity of the application. Determine whether it is used by the application, provides governance rights, or has another documented role. Then ask how that role could create demand for the token and what can limit its usefulness. Token design and holder rights differ across protocols, so a conclusion about one token should not be generalized to the category.
Governance is not automatically a claim on revenue
A governance token may let holders vote on protocol decisions, but voting rights do not necessarily give holders a share of protocol revenue or assets. Uniswap Developers describe UNI as an ERC-20 governance token used in Uniswap governance; that example establishes UNI’s documented role, not a general rule for DeFi tokens.

Governance itself can carry risk. Concentrated voting power or a vulnerable process can make harmful proposals possible, so the existence of a vote is not proof that a protocol is protected.

Demand may be influenced by protocol use, the token’s perceived usefulness, trading liquidity, incentives, and confidence in the protocol. An exploit, governance dispute, or oracle failure can undermine confidence or disrupt utility. These mechanisms explain possible price influences; they do not establish a universal relationship between application activity and token price.

How the risks differ
Bitcoin: market, custody, and network risks
- Volatility and demand uncertainty. Market price can change with supply and demand, liquidity, investor behavior, competition, and confidence. Designed scarcity does not prevent losses.
- Wallet and custody exposure. Direct self-custody requires managing the credentials and wallet access needed to reach assets. Loss or compromise can result in loss of access or funds. A hardware wallet is one key-management tool, not a guarantee against loss.
- Governance and development constraints. Bitcoin has no central decision-making body; voluntary consensus and development can make changes difficult.
- Regulation and trading access. Rules, venue liquidity, and operational problems may affect availability and price. These conditions vary by jurisdiction and can change.
DeFi tokens: protocol and token-design risks
- Smart-contract vulnerabilities. A bug or faulty upgrade or governance mechanism can put funds or protocol operations at risk. Publicly viewable code can still contain exploitable flaws; transparency is not the same as safety.
- Oracle failures or manipulation. Smart contracts cannot automatically access off-chain facts. If an oracle supplying price information is manipulated or unavailable, a lending or other application may make incorrect decisions.
- Governance attacks. Concentrated voting power or poorly designed decision processes may allow malicious proposals. A governance vote is not automatically a safeguard.
- Liquidity-pool losses. Uniswap Labs identifies impermanent loss, market volatility, out-of-range positions, contract vulnerabilities, and untrusted token teams as risks for liquidity providers. Fees do not guarantee compensation for those risks.
- Token-specific weaknesses. A protocol may function while its associated token has limited utility or weak holder rights. Assess the token’s documented role and governance design rather than inferring value from an application’s popularity.
Bitcoin and DeFi tokens both remain exposed to market and regulatory risks. Holding either through a third-party venue or directly introduces different operational considerations; direct self-custody, in particular, adds wallet and key-management exposure.
How to assess a specific token before comparing it with Bitcoin
- Identify the token’s documented role. Read the protocol’s own token and governance materials. Do not assume every DeFi token is used for governance or has the same rights.
- Separate protocol activity from token-holder benefit. Check whether the token’s role is connected to application use, and whether holders have voting rights, revenue rights, or rights to assets. Do not infer a financial claim from governance participation.
- Examine who can change the protocol. Understand what holders can vote on, how decisions are made, and whether voting power or upgrade controls are concentrated.
- Consider the application’s failure modes. For a lending or trading application, consider its smart contracts and any dependence on oracles or liquidity pools. Public code alone does not establish that these systems are safe.
- Compare the risks you would actually bear. Include market volatility and access risks for either asset, plus the specific custody, protocol, and token-design risks relevant to how you plan to hold or use it.
What the available figures do—and do not—show
A SEC-filed Bitcoin trust annual report states that the 100 largest Bitcoin wallets held approximately 15% of Bitcoin in circulation as of December 31, 2025. The filing cautions that wallet clustering means addresses do not necessarily correspond one-to-one with owners. This is a dated observation about wallet addresses, not a current live measure of ownership concentration.
Figures such as a designed maximum supply or a dated wallet count describe particular features at a particular point or under a particular definition. They do not establish future demand, price performance, or the safety of holding an asset.
Conclusion
Bitcoin and DeFi tokens are not interchangeable exposures. Bitcoin’s price discussion centers on a single network asset, protocol-defined issuance, and market supply and demand. For a DeFi token, the first question is what that specific token does and what rights it gives; its price can also be affected by the condition and risks of the associated protocol. Neither design eliminates the possibility of substantial loss.
This is an educational comparison, not individualized investment advice or a price prediction. Legal treatment and trading access depend on jurisdiction and may change.
