A wallet selects unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs), creates a new transaction with payment and change outputs, and signs the transaction with a private key. The network verifies that authorization, miners include the transaction in a block, and the new outputs become spendable by their recipients.
What a Bitcoin transaction actually transfers
Bitcoin’s ledger records transaction outputs, not ordinary account balances. Every output assigns a specific amount of bitcoin to spending conditions. Until an output is spent, it is an unspent transaction output, or UTXO. A wallet’s displayed balance is the total value of UTXOs that its keys can spend.

Each output can be spent only once. When a transaction spends an output, that old output is consumed and new outputs are created. This is why a wallet balance can be made up of several separate pieces, just as cash in a drawer might consist of several notes and coins.
Alice pays Bob: the complete transaction flow
1. Alice’s wallet selects spendable UTXOs
Suppose Alice wants to send Bob 0.30 BTC. Her wallet may control several UTXOs whose combined value is greater than 0.30 BTC. It selects one or more of them as inputs. An input does not contain coins in isolation; it points to a particular earlier transaction and the index of the output being spent.

2. Bob provides a receiving address
Bob gives Alice a Bitcoin address generated by his wallet. The address is a receiving identifier that represents spending conditions. It is not a wallet account, a quantity of bitcoin, or a private key. Alice’s wallet uses the address to construct an output that Bob’s wallet can later unlock.
3. Alice creates payment and change outputs
The transaction includes an output paying Bob 0.30 BTC. If Alice’s selected inputs total 1.00 BTC, the wallet normally creates a second output returning most of the remainder to an address controlled by Alice. That is the change output. For example, with 1.00 BTC of inputs, a 0.30 BTC payment and a 0.01 BTC fee, the change output would be 0.69 BTC.
Change is not a refund sent by the network. It is a new output in the same transaction, and Alice’s wallet must track it as a future UTXO.

For each input, Alice’s wallet supplies data that satisfies the earlier output’s spending conditions. In the introductory pay-to-public-key-hash (P2PKH) model, this generally includes a digital signature and the corresponding public key. The signature proves control of the private key associated with that output without disclosing the private key itself.
5. The wallet broadcasts the transaction
Alice’s wallet sends the signed transaction to Bitcoin peers. Nodes check that the referenced outputs exist, have not already been spent, and that the signatures and other rules are valid. A transaction that fails validation is not accepted into the node’s pool for relay.
6. A miner includes it in a block
Valid transactions can wait in the network’s transaction pool until a miner includes them in a block. Inclusion gives the transaction its first confirmation. Additional blocks provide additional confirmations. The waiting time varies, so a wallet’s estimate is not a guarantee or a universal current fee prediction.

7. The old UTXOs disappear and new ones become spendable
After confirmation, Alice can no longer spend the inputs she used. Bob’s payment output and Alice’s change output are separate UTXOs. Bob’s wallet recognizes the payment as spendable according to its policy, which may require one or more confirmations before treating it as final for a particular use.
Inputs, outputs, and fees in the transaction data

A transaction can have multiple inputs and multiple outputs. The arithmetic is always the same: sum of inputs − sum of outputs = fee. If a wallet selects several small UTXOs, the transaction may need several inputs. If it pays several recipients, it can create several payment outputs. The fee is not a separate output with a destination address; it is the difference left over after outputs are specified.
What a Bitcoin address is—and is not
An address is a compact way to communicate where a payment should be assigned. It encodes or represents spending conditions, allowing a sender’s wallet to create the correct output script. The address itself does not hold bitcoin and cannot authorize a spend.
In the documented P2PKH teaching example, a wallet derives a public key from a private key, hashes the public key, and encodes that hash in a familiar Base58 address. That encoding includes a version number, the hash, and a checksum. This is one address and script form, not a description of every Bitcoin address. Other forms use different scripts, encodings, and wallet compatibility rules.
When you share an address, you are sharing a receiving identifier. Anyone can use it to send bitcoin to the associated spending conditions. You should not describe it as your “public key” unless you have verified that a particular technical context uses those terms interchangeably; an address is normally derived from or represents key-related conditions rather than being the key itself.
Private keys, public keys, and signatures
Private key
A private key is secret authorization material. The developer documentation describes a secp256k1 private key as 256-bit random data. A wallet generates and stores this secret, often protecting it behind a recovery phrase or other backup mechanism. Anyone who obtains the relevant private key or recovery phrase may be able to spend the associated bitcoin.

Bitcoin.org states: “Private keys must never be revealed as they allow you to spend bitcoins for their respective Bitcoin wallet.” Treat a private key, seed, or recovery phrase as a bearer authorization: do not paste it into a website, send it to support, or photograph it for convenience.
Public key
The public key is mathematically derived from the private key and is safe to provide in contexts where the protocol expects it. In the P2PKH example, the public key is hashed before being represented in an address. Revealing a public key does not reveal the private key.
Digital signature
When spending a UTXO, the wallet creates a signature using the private key and the transaction data covered by the applicable signature rules. Nodes verify that signature with the public key. A valid signature shows that the spender controls the required private key without exposing it.

A signature is not encryption. It does not hide the transaction’s amount, inputs, outputs, or other publicly recorded details. Its role here is authorization and protection of the signed transaction data.
Why your balance is not “stored at” one address
Wallet software scans the blockchain for UTXOs that satisfy the spending conditions controlled by its keys. It then adds their values to display a balance. One wallet can control UTXOs associated with many addresses, and one address can have a history of multiple incoming and outgoing transactions.
Because each UTXO is consumed in full when selected, a payment often creates change even when the wallet shows a single total balance. Wallet coin-selection algorithms decide which UTXOs to use, balancing factors such as transaction size, future consolidation, and privacy. The underlying rule remains that every selected output is spent once and any unused value must appear as change or as part of the fee.

Confirmation, finality, and what the network can see
Before confirmation, a transaction has been broadcast but is not yet embedded in a block. Nodes and miners can reject it if it violates consensus or relay rules. Once a block includes it, the transaction has one confirmation; later blocks increase that count.

Bitcoin.org describes it this way: “All Bitcoin transactions are public, traceable, and permanently stored in the Bitcoin network.” The visible record includes addresses or scripts, amounts, and links between spent outputs and new outputs. Real-world identity may not be written directly into the transaction, but activity can often be linked through address reuse, payment records, exchange information, or other data.
Using a fresh receiving address for each receipt where practical can reduce obvious links. It does not make transactions anonymous, and it does not erase the history of an address that has already been used.

Self-custody gives you control and responsibility. Bitcoin.org summarizes that trade-off: “When you hold your own private keys, you control your bitcoin—but you are also responsible for keeping it secure.” A recovery phrase can restore a wallet, so anyone who obtains it may access the corresponding bitcoin.
Address and script differences matter
P2PKH is useful for learning the basic flow because it clearly shows a public-key hash, a signature, and a public key satisfying a spending condition. It is not the only transaction form. Other address and script types commit to different conditions and may use different encodings or reveal different information when spent.

Before sending, verify that the sender and recipient wallets support the address format being used. A wallet may display a familiar-looking string while implementing a different script type, and compatibility depends on the software involved. The invariant is that the output commits bitcoin to a condition; the recipient must possess the data required to satisfy that condition later.

Common questions and mistakes
Can someone spend my bitcoin with my public address?
No. An address is for receiving and viewing activity associated with its outputs. Spending requires satisfying the output’s conditions, normally with the private key or other authorized data. Keep in mind that a compromised recovery phrase or private key is sufficient for an attacker; a public address is not.
Does sending bitcoin destroy the money and recreate it?
The protocol consumes the selected old outputs and creates new outputs. The value is represented by the new UTXOs, not by a moving object or an account-balance transfer.
Why did I receive a payment at a different address than the one I gave out?
Wallets commonly generate fresh change addresses. That output still belongs to the same wallet if the wallet controls the corresponding key material. Check the wallet’s transaction details rather than assuming every address it uses is a separate account.

A signature covers the transaction data under the applicable rules. Changing covered inputs, outputs, or amounts generally invalidates the signature. The network validates the resulting transaction rather than trusting a label or payment memo.
Practical safety checklist
- Back up the recovery phrase or private keys using the wallet’s documented method.
- Never enter secret recovery data into a website or send it to a person claiming to provide support.
- Check the destination address on the device or wallet screen before approving a payment.
- Use a new receiving address when practical, especially when separating payment histories matters.
- Remember that a broadcast transaction is public and may be difficult or impossible to reverse once confirmed.
- For large payments, make a small test transaction only when the fee and operational risks are acceptable, then verify the recipient’s receipt.
Understanding UTXOs, addresses, keys, signatures, outputs, and fees turns the wallet interface into a readable description of what Bitcoin is doing: consuming specific prior outputs, proving authorization, and creating new spendable conditions.
