For travel, foreign websites, subscriptions or overseas cash withdrawals, the decisive question is whether your particular Jaywan card is co-badged with Visa, Mastercard or another international network. A Jaywan logo alone does not guarantee international acceptance. Your issuing bank or licensed financial institution controls eligibility, fees, account conditions and many usage settings, so compare the exact product rather than choosing by network name.
This guide explains what the schemes do, how mono-badge and co-badged cards differ, where acceptance is established, which costs remain issuer-specific and how to choose a card for your actual spending pattern.

What Jaywan is—and what Visa and Mastercard are
Jaywan is the UAE’s domestic payment-card scheme, operated by Al Etihad Payments (AEP), a subsidiary of the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE). It is a payment network in its own right, not a renamed Visa or Mastercard product. The scheme was created for UAE-issued cards and domestic payment infrastructure.
Visa and Mastercard are international payment networks. A bank can issue a card carrying one of those brands on its own, or combine an international network with Jaywan on the same physical card. The bank or licensed financial institution remains the customer’s contracting provider: it opens the account, issues the card, sets eligibility rules and publishes the tariff.

- Gift Cards are shipped active and ready for use.
- This card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Funds do not expire. If available funds remain on your card after the valid thru date has passed, please call customer service for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout. No fees after purchase.
- To access your card information safely, type the complete website address shown on your Gift Card (MyGift.GiftCardMall.com) directly into your browser's address bar. Don't use search engines or shortened versions of the website address, as these may lead you to fake or fraudulent sites. Do not provide any Gift Card details (example: Card Number) to someone you do not know or trust. If you believe you've reached an illegitimate website, contact cardholder service at 1-888-524-1283. Be cautious of phishing sites, there are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
- To report your Lost or Stolen Physical Visa Card, call Customer Service 24/7 at 1 (888) 524-1283 to cancel your Gift Card as soon as you can. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
- Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.
That distinction matters because two debit cards from the same bank can have different network routes, foreign-use settings and fees. The logo on the front and back of the actual card, together with the issuer’s terms, tells you more than the name of the scheme in a press release.
Jaywan, Visa and Mastercard compared
| Decision point | Jaywan | Visa or Mastercard branding | What to verify before applying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary role | UAE domestic card scheme | International payment network that may be issued alone or alongside another scheme | Which logos appear on the exact card |
| Typical domestic use | Designed for UAE transactions through ATM, point-of-sale and e-commerce channels | Can also be used domestically where the merchant accepts that network | Local merchant and ATM acceptance, plus issuer restrictions |
| Use outside the UAE | A mono-badge card is described for local and GCC use; international use is associated with co-badging | International network route, subject to merchant acceptance and issuer controls | Whether the card is co-badged, destination acceptance and foreign-use settings |
| Online payments | Scheme materials include e-commerce; named integrations do not prove every website accepts it | Depends on the checkout’s supported network and the issuer’s online controls | Support for the exact website, recurring billing and 3-D Secure or other verification prompts |
| Fees and benefits | No single consumer fee schedule applies to every issuer | Also determined mainly by the issuing bank and account | Issuance, replacement, maintenance, ATM, foreign-exchange and international-transaction charges |
| Data infrastructure | CBUAE’s 2024 annual report describes processing and storage of payment-related data within the UAE | Network infrastructure distinction varies by product and transaction route | Do not treat localization alone as a guarantee of stronger privacy, fraud performance or security |
Mono-badge and co-badged Jaywan cards
Mono-badge Jaywan
A mono-badge card carries Jaywan as its payment scheme without an additional international network logo. AEP describes these cards for local and GCC usage. That makes them potentially suitable for rent, groceries, fuel, utilities, domestic shopping and other UAE spending, but you should not assume they will work for a foreign hotel deposit, an overseas app store or an international subscription.
Co-badged Jaywan
A co-badged card carries Jaywan plus an international network. AEP has announced partnerships involving Discover, Mastercard, Visa and UnionPay. Visa separately announced a Jaywan–Visa co-badging agreement, and Mastercard announced its Jaywan–Mastercard collaboration. These agreements establish the ability to create products using those routes; they do not mean every issuing institution offers every combination.
Look for the international logo on the physical card or in the bank’s product description. Then check the issuer’s terms for overseas point-of-sale payments, online transactions, cash withdrawals, foreign-currency conversion, card-present verification and the ability to switch international usage on or off in the banking app.
When Jaywan became available to consumers
On 20 July 2026, AEP announced the commencement of nationwide Jaywan issuance through banks, licensed financial institutions and exchange houses. That announcement marked a consumer-availability milestone, but it did not create identical products at every institution.

First Abu Dhabi Bank announced a Jaywan debit card on 20 July 2026. Dubai Islamic Bank announced a launch on 27 July 2026. These dated examples show that issuance had moved into the retail market; they are not a complete issuer list and do not establish identical eligibility, minimum-balance rules or charges.
Before opening an account, confirm that the institution currently issues the card to your customer category. Residency, age, salary-transfer requirements, minimum balances and account approval remain issuer decisions.

Where a Jaywan card is intended to work
ATMs and domestic point of sale
AEP’s scheme description lists ATMs and point-of-sale terminals among Jaywan’s payment channels. CBUAE’s UAESWITCH information explains that the domestic ATM network interconnects banks and allows customers to use other banks’ ATM and POS facilities interchangeably. That describes domestic infrastructure, not a promise that every card will work at every terminal or that every transaction is fee-free.
If a payment fails, check whether the card is activated, whether domestic usage is enabled, whether the account has sufficient available balance and whether the merchant terminal supports the card’s scheme. A bank may also apply daily purchase, cash-withdrawal or contactless limits.
GCC use
AEP describes mono-badge Jaywan cards as intended for local and GCC usage. “GCC” should not be read as worldwide acceptance: before travelling, ask the issuer for the countries and transaction types covered, the applicable foreign-exchange rate and any cross-border surcharge.

E-commerce
AEP says Jaywan cards are intended to support e-commerce. Mastercard’s 9 September 2026 announcement gives a specific example: Jaywan transactions became enabled through noon payments’ digital-payments ecosystem via Mastercard Gateway. This confirms a named online integration, not universal acceptance across UAE websites or international checkouts.
For an important website, subscription or government portal, test the exact checkout or ask both the merchant and your bank. Confirm support for recurring payments, refunds, digital-wallet tokenization and any one-time-password or 3-D Secure step. A card can be valid for in-store purchases yet be declined online because the merchant’s acquirer, the issuer’s risk controls or the card’s e-commerce setting differs.
International payments and travel
If you routinely pay outside the UAE, start by identifying the network on the card you will actually receive. A mono-badge Jaywan product should not be treated as an international card merely because AEP has partnerships with international networks. A co-badged Jaywan card may provide an international route, but acceptance still depends on the merchant, country, transaction type and issuer controls.
Ask the issuer these questions before travelling:
- Is the card co-badged, and which international network is on it?
- Are overseas point-of-sale, online and ATM transactions enabled by default?
- What foreign-exchange markup, cross-border fee and cash-withdrawal fee apply?
- Are there country, merchant-category or daily limits?
- How are exchange rates determined, and when is the UAE-dirham amount posted?
- Can the bank freeze, unfreeze or geographically restrict the card in its app?
- Will hotels, car-rental companies and unattended terminals accept the card for deposits or pre-authorizations?
Carry a second payment method for travel. A declined transaction can result from an offline terminal, a merchant’s network choice, a fraud-control block or a temporary connectivity problem rather than a defect in the card.
Online acceptance: how to verify it instead of guessing
- Identify the exact card route. Read the logos on the card and the issuer’s product page. Record whether it is Jaywan only or Jaywan plus an international network.
- Check the merchant’s payment marks. A checkout that displays only certain network logos may reject a card from another route, even if the card is otherwise valid.
- Confirm recurring-payment support. Streaming, software, insurance and app subscriptions can use merchant-initiated or recurring transactions that have different issuer controls.
- Complete a small test payment. Use a low-value transaction when practical, then verify the authorization and final posted amount in your banking app.
- Ask about refunds and reversals. Confirm how long a canceled authorization or merchant refund normally takes and which party handles a dispute.
- Keep an alternative. For a critical flight, accommodation or government service, do not rely on an untested network at the deadline.
Fees, eligibility and benefits: why the issuer matters more than the logo
The official material available for Jaywan does not establish a uniform fee schedule across all banks, licensed financial institutions or exchange houses. It also does not provide a like-for-like national comparison with Visa- or Mastercard-branded debit cards. Therefore, claims that Jaywan is automatically cheaper, safer or more rewarding are not supported.

Compare the account and card tariff for the exact product. The relevant items include:
- Account-opening and minimum-balance or salary-transfer conditions
- Annual, monthly or bundle charges for the account and card
- Initial issuance, replacement, damaged-card and expedited-delivery fees
- Cash-withdrawal charges at the issuer’s and other banks’ ATMs
- Foreign-currency markup, international-transaction fees and exchange-rate treatment
- Online, contactless, wallet-token or card-not-present restrictions
- Daily purchase and withdrawal limits
- Rewards, discounts, lounge access or other benefits, if any
- Customer-service channels and dispute procedures
Ask for the current schedule of charges and the account’s key terms before applying. Promotional waivers can expire, and a low card fee may be offset by a balance requirement or a charge elsewhere in the account.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical choice framework
Choose a Jaywan-focused product when
- Most spending occurs inside the UAE.
- You value a domestic scheme designed around UAE payment infrastructure.
- The issuer’s account conditions and local ATM/POS arrangements suit you.
- You have another payment method for foreign websites and travel, or your card is explicitly co-badged for those uses.
Prioritize a co-badged Jaywan card when
- You want one account for routine UAE spending and occasional international use.
- The card clearly displays an international network and the issuer confirms overseas and online support.
- The foreign-exchange and cross-border charges are acceptable for your travel pattern.
Keep or select a Visa or Mastercard debit card when
- You frequently pay merchants, websites or subscription services that explicitly support that network.
- You need predictable international acceptance and the issuer’s foreign-use terms are clear.
- Your existing card has limits, dispute support or travel features that a Jaywan-only product does not provide.
You do not have to choose only one scheme. Many people can use a domestic-focused card for UAE spending and retain an international card as a travel or online backup, provided they can manage the accounts and charges.
Checklist before opening or switching an account
- Request the exact product name and a picture or written description of the card’s network logos.
- Ask whether it is mono-badge or co-badged and identify every network shown.
- Obtain the latest schedule of charges, including ATM, replacement, foreign-exchange and international fees.
- Confirm eligibility, minimum balance, salary-transfer and residency requirements.
- Ask which countries, merchants, websites, wallets and recurring-payment types are supported.
- Check daily purchase, ATM and contactless limits and the process for changing them.
- Verify how fraud alerts, card freezes, disputes and refunds are handled.
- Test a low-value domestic transaction and, if relevant, a low-value online payment before depending on the card.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every Jaywan card works abroad
International use is associated with co-badging, while mono-badge cards are described for local and GCC use. Inspect the actual card and issuer terms.

Treating a partnership announcement as a product guarantee
AEP’s partnerships with Discover, Mastercard, Visa and UnionPay show that co-badged products can be developed. They do not prove that every bank offers every variant or that every customer qualifies.

Confusing scheme capability with merchant acceptance
Jaywan’s stated e-commerce capability and the named noon payments integration do not establish acceptance at every website. Verify important merchants individually.
Comparing logos instead of total cost
Network branding does not determine your complete account price. Read the issuer’s tariff, including conditions that can make a nominally free card expensive to maintain.
Using localization as a security ranking
CBUAE’s 2024 annual report describes Jaywan as enabling payment-related data to be processed and stored within the UAE. That is an infrastructure characteristic, not evidence of superior fraud rates, privacy outcomes or security for every transaction.

Al Etihad Payments reported that the UnionPay network associated with a Jaywan–UnionPay prepaid-card announcement reaches more than 180 countries. That is a coverage statement for that network and announcement; it is not a guarantee that every Jaywan card works in all those countries.
No directly comparable official statistic establishes Jaywan’s acceptance rate, debit-card fees, fraud outcomes or performance against Visa or Mastercard. A responsible choice therefore rests on the specific issuer’s terms and your use case, not on an unsupported network-wide ranking.
Bottom line: match the card to the job
For predominantly UAE spending, a Jaywan card can meet everyday needs when the issuing account offers convenient ATM, point-of-sale and online access at acceptable cost. For travel, foreign websites or subscriptions, choose a card that explicitly carries an international network and confirm its fees and acceptance before relying on it. Keep a second method for high-stakes or overseas payments.
The correct comparison is not “Jaywan versus Visa versus Mastercard” in the abstract. It is the exact card, issued by the exact institution, with its network logos, account conditions, transaction limits and current tariff.
