Canada’s commercial capture fisheries landed about C$4.10 billion worth of fish and seafood in 2024. That is the clearest headline figure for fishing itself. In the same year, aquaculture production was valued at about C$1.36 billion, while seafood preparation and packaging generated about C$7.79 billion in revenue—related parts of the seafood economy, but different measures. Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s 2025 fast-facts publication is the latest broad national snapshot located, and its figures cover 2024.
What does “the fishing industry” include?
The answer depends on whether “fishing” means catching wild fish, or the broader chain that also farms and processes seafood. Fisheries and Oceans Canada reports those activities separately, so their figures should not be treated as interchangeable or added together as though they were GDP.
- Commercial capture fisheries: the value of fish landed from commercial sea and freshwater fisheries.
- Aquaculture: the value of farmed seafood production.
- Seafood preparation and packaging: manufacturing revenue from processing seafood products.
For a narrower statistical definition, Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada’s NAICS 11411 category covers establishments primarily engaged in catching or taking finfish, shellfish and other marine animals from natural habitats. It excludes aquaculture (NAICS 112510) and seafood preparation and packaging (NAICS 311710). See the NAICS 11411 definition.

These are the principal-statistics figures in Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s 2025 publication, reporting 2024. Harvester and crew employment is based on Statistics Canada’s input-output model and custom data tabulations. The three employment categories refer to distinct parts of the industry.

Why the figures are not one industry-size total
Landings value, farm-output value and processing revenue measure different stages and types of activity. Seafood can pass through more than one stage, so adding the figures risks counting related economic activity more than once. Processing revenue is not the same as value added, and none of these three figures is a standalone GDP total for the entire seafood chain.
DFO’s 2024 marine-economy table instead estimates GDP effects separately for commercial fishing, fish processing and aquaculture. These modeled effects distinguish activity within a sector from supplier activity and spending generated by income:

Direct effects arise from output in the marine industry itself; indirect effects reflect the input purchases needed to support that output; induced effects reflect spending of personal income generated by direct and indirect activity. These modeled categories are not sales or landed values. DFO does not provide a single, clearly bounded GDP total matching all the output and revenue measures above.
How important is fishing to Canada’s economy?
DFO estimates that the entire marine economy accounted for approximately 2% of Canada’s total GDP in 2024. That scope is broader than commercial fishing: the figure should not be described as fishing’s share of GDP.

Where Canada’s capture-fisheries value comes from
Atlantic Canada had the largest share of capture-landings value in DFO’s 2024 regional table. That table records C$3.627 billion for Atlantic Canada, C$385.230 million for the Pacific region and C$84.005 million inland. It lists 13,991 registered Atlantic fishing vessels, 1,932 Pacific vessels and 150 inland vessels; the inland count covers Ontario’s Great Lakes only.
Shellfish accounted for C$3.511 billion of the C$4.009 billion in commercial seafisheries value reported in the species table. Atlantic shellfish alone represented C$3.283 billion. The regional table’s combined sea and freshwater landings value is C$4.013 billion, while the principal-statistics table gives C$4.097 billion. Because the publication’s tables differ, the figures above retain their table-specific context rather than combining their subtotals.

Aquaculture and seafood trade
DFO’s regional aquaculture table reports 160,318 metric tonnes of production and 615 establishments in 2024. Salmon led the listed products by value, with 88,068 tonnes valued at C$888.310 million. The table also reports 20,398 tonnes of mussels valued at C$41.351 million and 15,497 tonnes of oysters valued at C$75.686 million.
On its national principal-statistics basis, DFO reports 2024 fish and seafood exports of C$8.469 billion, imports of C$5.263 billion and a trade balance of C$3.206 billion. Its species trade table gives a different 2024 export subtotal—C$8.149 billion—so these series should not be mixed. In that species table, lobster exports were C$2.971 billion and snow and queen crab exports were C$1.249 billion.
