Holiday tips are optional thank-yous, not a required bill. Start with a household budget, prioritize people who provide recurring help, and check workplace rules before giving cash or a gift. Keep charitable donations separate: gifts to individuals are not deductible charitable contributions, and federal deduction rules depend on the tax year and recipient.
Who should I tip for the holidays?
There is no universal list of people you must tip. Consider the people who regularly make your year easier, such as in-home caregivers, housekeepers, babysitters, childcare providers, pet-care workers, personal-service providers, or building staff. Whether a holiday thank-you makes sense depends on your relationship and the service you actually receive.

Emily Post’s Holiday Tipping Guide offers category-specific amount and gift suggestions. Treat them as etiquette guidance, not mandatory minimums. Consider how often and how long the person has helped you, the responsibility or availability involved, service quality, local custom, and what you can afford.

How much should I tip a housekeeper, babysitter, or building staff member?
Choose a total household budget first, then divide it among recipients. The right amount varies with the working relationship, frequency and duration of service, local norms, and your finances; a suggested amount in an etiquette guide is not an obligation.

- Housekeeper or in-home caregiver: Consider the length and regularity of the relationship and the work involved.
- Babysitter or childcare provider: Consider how frequently they care for your children and the nature of that arrangement.
- Building staff or other regular helpers: Consider how much they assist you, whether they are permitted to accept gifts, and local practice.
If cash is not affordable or appropriate, a modest gift, card, or sincere note can express thanks. The amount should fit your budget; do not borrow or strain essential expenses to meet an etiquette suggestion.
Do I tip my mail carrier or delivery worker?
Check the worker’s current employer rules before offering cash, a gift card, or another gift. USPS employees are subject to ethics rules, and USPS publicized a 2025 holiday ethics guide. Because rules can depend on the employee’s role and the applicable policy, consult the current guidance rather than assuming a postal worker may accept a particular gift. See the USPS 2025 holiday ethics guide announcement and applicable USPS ethics materials.

For private package delivery workers, ask the company or employer what is allowed; do not assume cash or gift cards are permitted. If the rules limit gifts, choose an expressly allowed gesture, arrange a group thank-you if appropriate, or give nothing. A recipient’s employer policy takes precedence over etiquette customs.

Do not assume a teacher, school employee, public employee, or agency worker may accept cash or a gift card. Policies vary by school, employer, and role. Ask the school or employer before preparing a gift. Emily Post’s guidance on holiday tips versus holiday gifts also notes that workplace restrictions can matter.

How should I give a holiday tip or gift?
- Set your budget. Decide the total you can comfortably spend before choosing individual amounts.
- Check the rules. Ask the relevant school, employer, agency, building manager, or recipient whether a tip or gift is acceptable and what forms are allowed.
- Choose an appropriate thank-you. Consider cash only when permitted; otherwise, choose an allowed gift, card, or note.
- Make the appreciation clear. Include a short personal note with a tip or gift. Emily Post recommends a card, and it need not be elaborate.
Cash tips are voluntary discretionary payments under IRS tip guidance. An automatic service charge is different from an additional voluntary tip; the charge is not itself a discretionary tip. See the IRS guidance on tip recordkeeping and reporting.

Are holiday charitable donations tax deductible?
A gift to an individual—including money given through a personal fundraiser—is not a deductible charitable contribution. For a potential federal charitable deduction, give to an eligible organization and follow the applicable rules. You can check an organization’s status using the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search. A recipient’s presence in a fundraising campaign does not by itself make a personal gift deductible.
For U.S. federal taxes, the usual rule is that taxpayers must itemize deductions to claim charitable contributions. The IRS says that, beginning with tax year 2026, certain qualified cash contributions may be deductible by taxpayers who do not itemize, up to $1,000, or $2,000 for married taxpayers filing jointly. Eligibility and limits depend on the recipient and other federal rules; these figures do not make every donation deductible. See IRS Topic No. 506 and IRS Tax Tip 2026-57, dated July 23, 2026. Check IRS guidance for the tax year in which you give.

If you receive goods or services in return for a charitable payment, the deductible amount is generally reduced by their fair market value. IRS Publication 526 for 2025 explains contribution rules, limits, and substantiation. Consult the current publication for the relevant tax year, particularly for noncash gifts or more complex donations.
What records should I keep for charitable donations?
- Cash gifts: Keep a bank record or written communication from the qualified organization showing its name, the date, and the amount.
- Contributions of $250 or more: Obtain a contemporaneous written acknowledgment describing cash or property given and stating whether the organization provided goods or services in return.
- Property donations: Keep records of the donated property and consult the applicable IRS guidance about valuation, forms, or appraisal requirements.
Record the recipient, date, amount or item, and any acknowledgment. A saved receipt or basic spreadsheet is enough as a personal tracking method; the IRS requires adequate proof for claimed deductions but does not endorse a particular recordkeeping product. The substantiation rules are described in IRS Topic No. 506 and Publication 526.
Keep personal thank-yous separate from charitable giving
Make separate lists for household tips or gifts and donations to organizations. That distinction prevents a personal thank-you from being mistaken for a deductible contribution and makes it easier to apply the right policy checks and tax records to each. For a business owner giving a gift in the course of business, the federal business gift deduction limit is a separate issue: IRS Publication 463 for 2025 describes a $25-per-person limit. That business tax rule is not a personal holiday tipping recommendation.
