Possibly, but there is no verified Hertz-wide policy offering every EV renter a chance to buy the car. The claim comes from a user-generated Reddit report by a customer already renting a Tesla. It does not document a price, financing, eligibility rules or a formal US Hertz program. Hertz UK does advertise a separate Rent2Buy pathway, so geography and contract type are decisive.
What the reported offer actually establishes
Anecdotal US request
The Reddit post says Hertz asked an existing Tesla renter whether they wanted to purchase and keep the vehicle. That is evidence of one reported interaction, not proof that all renters receive an offer or that Hertz has announced a standard sale process.
No published transaction terms establish the vehicle’s price, financing, mileage, VIN, warranty coverage or eligibility requirements. Rental rates and charging fees cannot be used to calculate a sale price.
A separate UK ownership program
Hertz UK’s PCO page advertises “Hertz Rent2Buy.” Hertz says a driver can rent a new or low-mileage EV and become the owner “in as little as 2 years,” with listed locations and pre-orders. That is a named UK program; it does not show that a US renter in the Reddit report received the same contract.

Charging rules you still need to settle
Hertz’s US EV rental terms describe three ways to handle charging. These are rental-billing rules, not a purchase quote.

Before signing a purchase agreement, ask Hertz to close out any EVPO or EVSC amount separately from the vehicle price. A charging balance is not a discount or credit toward ownership unless the written contract expressly says so.

Confirm every item that comes with the Tesla
Hertz’s terms identify Tesla equipment for which the renter is responsible:
- One Mobile Connector in a Tesla Charging Kit
- The kit’s storage bag
- A NEMA 5-15 adapter
- A J1772 adapter
Missing or damaged equipment can generate charges. Have the sale paperwork list each connector, cable, key and adapter included, and obtain a written statement that no rental-equipment charge remains open. Photograph the equipment and the vehicle at handover.

If Hertz contacts you, request a written offer
Treat a phone call or message as an invitation to investigate, not as a completed deal. Ask for the following before paying a deposit:
- Contract type and seller: Clarify whether this is a one-time sale of a fleet vehicle, a Rent2Buy agreement or another arrangement, and which Hertz entity will appear on the contract.
- Vehicle identity: Obtain the VIN, exact model and trim, current mileage, in-service date and title status. Match the VIN on the car, contract and title documents.
- Condition records: Request accident, damage, maintenance and inspection records, plus a battery-health report or the test method Hertz uses.
- Warranty: Get the remaining vehicle and high-voltage battery warranty in writing, including transfer rules and exclusions.
- Total price: Request the cash price and every required tax, registration, documentation, delivery and other fee. Do not compare only a weekly or monthly figure.
- Financing: If financing is offered, obtain the annual percentage rate, term, down payment, amount financed, total of payments and any prepayment or late fees. Compare it with an independent lender.
- Mileage and use limits: Confirm whether the agreement limits mileage before ownership, charges for excess miles or restricts commercial use.
- Cancellation and return rights: Ask when you can cancel, whether a deposit is refundable and what happens if inspection, title or financing conditions fail.
- Rental closeout: Get a ledger showing the final rental date, charging amounts, tolls, damage claims and equipment charges, with any disputed item identified.

How to judge whether keeping the car is affordable
Build an all-in comparison rather than treating the offer as a special bargain. Add the purchase price, taxes and fees, financing interest, insurance changes, registration, charging equipment you would need and expected maintenance. Then compare that total with similar used EVs carrying a documented history and transferable battery coverage.

- Separate sunk rental costs: Money already paid for past rental days or charging is normally a cost of using the car, not equity, unless the written contract provides a credit.
- Value battery risk explicitly: Battery capacity, warranty status and replacement coverage can matter more than a small difference in monthly payment.
- Account for fleet history: Ask how prior rental use is recorded for title, insurance and resale purposes; do not assume a retail-like history.
- Stress-test the payment: Check that the payment remains manageable after insurance, charging and routine vehicle costs, not just during the rental period.
Availability depends on where you live
A US renter should ask the local Hertz office or the Hertz entity named in the rental contract whether that specific VIN is eligible for sale. Ask for a written offer from an authorized representative and verify that the seller can transfer title. A UK resident should confirm that the desired location currently participates in Rent2Buy and request the current contract, because listed locations and inventory can change.
Do not assume that a conversation with one branch creates a nationwide entitlement, or that the UK program’s terms apply in another country.

Bottom line
Hertz may be testing or making individual purchase offers to some EV renters, but the only documented US evidence here is an anecdote. Until Hertz supplies a written, vehicle-specific contract, treat the car as a normal rental and the proposed purchase as an unverified transaction. Verify the VIN, title, mileage, battery warranty, condition, complete price, financing, charging equipment and all outstanding rental charges before committing.
