Short answer: As checked August 18, 2026, T-Mobile has the clearest verified “iPhone 17 On Us” promotion. It can offset the phone’s price through 24 monthly bill credits, but it requires qualifying credit, a port-in, a new voice line, an eligible plan, taxes on the pre-credit price and a $35 device connection charge. Apple’s direct purchase is simpler: the iPhone 17 is advertised from $799 with carrier connectivity, while an unlocked 256GB configuration is listed at $829. Apple Trade In provides an immediate estimated credit of $35 to $695 rather than a universally free phone.
In every case, calculate the service cost, upfront charges and cost of leaving early—not just the device payment shown as $0.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| T-Mobile iPhone 17 “On Us” | Up to $830 through credits | Not required for the highlighted switcher offer | Eligible port-in and new voice line | 24 monthly credits | People already planning to switch and stay two years | Plan, financing, taxes, fees and early-departure risk |
| Apple direct plus Apple Trade In | iPhone 17 from $799 connected; unlocked 256GB listed at $829; trade-in estimate $35–$695 | Optional | No carrier switch required | Immediate purchase credit after verification | Unlocked ownership and flexibility | Usually a partial discount, not a free phone |
| Carrier promotion through Apple | Apple advertises up to $800–$1,100, depending on carrier and eligibility | Usually required | Carrier-specific | Often monthly carrier credits | Comparing carrier financing at Apple checkout | Headline maximums are not guaranteed |
| Existing-customer promotion | Account-specific; not stated publicly as one universal amount | Usually offer-specific | May use an existing eligible line | Offer-specific | Customers who do not want to switch | Check the account and written terms |

What “free iPhone 17” actually means
Free after 24 monthly bill credits
The carrier finances the phone, then applies a credit each month. If the installment and credit are equal, the net device payment appears to be $0. You still have a financed balance, and credits normally depend on keeping the required line active and the account in good standing for the full term.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Instant trade-in discount
Apple Trade In reduces the purchase price after Apple receives and verifies the old device. This is an immediate credit, not a service commitment. Apple says the estimate can change if the phone’s actual condition differs from the description: Apple Trade In.
“Up to” credit
“Up to $830,” “up to $999” or “up to $1,100” describes a ceiling for selected models, conditions, plans and account types. Enter the exact model, storage and condition before treating any amount as your saving.
T-Mobile’s current switcher offer
T-Mobile’s highlighted promotion is iPhone 17 On Us, with no trade-in required under the advertised switcher scenario. The offer page says the following terms apply as checked August 18, 2026:
- Qualifying credit approval.
- Port-in from AT&T, Verizon or another eligible carrier.
- A new voice line.
- An eligible plan advertised at $85 or more per month with AutoPay, plus taxes and fees. T-Mobile also lists a Better Value option of three lines for $140 or more per month with AutoPay, plus taxes and fees.
- A $35 device connection charge due at sale.
- Tax calculated on the phone’s full pre-credit price.
- Up to $830 delivered through 24 monthly bill credits.
T-Mobile says to allow up to two billing cycles for credits to begin. Credits can stop if the promotional line is cancelled, suspended, delinquent or otherwise loses eligibility. Cancelling the account can make the remaining device-finance balance due; paying the device off early can also end the credits. Read the live terms at T-Mobile’s iPhone offer page and confirm eligibility at T-Mobile checkout.
Who should consider it
- You already intend to leave your current carrier.
- Your household needs the required number of lines.
- Your current service cost is close to the qualifying T-Mobile plan.
- You can keep the line active for 24 months.
Who should avoid it
- You need an unlocked phone immediately or may move overseas.
- You would add an unnecessary line.
- You expect to cancel or switch within two years.
- The qualifying plan costs substantially more than your current service.
- You cannot pay tax on the pre-credit price and the connection charge.
Apple direct purchase and Apple Trade In
Apple’s general iPhone 17 page advertises a price from $799 with a carrier connectivity discount. The unlocked 256GB configuration is listed at $829, while the 512GB model is shown at $999. Those figures are configuration- and checkout-specific, so do not describe $799 as the universal unlocked cash price.

Apple displays an estimated standard Trade In range of $35 to $695 on the iPhone 17 purchase page. The final amount depends on the manufacturer, model, capacity, condition and verification. An unlocked purchase is generally preferable when you want to change carriers, travel internationally, sell the phone freely or avoid service-linked credits.
Apple also advertises carrier promotions of up to $800–$1,100 on a new iPhone, depending on the carrier, plan, trade-in and offer. Examples shown in Apple’s iPhone 17 materials include AT&T savings up to $800 after trade-in and T-Mobile savings up to $999 with an eligible trade-in in any condition. These are maximums, not guaranteed values. Select the carrier during checkout and read the resulting order summary.
Trade-in value versus promotional value
A standard device value is based on what the phone is worth after inspection. A carrier promotional tier can be far higher, but only when every rule is met.

- Exact manufacturer, model and storage capacity.
- Whether the phone powers on and has a readable identifier.
- Screen, body, battery and liquid damage.
- Removal of Activation Lock and other account locks.
- Whether the phone is financed, blacklisted or otherwise encumbered.
T-Mobile’s trade-in terms require the device to arrive by the stated deadline and satisfy the applicable promotional rules. “Any condition” does not mean every damaged or unsafe phone qualifies; exclusions can include swollen batteries, devices that do not power on, activation locks and blacklisted or unpaid devices.
Choose by your situation
| Your situation | Likely best starting point |
|---|---|
| Willing to switch and stay 24 months | Compare T-Mobile’s total two-year cost with your current bill |
| Already on T-Mobile with an eligible premium plan | Check the account-specific upgrade offer before changing plans |
| Want an unlocked phone | Apple direct purchase plus Apple Trade In |
| Have a recent, high-value iPhone | Compare Apple’s immediate quote with the carrier’s total promotional credits |
| Have an older or damaged phone | Check the exact carrier condition rules; do not assume eligibility |
| May leave your carrier soon | Avoid a 24-month credit promotion |
| Need several family phones | Compare the entire household bill, not individual $0 payments |
| Have uncertain credit | Confirm financing approval before relying on the headline deal |
Calculate the real cost
Use this formula for any carrier promotion:
Total deal cost = upfront tax and fees + qualifying service during the credit period + device payments not offset by credits + required new-line costs − the value of service you would have purchased anyway.
Rank #3
For a switch, isolate the premium:
Net premium over current service = (new qualifying plan cost − current plan cost) × required months + upfront charges + any unpaid device balance if you leave early.
For example, paying $20 more per month for 24 months adds $480 in service cost before tax and fees. That extra cost can erase much of the phone saving.
How to claim a promotion safely
- Confirm whether the offer requires a port-in, new line, specific plan or trade-in.
- Enter the exact iPhone 17 storage configuration and trade-in condition.
- Check financing approval, tax on the full device price and all connection or activation charges.
- Screenshot the offer, credit amount, promotion identifier and order summary.
- Verify whether the device is locked and read the carrier’s current unlock policy before checkout.
- Back up the old phone, transfer authentication apps, disable Find My, remove it from your Apple Account, sign out, erase it and remove any physical SIM.
- Photograph the device, serial number and condition; package it exactly as instructed and keep the receipt and tracking number.
- Check the first two billing statements for the promised credits. T-Mobile says credits may take two bill cycles.
Do not send accessories unless requested. Keep records until the trade-in is accepted and the credit appears.

The offer disappears at checkout
Typical causes include the wrong plan, an existing line instead of a new line, an ineligible port-in, financing denial, a different purchase channel, an expired promotion or an ineligible trade-in tier. Treat the written order summary as controlling rather than relying on an informal promise.
The trade-in is downgraded
Compare the inspection result with your photographs and shipping proof, then contact support promptly. Do not wipe or dispose of the replacement phone until the valuation and credit are settled.

You return the new phone
Apple says returning a new device bought online with a trade-in can automatically cancel the trade-in, and the original device may not be returnable in some cases. Review the return and trade-in interaction at Apple’s Trade In page before shipping anything.

You are still paying for the old phone
Check the existing installment agreement. A carrier may reject the trade-in, or you may remain responsible for its unpaid balance even after accepting a new promotion.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get an iPhone 17 free without switching?
The verified T-Mobile offer described here is a switcher promotion requiring a port-in and new line. Existing customers must check their account for a separate, plan-specific offer; there is no universal free-phone entitlement.
Is the $799 Apple price the unlocked price?
No. Apple advertises $799 with carrier connectivity, while the unlocked 256GB listing found was $829. Confirm the configuration and checkout conditions.
Will a carrier-financed phone be unlocked immediately?
Do not assume so. Unlock timing and requirements vary by carrier and can change. Check the current policy before ordering, and ask whether early payoff would end promotional credits.
Can I trade in a phone with an unpaid balance?
Eligibility varies, but an unpaid, blacklisted or otherwise encumbered device can fail inspection. Review your current installment agreement and the offer’s written trade-in rules first.
