Has BA CityFlyer ordered the A220 or E2?
The public record reviewed does not establish an A220 or E2 order, selection, or procurement timetable for BA CityFlyer. British Airways’ fleet page lists “Embraer 190 – BA CityFlyer,” while the UK Civil Aviation Authority’s aircraft type and utilisation report identifies BA CityFlyer Ltd as operating Embraer ERJ190-100 aircraft. A BA CityFlyer recruitment page likewise describes a modern Embraer fleet, without mentioning an E2 order.
These sources support the reported fleet position, not a claim that no private discussions or later announcement exist. No named-person statement about an A220-versus-E2 decision was identified in the sources reviewed.
Which aircraft is BA CityFlyer using now?
The British Airways fleet page and the CAA report both identify Embraer 190 aircraft in BA CityFlyer’s operation; the CAA uses the designation ERJ190-100. The recruitment page describes the operation as serving business, leisure, and charter customers across the UK and Europe. These descriptions do not establish a specific aircraft replacement plan.

What is known about the A220—and what is not?
Airbus’ June 2026 A220 fact sheet covers the A220-100 and A220-300. It states a maximum range of up to 3,600 nautical miles, a manufacturer specification rather than an analysis of BA CityFlyer routes. Airbus also reported the following production and backlog figures:
- 517 A220s delivered and 592 in backlog at the end of May 2026.
- 75 A220 deliveries during 2024 and 93 during 2025.
On its product page, accessed 7 October 2026, Airbus says the A220 delivers a 25% reduction in fuel burn and CO₂ emissions per seat compared with previous-generation aircraft. That is an Airbus claim; the page does not provide a like-for-like comparison with an E2 or a BA CityFlyer operating result.

The available evidence does not support declaring either aircraft a better choice for BA CityFlyer’s London City flying. A manufacturer’s range figure alone cannot answer a route-suitability question: the airline’s intended configuration, passenger demand, payload, airport and runway constraints, and operating assumptions would also matter. No route-level BA CityFlyer analysis or matched A220-versus-E2 comparison is established in the sources reviewed.

A fair fleet decision would require the airline’s planned missions and commercial assumptions. The relevant comparison would include:
- Capacity: seats and cabin layout against demand on the routes being considered.
- Mission and airport fit: payload, range, runway performance, and airport constraints under the actual operating conditions.
- Operating economics: fuel and maintenance costs calculated on matched assumptions.
- Transition costs: pilot and engineering training, spare parts, and the cost of moving from the existing fleet.
- Acquisition and support: delivery timing, financing, residual value, and manufacturer support.
- Operational resilience: schedule recovery and the benefits or costs of fleet commonality.
These are the inputs needed to compare the aircraft; they are not evidence that BA CityFlyer has published or completed such an evaluation.
