Bank of America’s published materials do not establish a separate product called a “Platinum Debit Card.” They describe a debit or ATM card and, separately, a rewards-program tier. “Platinum” refers to the former Preferred Rewards tier—not to a distinct debit-card type. Because Bank of America announced that its rewards program would transition to BofA Rewards on or about May 26, 2026, check your current account disclosures and the bank’s fee schedule for the terms that apply to you.
What does “Platinum” mean for a Bank of America debit card?
A debit card is linked to a deposit account and can be used to access the account, including at ATMs. “Platinum” in Bank of America’s fee materials refers to a Preferred Rewards status tier, not a separate debit-card product. The bank’s published information distinguishes the card and account fees from rewards-program benefits. See the Bank of America Personal Schedule of Fees.
This distinction also matters if you are comparing debit cards with credit cards: a rewards-tier name does not make a debit card a credit card, and the fee schedule cited here does not establish that a “Platinum Debit Card” is a product name.
What ATM fees can apply?
Under Bank of America’s 2026 personal fee schedule, a withdrawal or transfer at a non-Bank of America ATM in a foreign country carries a $5 fee per transaction. The ATM operator may charge its own fee, and other account fees may also apply. The schedule’s amount is not a universal total cost for every foreign ATM transaction; check the fee disclosures for your account and the ATM’s on-screen notice.

For U.S. non-Bank of America ATMs, the schedule describes tier-specific benefits for enrolled Preferred Rewards customers. The former Platinum tier’s stated benefit covered one withdrawal and one transfer per statement cycle: a waiver of Bank of America’s fee and a refund of the ATM operator fee for those transactions. Platinum Honors and Diamond Honors tiers had broader benefits under the schedule. These benefits are limited by tier, enrollment, transaction type, and statement cycle; they should not be assumed to apply to every customer or ATM use.
How is the rewards program changing?
In a February 2026 announcement, Bank of America said Preferred Rewards would transition to BofA Rewards on or about May 26, 2026. The bank described BofA Rewards as “a no fee loyalty program designed to reward and recognize clients for their full relationship across their Bank of America banking and Merrill investing accounts.” It said the new program’s tiers are based on three-month average balances across qualifying Bank of America and Merrill accounts. Bank of America said existing Preferred Rewards customers would transition automatically, with existing Gold and Platinum members mapped to Preferred Plus, Platinum Honors members to Preferred Honors, and Diamond Honors members to Premier. This changes rewards-program names and tier mapping; it does not establish a new debit-card product or a change to the card’s name. Because the transition date has passed, verify the current program name and benefits with the bank rather than relying on a former tier label.

How to confirm the fee and benefit for your account
- Check your account’s current personal fee schedule and disclosures on Bank of America’s website. Find the section covering debit or ATM card transactions and the specific transaction location.
- Check your rewards enrollment and current tier in your Bank of America account. Do not assume a former Platinum benefit applies under the current program without confirming the mapped tier and terms.
- Before an ATM transaction, review any fee displayed by the ATM operator. That charge may be separate from Bank of America’s fee.
- If the fee or waiver is unclear, contact Bank of America using the contact details associated with your account and ask about the exact account, ATM location, transaction type, and rewards tier.
