In October 2024, Bloomberg reported that Bandai Namco Studios employees whose projects had been cancelled were being assigned to rooms without work, a practice described as an “oidashi beya,” or “expulsion room.” The company denied having an organization designed to pressure employees to resign. The room assignments and their alleged purpose have not been independently established.
What does “expulsion room” mean in the Bandai Namco report?
“Expulsion room” is an English rendering of the Japanese term “oidashi beya.” In Bloomberg’s October 2024 account, the term referred to rooms where employees allegedly had no work assignments after projects were cancelled. The report concerned Bandai Namco Studios, the development subsidiary—not necessarily every part of the broader Bandai Namco group.

Bloomberg’s account relied on unnamed people familiar with the matter. It reported that roughly 200 employees had been moved to such rooms and nearly 100 had resigned by the time of the report. Those figures were attributed to the anonymous sources; Bandai Namco did not confirm them. Bloomberg’s report was reproduced in a syndicated transcript.
What did Bandai Namco say?
A Bandai Namco representative denied that the studio had an organization intended to make employees leave voluntarily. The representative said: “There is no organization like an ‘oidashi beya’ at Bandai Namco Studios designed to pressure people to leave voluntarily.”

The representative also said that after a game is discontinued, some employees may wait before receiving their next project assignment, and that assignments proceed as new projects emerge. The company’s explanation and Bloomberg’s account are competing descriptions; the available reporting does not independently establish that the rooms were intended to induce resignations.
Did 200 employees resign?
No. Bloomberg reported that roughly 200 employees had been moved and nearly 100 had resigned, citing unnamed people familiar with the matter. Those numbers are not company-confirmed, and the report does not establish that all reported departures were resignations caused by the room practice.

A later article reported public-data headcounts linked to the Japan Pension Service: 1,294 employees listed on April 1, 2024, and 1,177 on February 4, 2025—a net decrease of 117. These figures show a change in listed headcount, not why individual employees left. They do not identify how many departures were resignations, layoffs, transfers, or connected to the reported room assignments. PocketGamer.biz reported the figures on February 7, 2025.

- The identities and later employment status of the people said to have been moved or to have left.
- What work, if any, those employees were assigned while waiting for another project.
- How many departures were voluntary and whether any were related to the reported room assignments.
- Whether the described practice continued after the October 2024 report.
- Whether the later headcount decline was connected to the allegations.
The headcount figures are a separate type of evidence from the anonymous-source account: they document a net change in listed employees, but do not confirm the alleged practice or explain individual departures. A February 2025 SpazioGames account also reported the decline, but did not independently verify the room allegations.
