The original plan was based on 925 full-time employees, implying roughly 139 positions, although GoPro did not disclose an exact number. The company later expanded the 2024 plan to approximately 26% of its Q2 2024 headcount and announced a separate reduction of about 23% in April 2026.
What GoPro’s original 15% announcement said
In an August 19, 2024 SEC filing, GoPro announced a restructuring plan involving an approximately 15% reduction in its global workforce.

The calculation was based on 925 full-time employees at the end of the second quarter of 2024. Fifteen percent of that figure is 138.75, so the announcement implied approximately 139 positions. That is a calculation from the disclosed headcount, not an exact number stated by GoPro.
The company said implementation would begin in the third quarter of 2024 and be substantially complete by the end of that year. It estimated aggregate restructuring charges of $5 million to $7 million, including approximately $1 million in the third quarter and $4 million to $6 million in the fourth quarter.

Why GoPro announced the restructuring
GoPro said the workforce reduction was intended to lower operating expenses and support a target reduction of approximately $50 million in projected fiscal 2024 operating expenses. The company was targeting fiscal 2025 operating expenses of approximately $320 million, plus or minus $5 million.
The $50 million figure was an operating-expense target, not a guaranteed amount of net savings. Restructuring charges such as severance and other employee-related costs create near-term expenses even when a workforce reduction is expected to lower future costs.
The 2024 plan became larger
The 15% plan was not the final version of GoPro’s 2024 restructuring. On October 29, 2024, GoPro filed an updated restructuring plan that increased the anticipated workforce reduction to approximately 26% of its Q2 2024 headcount.

The estimated restructuring charges also rose to $15.5 million to $18.5 million. The revised estimate included approximately $6 million to $8 million in project-cancellation costs, in addition to employee-related expenses.
GoPro later reported that the August and October actions reduced its global workforce by 25% compared with its Q2 2024 headcount and produced $18.7 million in restructuring charges, including $12.7 million in severance and $6 million in project-cancellation costs. The distinction matters: the company announced an anticipated reduction of approximately 26%, but later reported an actual reduction of 25% against that reference point.
GoPro announced another reduction in April 2026
GoPro’s latest specific workforce action in the cited filings was announced on April 7, 2026. The separate restructuring involved approximately 145 employees, or about 23% of the company’s 631-person headcount at the end of the first quarter of 2026.

According to the April 2026 SEC filing, implementation began in the second quarter and was expected to be substantially complete by the end of 2026. GoPro estimated aggregate charges of $11.5 million to $15 million, primarily for employee termination benefits, severance and healthcare benefits.
This 23% reduction should not be presented simply as 145 additional jobs after the 2024 cuts. It is based on a different reporting period and a much smaller headcount than the 925-employee Q2 2024 baseline.
Why GoPro remains under pressure
GoPro’s 2026 disclosures describe several overlapping pressures rather than one publicly identified cause. They include pressure on camera sales, declining subscription counts, debt and covenant obligations, supply-chain and memory-component costs, tariffs and the need for additional financing.

The company has also been evaluating strategic alternatives, including a potential sale or merger, exploring opportunities in defense and aerospace, and considering asset sales. A 2026 company filing disclosed substantial doubt about GoPro’s ability to continue as a going concern unless financing, covenant and strategic measures succeed.
That disclosure does not mean GoPro announced plans to file for bankruptcy. The company said it had not initiated or considered specific plans to seek bankruptcy protection.

What the restructuring could mean
For employees
The announced reductions may affect roles, institutional knowledge and morale across the company. Severance and timing can vary according to local legal requirements and employment arrangements. GoPro has not publicly identified every department affected, so claims about specific teams should be treated cautiously.

For customers
There is no basis to say that camera support, warranties, subscriptions or product launches will automatically end because of the workforce reductions. However, GoPro has acknowledged that lower research-and-development and marketing spending could constrain product development and demand generation.
For investors
Workforce reductions can lower recurring operating expenses and improve operating leverage if the business stabilizes. They also create one-time charges and can weaken product development, marketing reach and execution capacity. A review of strategic alternatives is not the same as a completed sale or merger.

The bottom line on the 15% headline
“GoPro to cut 15% of its workforce” is accurate only as a dated description of the company’s original August 19, 2024 announcement. The plan was later expanded, with GoPro reporting a 25% workforce reduction against the Q2 2024 baseline. In April 2026, the company announced another restructuring affecting approximately 23% of its smaller Q1 2026 workforce.
