You can find paid writing work on freelance marketplaces and job boards—but “essay writing” can mean anything from an original blog post to a student’s graded paper. The distinction matters: Upwork and Fiverr prohibit completing academic work that a student is expected to submit as their own. Focus instead on original content, editing completed drafts, tutoring, or research support that follows each platform’s rules.
Which essay-writing jobs are permitted?
Before accepting a project, establish what the client needs and how the work will be used. Original articles, blog posts, copywriting, and some coaching or editing can be legitimate services. Completing a homework assignment, exam, thesis, or graded paper for a student to submit under their own name is different: it replaces the student’s assessed work.

- Generally viable: original blog and marketing content, proofreading a completed draft, tutoring, and research support that does not produce work for dishonest submission.
- Do not accept: requests to write or complete academic work that the student is expected to author independently and submit for credit.
- Clarify first: application essays and personal statements. Offer coaching or editing only where the platform’s rules and the client’s requirements allow it; do not misrepresent who wrote the work.
Upwork explicitly identifies supplying work for a student to submit as their own as academic cheating, while saying proofreading, research, and tutoring are allowed: Upwork’s prohibited-jobs policy. Fiverr prohibits services that complete assignments expected to be done independently, but says proofreading of a completed document is allowed: Fiverr’s academic and workplace dishonesty policy. Policies can change, so read the current terms before listing or accepting a service.
Where can writers find paid work?
Upwork: searchable jobs and proposals
Upwork lets freelancers create a profile, search hourly or fixed-price job posts, submit proposals, work under contract, and receive payment after client approval. Its writing and translation page reports 20K+ jobs posted weekly, a changing figure reported by Upwork itself; it does not isolate essay assignments or guarantee that a new freelancer will find suitable work. See Upwork’s Writing & Translation jobs page for its marketplace workflow and current listings.
#1 Best Overall
Upwork’s current help page sets minimum contract amounts of USD 3 per hour and USD 5 for a fixed-price project. A fixed-price contract that specifies hours must also meet the USD 3-per-hour equivalent. These are platform floors, not recommended rates for sustainable writing work: Upwork’s minimum pay-rate rules.
Upwork’s client-facing essay-writer page displays an estimated USD 38–95 per hour, along with project ranges. That is a general hiring estimate shown to clients—not a typical freelancer’s take-home pay, a guaranteed rate, or permission to ghostwrite assessed work. The academic-integrity policy still applies: Upwork’s essay-writer hiring page.

Fiverr: package permitted services clearly
Fiverr is organized around services that freelancers offer. If you use it, describe the permitted service precisely—for example, proofreading a client’s completed draft or offering tutoring. Do not advertise assignment completion or accept requests to produce academic work the client must complete independently. Review Fiverr’s policy before publishing a service.
ProBlogger Jobs: blog and content listings
ProBlogger is a job board for blog and content work, including roles for writers, copywriters, editors, journalists, researchers, and content marketers. Its advertiser listing prices are USD 80 for a standard 15-day listing and USD 160 for a featured 15-day listing; those are employer costs to post an ad, not application fees for writers. Details are on ProBlogger Jobs’ about page.

Candidates can register for a free account with an online resume, employer discoverability, saved applications, bookmarks, and job alerts. ProBlogger also warns that listings are third-party advertisements and are not endorsed by the board, so assess each employer and posting yourself: ProBlogger’s candidate registration page.
How should you choose between them?
| Option | How you find work | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Upwork | Search job posts and send proposals; projects proceed under a contract. | Confirm the work is permitted, review the scope and payment terms, and treat platform minimums as floors rather than rate targets. |
| Fiverr | Offer clearly defined services for clients to order. | Keep the service within policy, such as proofreading a completed draft or tutoring; reject requests to complete independent academic assignments. |
| ProBlogger Jobs | Browse third-party job listings and use candidate tools such as saved applications and alerts. | Match your samples and expertise to the posting, and vet the employer because listings are not endorsed by the board. |
Choose based on the kind of legitimate work you want and how you prefer to find clients. Upwork’s proposal-and-contract workflow differs from ProBlogger’s job-board model; Fiverr centers on the services you list. No cited source establishes a new writer’s odds of being hired or a dependable volume of suitable essay work.

How to screen a writing request
- Ask what the deliverable is. Is it an original article, editing of a completed draft, tutoring, or research assistance—or a finished answer to an assessed assignment?
- Ask how the client will use it. Decline work intended to be submitted as the student’s own independent work.
- Check the platform’s current policy. Apply Upwork’s and Fiverr’s rules to the actual request, not just the service title or category.
- Agree on scope and payment before starting. On Upwork, use the contract workflow and understand the approval process. On a job board, independently assess the employer and terms.
- Keep your listing and samples accurate. State what you edit, teach, or write; do not market academic assignment completion as a permitted service.
What can you realistically expect to earn?
The available figures describe different things: Upwork’s minimum contract amounts are policy floors, its USD 38–95 hourly range is a client-facing estimate, and ProBlogger’s USD 80 and USD 160 prices are charges to advertisers. None establishes typical writer earnings or take-home pay. Rates and job availability vary by assignment, client, experience, and current marketplace conditions; the cited pages do not establish representative earnings or application success.
