The call closed on September 15, 2024; it is not open now. The program has since named 2025 and 2026 honorees, so anyone interested in a future cycle should check the official program page for current dates and rules.
What Game Changers is—and what the 2024 announcement meant
Game Changers is a startup recognition program, not a game launch or investment offer. Lightspeed and GamesBeat partnered on the list, with Nasdaq also named as a partner in the June 12, 2024 announcement. The program highlights companies working in games and interactive media and offers industry visibility and community access.
The program began with an inaugural list announced in October 2023: GamesBeat reported 25 selected companies, 15 industry judges, and five categories. The June 2024 announcement marked its return and opened nominations for the 2025 edition. Its “celebration of resilience and adaptation” wording described the program’s theme, not a quote from a named person. GamesBeat’s June 2024 announcement is the source for the original return notice and its deadline.
Is the nomination period open now?
No. The 2024 announcement set September 15, 2024 as the deadline for the 2025 list. It also described a planned reception around GamesBeat Summit on October 29, 2024. Both dates belong to that closed cycle, not to a current application period.

- If you want to build a better future, you must believe in secrets.
- The great secret of our time is that there are still uncharted frontiers to explore and new inventions to create. In Zero to One, legendary entrepreneur and investor Peter Thiel shows how we can find singular ways to create those new things.
Later cycles have their own timelines. GamesBeat announced the third annual cycle, labeled Game Changers 2026, in August 2025. The organizer’s current program page presents the 2026 categories and winners. Check that page for any future nomination opening, deadline, or eligibility conditions rather than relying on the 2024 call: Lightspeed’s Game Changers page.
How selection worked across the editions
Published process details vary by year. In 2024, GamesBeat said Lightspeed partners and GamesBeat editors would narrow entries to 100. Judges would score finalists from 1 to 5 on innovation and potential to adapt and excel. The later reported shortlist sizes were different:
Rank #2
| Edition | Published selection details | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Inaugural list, announced October 2023 | 25 companies and 15 industry judges; GamesBeat described five categories. | GamesBeat, October 25, 2023 |
| 2025 list, reported October 2024 | Entries were reported as almost 40% higher than the prior year. Editors and investors narrowed the pool to 75; judges selected 25. | GamesBeat, October 29, 2024 |
| 2026 list, reported November 2025 | Submissions were narrowed to 75, and judges scored finalists before 25 winners were selected. | GamesBeat, November 19, 2025 |
These are program-reported figures, not measures of the overall game-startup market. The “almost 40%” comparison refers specifically to entries for the 2025 edition versus the preceding year.
Eligibility and categories depend on the year
For the 2025 edition, GamesBeat reported eligibility limits of no more than five years in business and no more than 50 full-time employees. Those are published criteria for that edition; they should not be assumed to apply unchanged to later cycles. Confirm the rules for the year you plan to enter on the organizer’s page.

Category names also shifted. The 2024 return announcement included blockchain/Web3, while the later published lists emphasized generative AI, infrastructure, and UGC. The categories below are edition-specific, not a single permanent set:
- 2024 announcement: game studios; gaming platforms such as UGC and social; interactive technology, including AI and 3D; extended reality (AR/VR/MR); and blockchain/Web3. GamesBeat’s 2024 announcement.
- 2025 results: 3D technology and infrastructure; generative AI and agents; game studios and UGC; interactive media platforms; and extended reality (AR and VR). GamesBeat’s 2025 results report.
- 2026 program: generative AI; 3D technology and infrastructure; interactive media platforms; game studios and UGC; and extended reality (AR and VR). Lightspeed’s program page.
What selected startups receive
The 2024 announcement described benefits including GamesBeat coverage, access to a community, and one-to-one mentoring. It said participation was free and did not require giving up equity. Those statements describe the program as announced for that cycle; prospective applicants should confirm the terms for any later edition directly with the organizer.

What founders should do before a future application
- Check the official Lightspeed Game Changers page for an active cycle and its dates. The September 15, 2024 deadline is expired.
- Read the current edition’s eligibility rules, categories, and submission instructions. Do not carry the 2025 age and employee limits or an earlier category list forward without confirmation.
- Prepare a clear account of the company’s product, innovation, and ability to adapt and grow; these align with the scoring criteria described in the 2024 announcement.
- Understand the program as recognition and visibility, not a promise of investment, selection, or a particular business outcome.
