Fyre owner-chef John Mountain said bookings surged after the restaurant announced a ban on vegans in June 2023. That was his description of the response—not an independently verified measure of revenue or bookings. The dispute began after a customer said she had asked in advance for a vegan meal, was told the kitchen could accommodate her, and then received a vegetable dish instead.

Why did Fyre ban vegans?

Fyre is a restaurant in Connolly, Perth, associated with chef John Mountain. In an account published by PerthNow on June 20, 2023, a customer said she had contacted Mountain before her visit to ask whether the restaurant could provide vegan food. Mountain said he agreed to accommodate her with gnocchi and vegetables, but later forgot to tell the kitchen because he was catering a private function.

The customer said the vegetable dish was not filling and cost $32, and argued that restaurants should be able to serve actual plant-based meals. That was the amount reported in her 2023 complaint, not a current menu price. The customer was not named in the report.

Fyre’s public response, as quoted by PerthNow, was: “Sadly all vegans are now banned from Fyre (for mental health reasons).” Mountain described the complaint as personal, while also acknowledging that he had not provided what he had promised. The Guardian’s June 2023 account recounts the same essential sequence: the customer asked ahead, Mountain agreed, he forgot, and she criticized the restaurant afterward.

Did John Mountain forget to make a vegan meal?

Mountain’s account, reported by PerthNow, was that he had agreed to provide gnocchi and vegetables but forgot to alert the kitchen. The customer said the dish she received was a vegetable dish and complained that it was not filling. The published accounts establish that these were the parties’ reported descriptions of the episode; they do not provide an independent account of what happened inside the kitchen.

Did Fyre’s bookings really go through the roof?

In a June 21 follow-up, Mountain told PerthNow: “The bookings have gone ridiculous; they have gone through the roof.” He also called the attention the best marketing he had received. Those were his claims shortly after the announcement. The report did not provide booking records, a comparison with earlier periods, audited sales, or revenue figures to independently establish the scale or duration of any business increase.

What happened after the announcement?

PerthNow reported on June 24, 2023 that Fyre had added a $30-per-person booking fee, deductible from the bill, after the restaurant said it was receiving non-genuine bookings. This is a historical measure reported at the time; the current status of that fee is not established by the available information.

Does Fyre still ban vegans?

Fyre’s official website currently describes the restaurant as led by Chef Johnnie Mountain and includes the wording “And no vegans.” The website lists the address as 13/1 Glenelg Place, Connolly, Western Australia. Its contact page gives Wednesday–Saturday dinner hours and Sunday lunch hours; check the official website and contact page before relying on hours or booking conditions.

The restaurant’s daily menu page says menus change according to available produce and that posted menus are examples, so they should not be treated as a guarantee of current dishes or dietary accommodation.
