He had pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering. The sentence also ordered three years of supervised release, $7,192,064.41 in forfeiture and $22,956,341 in restitution to Polar Air Cargo, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Who was sentenced and what was the case?
Kurien held a senior commercial role at Polar Air Cargo, an international cargo airline. The U.S. Department of Justice said he participated in a scheme that ran from at least 2009 through about July 2021 and involved him and at least nine other people.
According to prosecutors, senior executives accepted kickbacks and received benefits from secret ownership interests in some vendors in exchange for favorable business arrangements with Polar. Kurien pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering. The DOJ’s account of the scheme and Kurien’s sentence is in its October 1, 2024 announcement.
What sentence did Kurien receive?
- Prison: 32 months, or two years and eight months.
- Supervised release: Three years after imprisonment.
- Forfeiture: $7,192,064.41.
- Restitution: $22,956,341 to Polar Air Cargo.
U.S. District Judge Jesse M. Furman imposed the sentence in the Southern District of New York. Forfeiture and restitution are distinct court-ordered amounts; they should not be treated as two interchangeable estimates of the company’s losses.

How much money did prosecutors say was involved?
The DOJ reported several figures with different scopes. The amounts describe separate aspects of the case, not a single total to add together.

The revenue-loss estimate is not the same as money paid in kickbacks, and neither is equivalent to an individual forfeiture or a restitution order. The DOJ also quoted then-U.S. Attorney Damian Williams as saying Kurien took millions in kickbacks and caused tens of millions of dollars in losses to his employer.

What happened to the other defendants?
FreightWaves reported on May 16, 2025, that Skye Xu had received a two-year prison sentence and was the last of the ten charged defendants to be sentenced. That report also said the Atlas Air–DHL Express joint venture had ended earlier in 2025 and that Atlas Air continued operating Polar Air Cargo on a limited basis at that time.
