The Fantastic Four: First Steps won the domestic box-office chart during its July 25–27, 2025 opening weekend, but it did not out-open Superman. Fantastic Four’s reported worldwide debut was $218 million; Superman had the larger domestic opening and finished with higher listed domestic and worldwide grosses. Those figures cover different time periods, and ticket sales are not the same as studio profit.
Who won the box office between Fantastic Four and Superman?
It depends on the measure. The Fantastic Four: First Steps was the No. 1 domestic film on July 25–27, 2025, its opening weekend. Superman placed second that weekend, with $24.9 million in its third weekend, according to the Associated Press report published July 27, 2025. That is a weekend chart result—not evidence that Fantastic Four out-earned Superman over their full theatrical runs.

The two films opened two weeks apart: Superman on July 11 and The Fantastic Four: First Steps on July 25, 2025. Superman had the larger domestic opening, while Fantastic Four’s $218 million worldwide opening was a separate, international-inclusive first-weekend figure. Superman’s final listed worldwide gross is higher.
How do their box-office numbers compare?
The following database figures were accessed October 8, 2026. Opening grosses describe each film’s domestic debut; listed final grosses are cumulative totals. International and worldwide totals are reported by different databases for the two films, so treat the listings as database-reported figures rather than immutable audited accounts.

In the domestic opening comparison, Superman led by about $7.4 million. On the listed final worldwide totals, Superman finished about $96.9 million ahead. The worldwide-opening row does not compare like with like: Fantastic Four’s number is its first-weekend gross, while the Superman figure available here is a running total after three weekends.
What made Fantastic Four’s opening weekend notable?
A $218 million worldwide debut
Disney’s July 27, 2025 opening report put the film at $118 million domestically and $100 million internationally, for a $218 million worldwide opening. The Associated Press reported the same estimated worldwide debut. These are opening-period estimates, not lifetime totals.

Premium formats and audience indicators
Disney said the film played in 4,125 domestic locations, and that 46% of its domestic opening gross came from Premium Large Format, IMAX, 3D, or specialty formats including 4DX, D-Box, and ScreenX. Disney also reported an A− CinemaScore and PostTrak results of 4.5 out of 5 stars, 86% positive, and 62% of respondents rating it “Excellent.” Those are studio-reported opening-period measures of audience response; they do not by themselves explain the films’ later box-office totals.
Did Superman keep earning after Fantastic Four opened?
Yes. AP reported that Superman earned $24.9 million in its third weekend, July 25–27, when Fantastic Four took first place on the domestic chart. Its listed final domestic gross of $354,223,803 and worldwide gross of $618,723,803 show that its theatrical run accumulated beyond that third-weekend snapshot. The cumulative database figures do not say how much Superman earned specifically after Fantastic Four opened.
Do these grosses show which film was more profitable?
No. Box-office gross is ticket sales, not the amount a studio receives as profit. Gross alone does not account for exhibitor shares, distribution costs, marketing, production spending, or revenue from later channels. A comparison of a film’s ticket sales with its production budget is therefore not enough to establish profitability.

Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore senior media analyst, told AP, “I always say it’s bad movie fatigue, not superhero fatigue,” while discussing the films’ performance. That is an analyst’s interpretation, not a causal finding about why either film sold tickets.
