What was reported about Cline’s death
News coverage identified Cline as the man found at the Kimberly Hotel in Manhattan on July 16, 2024. The reports said he fell from the hotel’s 20th floor. They quoted an NYPD statement: “Upon arrival, officers found an unconscious and unresponsive male with injuries indicative of a fall from an elevated position. The investigation remains ongoing.” That quoted police wording described the injuries and the status of the investigation, but did not specify intent or offer a final investigative conclusion. Contemporary reporting and additional coverage reported the death and circumstances.

One contemporary report characterized the death as suicide; that characterization was separate from the police statement quoted in coverage. The distinction is important: the quoted statement alone does not establish a conclusion about manner of death.
Who was James Michael “J. Michael” Cline?
Cline was an entrepreneur best known for co-founding Fandango with Art Levitt. The online movie-ticketing service was founded around 1999–2000; reports differ on which year to use, and the available accounts do not resolve that discrepancy. Coverage of Fandango’s origins gives the differing dates.
