What contemporary reports described was restricted press access to the red carpet—not cancellation of the event. Whether those restrictions were a last-minute pullback or part of the original plan was disputed, and the available reporting does not establish that Disney made the change to minimize backlash.
What happened at the Hollywood premiere
The March 15 event took place at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles, ahead of the film’s March 21, 2025 theatrical release. Reports said journalists were not permitted on the red carpet to interview talent; photographers and Disney’s in-house crew documented the event instead.
The disagreement is about the event’s format, not whether it happened. TheWrap reported on March 11 that the screening and pre-party had been planned as a modest celebration, with about 1,000 guests expected, including celebrities, filmmakers and press. It said Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot would attend and that journalists would not be on the red carpet. The Independent, citing Variety on March 13, described the reduced access as a reported change, and TIME also reported that only photographers and house crew would be allowed on the red carpet.
Those accounts support saying press access was limited. They do not establish that Disney cancelled the premiere itself or settle whether the restrictions were newly imposed or part of the plan from the outset.

Was the decision made to minimize backlash?
That motive has not been confirmed in a direct Disney statement in the cited coverage. The Associated Press later characterized the premiere pullback as prompted by public-relations headaches; that is AP’s account, not a stated explanation from Disney. Coverage connected the event’s press arrangements with the disputes surrounding the film, but connection is not proof of the studio’s intent.
It is also important to distinguish limits on red-carpet interviews from a ban on all press attendance: TheWrap described press among the expected guests while saying journalists would not be on the red carpet.

Why the film had become contentious
Reports described several separate disputes before release. They provide context for the intense attention around the premiere, but do not independently show why Disney chose its event format.
Casting and reactions to Zegler
Rachel Zegler, who is of Colombian descent, was cast as Snow White. TIME and The Independent reported racist and other critical reactions to the casting.

A different take on Snow White’s story
Some fans and commentators objected to Zegler’s remarks about the original film’s romance and her character’s ambitions. As The Independent reported, Zegler said: “It’s no longer 1937 . . . She’s not going to be saved by the prince, and she’s not going to be dreaming about true love. She’s dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be.” This was Zegler describing her approach to the character, not a statement from Disney.
Debate over the seven dwarfs
Peter Dinklage criticized the remake’s approach to a story featuring seven dwarfs. TheWrap reported Disney’s response to ABC News: “To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community.”
Political disputes involving the stars
TIME and The Independent also described political reactions and criticism involving Zegler and Gal Gadot. Those disputes are distinct from the film’s creative decisions; the cited reports do not establish that they determined the premiere’s press policy.
