The Fantastic Four: First Steps earned about $521.9 million worldwide against a reported $200 million production budget. That result can reasonably be called disappointing for a major Marvel release, but it does not establish that the film lost money—or that it will hurt Avengers: Doomsday. The available figures show a commercial result below the scale Marvel may have hoped for, not a proven cause-and-effect link to the next film.
How did The Fantastic Four: First Steps perform at the box office?
Disney reported a $218 million worldwide opening weekend in 2025, including $118 million domestically and $100 million internationally. It said the film opened at No. 1; the opening was the fourth-largest domestic debut of 2025 at the time, according to the Associated Press. The opening was substantial, even though AP reported it was within the studio’s expectations and slightly below some rival studio projections.
The Numbers’ database, accessed in 2026, lists the film’s final reported gross at $521,858,728 worldwide: $274,286,610 domestic and $247,572,118 international. Database totals can be revised, so these figures are best treated as reported totals rather than immutable final accounting.
Disney also said 46% of domestic opening-weekend sales came from premium large format, IMAX, 3D, or specialty formats. That indicates a meaningful share of the debut came from higher-priced or special-format screenings, but the studio’s report does not establish how much revenue Marvel or Disney ultimately retained.

Does $521.9 million against a $200 million budget mean the movie lost money?
No. The Numbers lists a reported $200 million production budget, but comparing that figure with worldwide ticket sales does not calculate profit or loss. The box-office gross is paid by moviegoers to theaters and distributors; it is not the same as the studio’s receipts. A proper profit calculation would also need the film’s marketing and release costs, distribution arrangements, and revenue from other channels. Those figures are not established by the cited sources.
So “disappointing” is a judgment about the scale of the result and expectations for a major Marvel tentpole, not a verified financial statement that the film lost money. In 2026, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was reported by GamesRadar, citing a Variety interview, as saying, “Many things can be true at once,” and that the film “looked and sounded like nothing that had been done in a superhero movie before, and it only [grossed] $521 million.” The bracketed word is editorially supplied in the reported quotation. His remarks lend support to the view that the gross was underwhelming, while not providing a profit-and-loss account.
What do audience scores say about its commercial result?
At launch, Disney reported an A- CinemaScore, a 4.5 out of 5 PostTrak score, 86% positive responses, and 62% of audiences rating it “Excellent.” It also reported an 88% Rotten Tomatoes critics score and a 93% verified audience score at that time. These are launch-period indicators reported by the studio, not a measure of lifetime box-office demand or profitability. AP likewise described critic and audience responses as positive and called the opening Marvel’s biggest since Deadpool & Wolverine.
These figures help distinguish reception from revenue: a film can earn positive audience reactions and still finish below the commercial level expected of a tentpole. Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian put the broader debate this way: “I always say it’s bad movie fatigue, not superhero fatigue,” as quoted by AP. That is an analyst’s interpretation, not proof of a single cause behind this film’s box office.

Could First Steps’ box office be a problem for Avengers: Doomsday?
The films are connected as franchise entries: First Steps introduces the Fantastic Four to the MCU, and Marvel has discussed the Fantastic Four in connection with Avengers: Doomsday. That makes the box-office question relevant, but franchise continuity alone does not demonstrate that one film’s gross will damage another’s commercial prospects.
The cited sources do not show that First Steps’ performance caused a change to Doomsday’s budget, story, release plan, or expected audience. Nor do they establish that viewers’ response to one film predicts their response to the other. Treat the possibility of a “Doomsday problem” as an informed question about Marvel’s expectations and audience demand—not as a demonstrated consequence of this gross.

How does the result compare with earlier Fantastic Four films?
The Numbers’ franchise figures provide a useful nominal-gross comparison, but the films opened in different years and the totals are not adjusted for inflation.
| Film | Reported worldwide gross |
|---|---|
| The Fantastic Four (2005) | $333.1 million |
| Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007) | $289.5 million |
| Fantastic Four (2015) | $167.8 million |
| The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) | $521.9 million |
On this measure, First Steps outgrossed the earlier adaptations. That does not settle whether it met Marvel’s expectations: worldwide gross across different release periods is not a like-for-like comparison of costs, ticket prices, or studio revenue.

What does the result say about Marvel overall?
Disney said First Steps was the 37th consecutive MCU title to open at No. 1 and that the company had passed $3 billion in 2025 theatrical ticket sales by July 27. Those are studio-reported company-wide figures, useful as context but not evidence that this individual film was profitable. The film’s opening strength and its later worldwide total can both be true: the debut was large, while the final result could still be viewed as modest for a Marvel tentpole.
