The ceremony came before trading: technical problems delayed the start of the stock’s first day on the market. Contemporary accounts describe the campus gathering and event preparations, but not a detailed tour of the buildings’ interiors.
What happened at Facebook headquarters on IPO morning?
Facebook priced its IPO on May 17, 2012. Its shares were scheduled to begin trading on Nasdaq the following morning, May 18. That day, the Menlo Park campus became a gathering place for employees and media as the company marked its move onto the public markets.
The Los Angeles Times estimated that about 2,000 workers were on campus. It reported that the campus coffee shop opened around 5 a.m., serving breakfast sandwiches, and that many employees had spent the night at a hackathon. Television trucks and employee-designed event graphics were also part of the morning’s scene. The attendance figure is the newspaper’s contemporaneous estimate, not an audited count.
The SEC’s registration statement identified Facebook’s principal executive office as 1601 Willow Road, Menlo Park, California. Contemporary coverage also referred to the campus as 1 Hacker Way. Those references locate the headquarters campus; they do not establish which building hosted each part of the event or what its interiors looked like.

How did the Nasdaq bell ceremony work?
Zuckerberg rang the Nasdaq opening bell remotely from the headquarters campus before regular trading began. TechCrunch reported that he signed the bell touchscreen with the words “To a more open and connected world”. Sheryl Sandberg and product executive Chris Cox were among those flanking him at the ceremony, according to the report.
The bell-ringing was a ceremonial moment, not the instant Facebook shares began trading. Contemporary coverage reported technical glitches and a delayed start to trading, making the distinction important when reconstructing the day: the ceremony happened first; the market opening followed later.

What were the IPO terms?
Facebook announced an offering of 421,233,615 shares at $38 per share. Those were the announced offering terms; the share count included stockholders selling shares, so it should not be read as a count of shares newly issued by Facebook alone.
Facebook, Inc.’s Class A shares began trading on Nasdaq under the symbol FB on May 18, 2012. The company’s 2012 annual report records that trading start, while contemporary reporting documents the delay caused by technical problems.

What can—and can’t—be said about the headquarters interior?
The contemporary accounts support a picture of a busy campus morning: employees gathered, the coffee shop opened early, a hackathon had run overnight, and the company staged a public-facing bell ceremony amid media coverage. They do not provide a sufficiently detailed interior account to describe particular offices, rooms, décor, sounds, or employees’ private reactions without speculation.
For a reader asking what it looked like “inside,” the most accurate answer is therefore about the event at headquarters rather than a room-by-room tour. The evidence places the ceremony and gathering at the Menlo Park campus, but does not pin them to a specific interior space.
