Expedia Group sold Egencia, its corporate travel business, to American Express Global Business Travel (Amex GBT). The sale closed on November 1, 2021, so the original headline’s future tense is outdated.
When did Expedia sell Egencia?
Amex GBT announced a binding offer to acquire Egencia on May 4, 2021. Expedia Group later accepted the offer on August 4, according to its SEC-filed 2021 Form 10-K. The transaction closed on November 1, 2021; Expedia announced the completed acquisition the next day.

What did Expedia retain in the transaction?
Expedia’s 2021 Form 10-K says it received a minority ownership position in the combined business and entered a 10-year lodging supply agreement with GBT. Amex GBT’s closing announcement also described Expedia as a shareholder and confirmed a long-term accommodations supply agreement.

The cited announcements do not establish whether that supply agreement is still active or whether its terms have changed. They also do not state a standalone sale price or cash consideration for Egencia, so the exact transaction economics cannot be determined from these materials.
Why did Amex GBT acquire Egencia?
The companies presented the deal as a way to combine Egencia’s digital travel platform with GBT’s corporate travel capabilities, technology and content. That was the companies’ stated strategic rationale, not evidence by itself of improved performance or particular customer outcomes. In announcing the offer, GBT’s then-CEO Paul Abbott said the strategy was to provide customers with “unparalleled choice” across managed travel segments.

How does the 2026 Amex GBT deal relate to Egencia?
Long Lake completed its acquisition of Amex GBT on September 29, 2026, in a separate transaction that Amex GBT valued at approximately $6.3 billion. Amex GBT said it became privately held and that its shares ceased trading ahead of NYSE delisting. The approximately $6.3 billion figure applies to Long Lake’s acquisition of Amex GBT—not to Expedia’s 2021 sale of Egencia.
Amex GBT’s 2026 announcement does not separately describe Egencia’s legal structure after the change in Amex GBT ownership. For the original Expedia transaction, the established outcome is that Egencia became part of Amex GBT in 2021.
