The European Commission’s 2026 European Innovation Council (EIC) Work Programme makes more than €1.4 billion available for research, commercialisation and scale-up. That is broadly the same headline funding range as in 2025—not a large across-the-board budget increase. The change is in the mix: the programme adds a small Advanced Innovation Challenges pilot and a €100 million defence-focused scale-up call, while directing substantial funding to companies seeking to commercialise or expand strategic technologies.
What the 2026 EIC funding programme changes
The EIC operates under Horizon Europe and supports breakthrough innovation from early research through commercialisation and company growth. The Commission lists a €10.1 billion EIC budget across the wider Horizon Europe programme; that multi-year figure is not the amount available in 2026. The 2026 work programme allocates more than €1.4 billion across several distinct funding routes. About the EIC and the 2026 EIC Work Programme describe the council’s remit and annual calls.
The headline figure needs context. The 2025 programme also advertised more than €1.4 billion, with a published total of about €1.419 billion. In 2026, Pathfinder remains at €262 million and Accelerator at €634 million; Transition rises from €98 million to €100 million. The new €6 million Advanced Innovation Challenges pilot and €100 million STEP Scale Up Defence call broaden the programme, but do not mean every existing scheme received a major increase. The Commission’s 2025 Work Programme provides the comparison.
How the 2026 funding is divided
The Commission’s scheme allocations describe a funding ladder, not a single pool of interchangeable grants. The six headline lines below total about €1.402 billion; the Commission describes the overall programme as worth more than €1.4 billion. Scheme limits are maximum or indicative support, not guaranteed awards.

- EXPOSED DOHC V8 ARCHITECTURE: This model presents a V8 layout with two angled cylinder banks, four exposed overhead camshafts, dual timing-chain drives, a central intake section, and outward-facing exhaust headers. The open arrangement makes the major mechanical structures easy to identify before and during operation.
- PRECISION METAL CONSTRUCTION: Built from precision-cast and machined components in anodized aluminum and stainless steel. Defined surfaces, exposed fasteners, timing assemblies, and front pulleys reflect key structures found in modern V8 engine architecture while giving the completed model a detailed industrial finish.
- 500+ COMPONENT ASSEMBLY: Build the model from more than 500 labeled components, including precision metal parts, screws, and assembly hardware. Custom foam trays help organize and protect the parts, while the included tool set and full-color manual guide the approximately five-hour assembly process.
- MOTORIZED FOUR-STROKE MOTION: An electric motor concealed inside the starter housing drives the crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons, and valvetrain through a four-stroke mechanical sequence. Viewing openings reveal the internal movement, while the exposed camshafts, timing chains, and belt-driven pulleys show how motion is transferred across the assembled engine.
- MECHANICAL DISPLAY FOR HOME OR OFFICE: Measuring approximately 7.80 × 6.69 × 7.09 inches when assembled, the DM118 combines visible mechanical motion with detailed metal construction. Intended for ages 14 and above, it is suited to model builders, automotive enthusiasts, engineering fans, and hobbyists for display in a home, office, study, studio, or workshop. A metal gift box is included.

Pathfinder: uncertain early research
Pathfinder is aimed at multidisciplinary research exploring very early scientific or technological concepts, where the eventual application may still be uncertain. It is not the natural fit for a mature product already approaching market. The 2026 allocation is €262 million, with grants up to €4 million. See the Pathfinder programme page.
Transition: a research result with commercial potential
Transition is for teams with an existing research result that needs validation, prototyping, market exploration or a credible path toward commercial exploitation. A strong scientific result alone is not enough: applicants need to explain how it could become an innovation opportunity. Its 2026 allocation is €100 million, with grants up to €2.5 million.

- Wonderfully Detailed Model: Our 5-Cylinder Radial engine model kits feature genuine precision-cast and machined parts in anodized aluminum and stainless steel. Each piece is accurate, detailed and directly correlates to assemblies found in modern, high-performance automobile engines. This is a superb introduction into engineering and mechanics.
- Complete Accessories: The kit contains over 230 parts. Each finely-crafted part is labeled, and packaged in custom foam carriers to ensure they are organized, complete, and undamaged. A clear, full-color instruction manual is included. While the engine is complex, step-by-step instructions – along with some patience – ensure excellent results.
- Simulation Model: A real electric motor inside the starter motor housing drives the 5-Cylinder Radial engine. The crankshaft, rods and pistons can be observed through special viewing windows. You can observe the operation of the 5-Cylinder Radial engine during the whole process. It is not only a beautiful decoration, but also a simulation dynamic model that can simulate the operation of a real 5-Cylinder Radial engine. Even when not in motion, it is an impressive machine to see.
- Excellent Learning Activity: This kit is not recommended for unsupervised children under the age of 14, due to its small parts. However, it provides a great opportunity for adults to spend time with children. The child will learn to understand and follow illustrated instructions, manipulate parts and basic tools, and to know the accomplishment of a job well-done. It fosters an appreciation for the ingenuity in today’s technology as well as the need for it in coming generations.
Advanced Innovation Challenges: a small, challenge-led pilot
The €6 million pilot targets high-risk, high-reward projects in areas where Europe has research capability but insufficient commercial uptake. The Commission says the approach is inspired by advanced-research agencies such as the US ARPA model. It is a limited pilot—not a funding stream comparable in scale with Pathfinder or Accelerator—and the programme identifies €300,000 lump-sum support.

Accelerator targets startups and SMEs with a developed innovation and a path to commercialisation or scale. Its 2026 allocation is €634 million. Support can combine a grant below €2.5 million with an equity or quasi-equity investment generally ranging from €0.5 million to €10 million; applicants should not assume every award includes both components. The scheme also offers Business Acceleration Services, including access to coaching, mentors, corporates, investors and ecosystem partners, but that access does not guarantee a customer or investment. Details are on the EIC Accelerator page.
The Commission says the 2026 process reduces full proposals from up to 50 pages to 20 pages and increases evaluation frequency from every six months to every two months. Those are stated process changes; applicants should follow the current call documents for the applicable format and timetable.

- 300+ PART ASSEMBLY PROJECT: Build the model from more than 300 components using the included tools and English instructions. The manufacturer estimates approximately two hours of assembly time. The process introduces the arrangement and transmission relationships within a dual-spool turbofan structure.
- DIMENSIONS AND DISPLAY USE: The completed DM121 measures approximately 12.28 × 6.57 × 7.40 inches and weighs about 4.76 pounds. It can be displayed in a home, office, studio, workshop, classroom, or aviation-themed collection.
STEP Scale Up: a large equity round with private backing
STEP Scale Up is designed for companies preparing a large financing round, not for applicants seeking a conventional early-stage grant. The 2026 scheme has a €300 million allocation and offers equity investments of €10 million to €30 million. It targets rounds of approximately €50 million to €150 million or more, in digital and deep tech, clean technologies and biotechnology.
A central readiness test is investor backing: applicants generally need a qualified investor pre-commitment representing at least 20% of the target round. The scheme’s materials also describe private pre-commitment of three to five times the EIC investment, depending on the structure. STEP is therefore intended to catalyse private capital, not replace a lead investor or eliminate financing risk. It is equity-only, so an investment is not a grant or unconditional cash award; it involves investment due diligence and ownership considerations. See the STEP Scale Up page.

How dual-use and defence funding differ
An amendment published on 17 June 2026 opened the Accelerator and STEP Scale Up to eligible dual-use innovation: technologies with credible civilian and defence applications. The change does not apply to Pathfinder or Transition. Applicants should check the amended call rules rather than assume that defence relevance makes a project eligible for every EIC instrument. The Accelerator FAQ and STEP Scale Up FAQ explain the call-specific conditions.

Companies focused purely on defence are directed to STEP Scale Up Defence, a separate €100 million call offering direct equity of up to €30 million. The Commission describes it as the first time an EU funding programme will directly invest equity in defence companies; that is the Commission’s characterization of the measure. This is a distinct strategic route, not an ordinary research grant.

Eligibility varies by instrument and call. The programme includes routes for research teams and consortia as well as startups, SMEs, university spin-offs and small mid-caps. STEP’s general eligibility information includes small mid-caps with fewer than 500 employees and focuses on entities established in EU Member States or eligible Associated Countries. UK participation is not safely summarized with a blanket yes or no: general programme wording and transitional arrangements can differ by scheme and call version. Check the live call conditions and the STEP FAQ before relying on eligibility.
- Exploratory science or an early technical concept: assess Pathfinder.
- An existing research result that needs validation and a commercialisation route: assess Transition.
- A developed innovation, company and route to market: assess Accelerator.
- A strategic-technology company preparing a €50 million–€150 million or larger round with investor backing: assess STEP Scale Up.
- A purely defence-focused scale-up: assess STEP Scale Up Defence.
- A credible civilian-and-defence application: check the amended Accelerator or STEP Scale Up rules for dual-use eligibility.
Being formally eligible does not make an application competitive. Companies should be ready to substantiate technical progress, market opportunity, finances and intellectual property. STEP applicants may need a business plan, pitch deck, financing plan, investor pre-commitment, freedom-to-operate analysis and key-personnel CVs. Grants are tied to eligible project activities and reporting requirements; equity entails a different diligence and ownership trade-off.

Deadlines and how applications are submitted
Applications use the EU Funding & Tenders Portal. The EIC’s published 2026 calendar listed these Accelerator batch dates: 7 January, 4 March, 6 May, 8 July, 2 September and 4 November. As of 18 August 2026, the next listed Accelerator deadline is 2 September 2026. STEP Scale Up dates listed for 2026 are 11 February, 6 May, 9 September and 25 November.
Deadlines can change, so confirm the live call page and portal entry before preparing a submission. The EIC’s funding opportunities calendar is the place to check the current schedule. Beneficiaries can also consult the official Business Acceleration Services for programme support; it is not a guarantee of funding, investors or customers.
What the €1.4 billion headline does—and does not—mean
The annual envelope is spread across different instruments, stages and applicant types; it is not a single grant available to every deep-tech project. The largest 2026 allocations go to Accelerator and STEP Scale Up, which address commercialisation and company financing as well as technology development. The EIC’s policy objective is to help promising European technologies move from research into industrial growth and to leverage private capital, but announced funding does not establish how much any applicant will receive or whether the programme will close Europe’s scale-up financing gap. Selection is competitive, and neither technical promise nor eligibility removes market and execution risk.
