For a voluntary customer-account deletion, Amazon requires you to verify your request within five days, but its published instructions do not promise how long final processing takes. Seller-account closure is different: sellers may need to wait 90 days after their last sale before closing, while appeals of seller deactivation are case-dependent.
First identify which kind of closure you mean
“Amazon account closure” can describe several different events, and the next step depends on which one applies:
- Voluntary customer-account deletion: You ask Amazon to close your account and delete personal information.
- Temporary lock or security restriction: You cannot sign in, but the account may not be permanently closed.
- Amazon-initiated closure: Amazon has restricted or closed a customer account, potentially over a policy, payment, security, identity, or account-integrity concern.
- Seller-account deactivation: Your selling privileges have been suspended or removed. This is separate from deleting a customer account.
- Program-specific closure: Associates, Brand Registry, Advertising, Amazon Pay, and other services may have separate processes.
Before estimating how long anything will take, establish who initiated the action, what account or service is affected, whether you can still sign in, and whether you mean deletion, restored access, an appeal decision, or a payout.
How long does voluntary customer-account deletion take?
Amazon’s UK account-closure instructions require you to sign in, review the products and services connected to your account, select a reason, confirm permanent closure, and respond to an email or text confirmation within five days. That five-day period is the deadline to verify the request—not a promise that deletion will be complete within five days. - Review the products and services Amazon shows as linked to the account, then select a reason.
- Confirm that you want to permanently close the account and delete the associated information, then select Close my Account.
- Watch for Amazon’s confirmation by email or text and respond within five days to verify the request.
The cited instructions are from Amazon UK. Exact wording and the services shown may differ by region, so use the closure flow for your marketplace and review its displayed list before confirming. If you cannot sign in, Amazon directs users to its separate login-help process; first determine whether you have a password or one-time-passcode problem, a security lock, or a notice saying the account is closed.
What to save and resolve before closing
Amazon warns that closure can remove access to account records and services. Download anything you may need later, and handle open transactions before submitting the request. Its account-closure consequences page specifically recommends saving content and invoices and explains that some Amazon Pay purchases not yet billed may still be charged based on the merchant’s shipment timing.

- Orders and records: Save invoices and order information; check for outstanding orders, returns, refunds, warranties, and product-support needs.
- Photos and uploads: Download Amazon Photos and other content you uploaded.
- Digital services and subscriptions: Review Prime, Kindle, Audible, and other services tied to the credentials, and make a plan for subscriptions you want to continue.
- Payments: Check gift-card balances, Amazon Pay transactions, and any subscription using Amazon Pay. Do not assume a balance can be recovered or transferred; check the terms for your region and service.
- Business and linked services: Review Seller, Brand Registry, and Advertising access before closing a login those accounts may use.
What closure changes—and whether it affects other Amazon services
Amazon’s UK instructions say closure is permanent and the account cannot be restored. They also warn that it can affect services across Amazon sites using the same credentials, with examples including Amazon.com, Amazon.fr, and Amazon.com.mx, as well as associated business accounts. The exact products and regional experience can vary; rely on the services listed in your own closure flow. Amazon says that if you have multiple accounts, each must be handled separately. After closure, you may lose access to profile information, reviews and discussion posts, order history, invoices, returns and refund tools, Amazon Pay history, and other connected services.
If your goal is simply to stop using Amazon, permanent deletion may be unnecessary. Amazon Pay says keeping an Amazon account open costs nothing and it can remain dormant (Amazon Pay: Closing your Amazon account). You can instead cancel subscriptions, remove saved payment methods and addresses where appropriate, turn off marketing communications, and keep the account records you still need.

If Amazon closed, restricted, or locked your customer account
A notice that an account is locked, under review, deactivated, or closed is not the same as a voluntary deletion request. If Amazon has taken action, a normal deletion request is not a substitute for resolving it.
- Find the original closure or restriction email, or the account-status message shown when you try to sign in.
- Check whether it includes a specific appeal or account-recovery route and follow that route.
- Respond to the issue Amazon actually states. Provide factual, relevant details and any requested identity, payment, order, or ownership evidence.
- Keep copies of your submission and confirmation. Avoid sending multiple appeals that contradict one another; inconsistent details can lead to further verification.
Some notices may give limited detail. Do not guess at a reason; address the stated issue and provide the requested documentation. General customer-service agents may not be able to reverse a decision made by a specialist team, so use the appeal channel in the notice when one is provided. Do not create a replacement account to bypass a restriction.

Voluntary Amazon seller-account closure
A seller’s closure preparation is not a customer-account deletion timeline. Amazon seller guidance describes a 90-day wait after the last sale to account for potential A-to-z Guarantee claims. This is a pre-closure safeguard, not a guarantee that Amazon will process a closure in 90 days. The same guidance advises sellers to complete or resolve the following before closing:
- Fulfill outstanding orders.
- Allow 90 days after the last sale for the A-to-z Guarantee claims period.
- Reach a zero account balance and resolve buyer transactions and refunds.
- Keep bank details current for any final payment.
- Resolve suspension-related issues and restore the account before trying to close it.
These steps are described in Amazon Seller Central’s guidance on closing a store. A pending investigation or a balance not yet available for disbursement can affect funds; the Selling on Amazon User Agreement, section 5.2, describes circumstances in which funds may be held. There is no universal public timeframe for release after closure.

Seller deactivation appeals: what timing guidance means
To appeal a seller deactivation, Amazon forum guidance gives this Seller Central path: Performance → Account Health → Reactivate your account. Complete the requested explanation, acknowledgment, quiz, or documentation and submit it. Monitor email; if Amazon requests more information, use View Appeal in Account Health to provide it. Use these figures as context rather than promises for an individual case. Keep the appeal focused, follow the request in Account Health, and do not open another seller account to get around a deactivation.
Amazon Associates and other program-specific closures
Amazon Associates has a separate appeal window: a closed account may be appealed through the Contact Us form within five business days of closure. Choose Closed Account Appeal and provide detailed evidence if disputing the violation. This is an Associates-specific rule, not the customer-account verification deadline. See Amazon Associates Central. For Brand Registry, Advertising, Amazon Pay, or other programs, follow the notice and the relevant program’s process rather than assuming customer-account timing applies.

What to do when there is no confirmation or the timeline has stalled
- You submitted a customer deletion request but received no confirmation: Check the email address and phone number on the account, including spam or filtered messages. If you can sign in, revisit Amazon’s closure instructions; if you cannot, use login help or customer service to resolve access first.
- You can still sign in after requesting closure: Do not treat sign-in alone as proof that deletion failed. Check whether you responded to the confirmation within five days and use Amazon’s account-closure channel for a status question.
- You are locked out: Treat it as an account-recovery or security issue unless Amazon’s notice explicitly says the account is permanently closed.
- A refund, return, order, or Amazon Pay purchase is pending: Preserve the transaction details and resolve what you can before closure; some unbilled Amazon Pay purchases may still be charged when a merchant ships.
- A seller balance or investigation is unresolved: Check Account Health, transaction status, and the applicable disbursement terms. Do not assume closing the account releases funds immediately.
- An appeal has not received a decision: Check the designated account-status channel and email for requests. The cited seller response estimates are not guaranteed deadlines for every case.
