Emile Edouard Moreau was a French-born businessman who helped build AH Wheeler into a railway bookselling and publishing name in India. The familiar account begins with books sold to passengers at Allahabad station, but the precise founding year is disputed, and parts of the origin story survive as hearsay rather than verified first-hand documentation.

Who was Emile Edouard Moreau?

Moreau was born in Oise, France, on 11 July 1856, to Auguste Moreau and Mary, an Englishwoman. The Society of Old Framlinghamians records him as a Pembroke Scholar at Framlingham in 1871–72 and says he travelled to India in 1873. Its profile describes him joining Bird & Co, a family firm founded by his uncles Sam and Paul Bird, and working in Calcutta, Benares and Ghazeepore. The school society’s profile of Moreau supplies these biographical details.

Anu Kumar’s 2015 account in Scroll likewise identifies Moreau’s mother as Mary Bird and places him in India as a young Bird & Company employee. The accounts broadly agree on his family and school background, but their descriptions of ages and locations do not support a more exact combined chronology.

How did Moreau help start AH Wheeler?

The best-known origin story puts Moreau at Allahabad railway station, where he saw an opportunity to sell reading material to passengers. In Scroll’s retelling, he began with books displayed in a wooden almirah—a cabinet—and proposed selling books from the home library of his friend, London bookseller Arthur Henry Wheeler. The article introduces this as “as the story goes,” so it is best understood as a remembered account, not a confirmed first-hand record.

The company took its name from Arthur Henry Wheeler. Moreau’s role in the venture is clear in the historical narrative, but the date usually given for its beginnings is not settled:

Source Date or account What it supports
Scroll 1877, while acknowledging that 1874 is also given A date for the first Allahabad stall, not a universally agreed founding date.
Society of Old Framlinghamians Its profile repeats the conflicting 1874/1877 dates in one passage and says elsewhere that Moreau and T. K. Bannerjee started the chain in 1886 An institutional biography that preserves, rather than resolves, the discrepancy.

Accordingly, the careful conclusion is that Moreau was associated with AH Wheeler’s creation in Allahabad in the 1870s, while published accounts disagree about the exact year. Scroll also reports that a London Gazette notice named Moreau, Arthur Henry Wheeler, Arthur Lisle Wheeler, W. M. Rudge and Tigran Ratheus David as partners, with offices in Allahabad and London. That partner list is reported by Scroll; the notice itself is not independently established here.

What was AH Wheeler’s relationship with Rudyard Kipling?

AH Wheeler was more than a bookseller: it published Kipling’s Indian Railway Library stories. The Framlingham profile describes Moreau as Kipling’s first publisher in 1889 and identifies Soldiers Three as the first of seven titles issued through Wheeler’s Indian Library at one rupee per volume. The titles listed there are:

  • Soldiers Three
  • The Story of the Gadsbys
  • In Black and White
  • Under the Deodars
  • The Phantom Rickshaw and Other Eerie Tales
  • Wee Willie Winkie and Other Stories
  • The City of the Dreadful Night

Title forms can vary by edition. A separate documentary anchor appears in the University of Sussex Library catalogue entry for Kipling papers, which lists a Moreau bill of sale and receipt dated 7 March 1889, as well as later agreements concerning the Indian Railway Library, including a copyright purchase and printed stock. The catalogue confirms the existence of relevant business records; it does not, on its own, establish every detail of how the publishing arrangement began.

Scroll and the Framlingham profile report Kipling describing Moreau as someone who “came of an imaginative race, used to taking chances.” This is a reported recollection, rather than a quotation verified here against Kipling’s original text.

What did Moreau do beyond bookselling?

Moreau’s business interests extended beyond the railway book trade. The Framlingham profile records directorships connected to India, Java, Malaya and Trinidad. Scroll adds interests in rubber and Trinidad oil and reports that Moreau wrote about rubber tapping while connected with a Java rubber company. These accounts portray an internationally connected businessman, though they do not provide a complete corporate history.

Both Scroll and the Framlingham profile associate Moreau with British First World War propaganda work. The school profile says he joined the Ministry of Munitions at the start of the war and later returned to India to organize propaganda distribution. It records that he received a CBE in 1919. The available accounts do not establish specific operations or a precise measure of his individual contribution.

How was Moreau connected to Framlingham later in life?

Moreau maintained a substantial relationship with his former school. The Old Framlinghamians profile records gifts including a gymnastics cup in 1909, scientific apparatus in 1920 and library additions in 1922. It also describes a £1,000 gift to the Wallace Scholarship, alongside further gifts and bequests to the college and its society. The profile calls him “probably the most significant individual benefactor to the School and the Society”—the institution’s own assessment.

The same profile records Moreau’s death on 20 February 1937, aged 80.

What happened to AH Wheeler’s railway stalls?

A report published by Re-mumbai on 10 April 2026 said 55 AH Wheeler stalls on Mumbai’s Western Railway network were being closed, with one Mumbai Central site to be retained for a different use. This is a dated, regional report; it does not establish the current status of every AH Wheeler outlet across India.
