Elon Musk reposted an altered Kamala Harris campaign video on X on July 26, 2024. The edit used footage from a real Harris campaign ad but replaced its audio with a fabricated voiceover. Its creator described it as parody; it was not an authentic campaign ad or a real recording of Harris making the statements.
What was the original Harris campaign ad?
The genuine campaign video was titled “We Choose Freedom.” The altered clip retained campaign imagery from that ad, but changed the audio. Keeping the two versions separate matters: the visuals came from campaign material, while the words heard in the circulating edit were fabricated. Lead Stories’ fact-check and contemporaneous coverage describe the distinction.
What did the doctored video change?
The edit substituted a voiceover that mimicked Harris and attributed statements to her that she had not made. One reported line was “I was selected because I am the ultimate diversity hire.” That was part of the fabricated audio, not an authentic Harris quote. The account known as Mr Reagan created the video and characterized it as parody, according to the fact-check and The Guardian’s contemporaneous report.
What did Musk post, and how was it labeled?
Musk reposted the edited video on X on July 26, 2024. Contemporary reports said his repost did not explicitly identify the video as manipulated or parody. That is distinct from the creator’s characterization: describing the edit as parody does not make its fabricated voiceover genuine, and the creator’s description does not amount to a label on Musk’s repost. Fortune and Axios covered the repost and debate around it.

How did the Harris campaign respond?
Mia Ehrenberg, a Harris campaign spokesperson, criticized the post. Fortune reported her statement: “We believe the American people want the real freedom, opportunity and security Vice President Harris is offering; not the fake, manipulated lies of Elon Musk and Donald Trump.”

The episode drew attention to political deepfakes, satire, platform labeling and how difficult it can be to recognize manipulated or synthetic audio. Those were concerns and arguments reported at the time, not findings that Musk broke a law or that X definitively violated a platform rule. This account concerns the July 2024 incident; it does not describe X’s current policies or establish whether the post remains available.
