ECAD pays music rightsholders from royalties it has collected, and the timing depends on the segment in which the music was used. A performance alone does not guarantee payment: the use must be captured or reported, the user must pay, and the rightsholder must be affiliated with one of Brazil’s seven collective management associations with repertoire details kept current.
How ECAD royalty payments work
ECAD—the Escritório Central de Arrecadação e Distribuição—is Brazil’s private, nonprofit organization for collecting and distributing royalties when music is performed publicly. The Ministry of Culture describes its charges as set through the collective management system under copyright rules, not as a government tax: Ministry of Culture copyright FAQ.

The basic flow is: ECAD collects from the music user, then distributes eligible amounts through the collective management system. ECAD puts the limit plainly: “we can only distribute what is actually collected.” See its royalty-payment FAQ.
When will you receive royalties?
There is no single payment date for all music. ECAD says distributions may be monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, or annual, depending on the music-use segment. Check the current distribution calendar for the segment in which your work was used.

Use type also matters. ECAD distinguishes live and mechanical uses, which can affect which rightsholders receive a distribution. The relevant association can help identify the applicable segment and explain how it presents member statements.
What must happen before ECAD can pay you?
- The music user pays. If the venue, channel, or other responsible user has not paid ECAD, there may be no collected amount to distribute.
- The use is captured or reported. A performance that is not identified in ECAD’s monitoring or reporting does not automatically generate a payment.
- You are represented by an affiliated association. ECAD says a rightsholder must be affiliated with one of the seven associations in the collective management system.
- Your repertoire information is current and identifiable. Incorrect or missing work or recording information can leave a credit pending identification.
ECAD sends associations statements detailing captured songs, segments, and generated earnings. Each association decides how its members can access that information. Start by asking your association whether any amounts are awaiting distribution and whether your repertoire registrations need correction.

Why a royalty may be delayed or missing
The user has not paid
ECAD distributes only amounts actually collected. A reported performance does not itself establish that the responsible user has paid.
The use has not been captured or reported
Check with your association whether the use appears in the relevant statement and whether additional information is needed to identify it.

The work or recording is awaiting identification
If ECAD cannot match a captured work or recording to a properly registered entry in its database, the amount can remain pending until identification allows the credit to be released. Review your repertoire details with your association.
You are checking the wrong distribution period
Look up the calendar for the use segment rather than assuming that every performance is paid monthly. The association can help you interpret the segment shown in your statement.

How much of collected royalties goes to rightsholders?
ECAD’s FAQ states that the allocation is 85% to authors, performers, and other rightsholders; 6% to collective management societies for operating expenses; and 9% to ECAD for administration. The FAQ does not state a publication year for these percentages. ECAD also published the same allocation in a May 2, 2023 article.

ECAD’s payment guidance article, published December 26, 2022, says it bills continuous music use monthly and may charge once for a specific use such as a show. It says billing can take account of the type and degree of music use, business activity, location, socioeconomic region, and the importance of music to the business. Because procedures can change, confirm the amount and current payment instructions through ECAD’s official user channel.

Verify a boleto before paying
The same December 2022 article says the boleto beneficiary should appear as “Escritório Central de Arrecadação e Distribuição – Ecad” and identifies Bradesco as issuer. These are useful checks, not a substitute for confirming a particular bill: use ECAD’s current payment guidance or contact the local office if anything looks different.
That article says a duplicate can be requested at no charge through the Canal do Usuário or ECAD’s virtual assistant. Verify local units and authorized representatives by municipality through ECAD before responding to an unexpected payment request. It states that boleto was ECAD’s only payment method at the time of publication; consult current official instructions for accepted methods.
Does ECAD charge for music used online?
ECAD’s digital-services guidance says public performance through a website, app, streaming platform, or other online service may require licensing whether or not the service earns revenue. It identifies the party transmitting or making music available as the responsible payer, and says the applicable fee can depend on music’s role, the service’s purpose, and the form of use, such as background music, podcasting, or webcasting. For commercial websites, its guidance describes calculations that may be tied to gross revenue and subject to a minimum UDA under applicable rules.
The same ECAD guidance says that, in the described social-media video context, the platform is generally responsible for licensing the public musical performance rather than the individual posting the video. Platform arrangements and regulations may change, so consult the current rules for a specific service or use.
